Estimating Resource Requirements To Support Multi-Echelon F-15e Deployments, David R. Maxwell Mar 2005

Estimating Resource Requirements To Support Multi-Echelon F-15e Deployments, David R. Maxwell

Theses and Dissertations

Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has become focused on developing the capability to rapidly respond to emerging crises. Strategic and operation planning play key roles in order to effectively implement this concept. During the planning process, separate courses of action (COAs) are developed. These COAs are evaluated based upon their operational effect, resource availability, nuclear and transportation feasibility. Currently, transportation feasibility assessments are based on the resources contained within a full Unit Type Code (UTC). Some COAs are eliminated based on these factors. However, most deployments occur at reduced levels. Situational factors, such as the …

An Analysis Of Biometric Technology As An Enabler To Information Assurance, Darren A. Deschaine Mar 2005

An Analysis Of Biometric Technology As An Enabler To Information Assurance, Darren A. Deschaine

Theses and Dissertations

The use of and dependence on, Information technology (IT) has grown tremendously in the last two decades. Still, some believe the United States is only in the infancy of this growth. This explosive growth has opened the door to capabilities that were only dreamed of in the past. As easy as it is to see how advantageous this technology is, it also is clear that with its advantages come distinct responsibilities and new problems that must be addressed. For instance, the minute one begins using information processing systems, the world of information assurance (IA) becomes far more complex. As a …

Conducting Qualitative Research On Desertification In Western Lesvos, Greece, Theodoros Iosifides, Theodoros Politidis

The Qualitative Report

The main aim of this article is to present some critical methodological strategies employed in a qualitative research study on local socioeconomic development and desertification in western Lesvos, Greece. Through in-depth qualitative interviews with local producers in western Lesvos, Greece, an effort was made to identify and analyze the links between the local socioeconomic trajectory and environmental marginality. The article concerns the justification of the choice of qualitative investigation on the matter, the main methodological strategies employed in the field, and the basic data analysis processes. In particular, we discuss the gradual development of a coding framework and a conceptual …

Aging And Older Men: Thoughts, Reflections And Issues: Introduction, Robert Blundo, Deborah E. Bowen Mar 2005

Aging And Older Men: Thoughts, Reflections And Issues: Introduction, Robert Blundo, Deborah E. Bowen

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Efforts across many fields engaged in addressing the population of aging in this country have tended to create a nearly homogenous cohort that often does not recognize the heterogeneity of aging across gender, race, ethnicity, geography, socioeconomic status, cultural and sexual orientation. The diversity within aging members of our society brings about many variations and unique issues that need to be recognized and explored by policy makers and practitioners. Among these is aging related to gender, which has tended to pay much less attention to men than women. Content analysis of journals and texts on aging has revealed a significant …

Exilic Perspectives On "Alien Nations", Sophia A. Mcclennen Mar 2005

Exilic Perspectives On "Alien Nations", Sophia A. Mcclennen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Sophia A. McClennen's paper, "Exilic Perspectives on 'Alien Nations'," is an excerpt from her book, The Dialectics of Exile: Nation, Time, Language and Space in Hispanic Literatures (Purdue UP , 2004). In the paper, McClennen summarizes her theory that exile writing is inherently dialectical. Focusing on writers working in the latter part of the twentieth century who were exiled during a historical moment of increasing globalization, transnational economics, and the theoretical shifts of postmodernism, McClennen proposes that exile literature is best understood as a series of dialectic tensions about cultural identity. Through a comparative analysis of Juan Goytisolo (Spain), Ariel …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Hydrographic training entered a new era when students arrived at the University of New Hampshire in August of 2004 to form the first class of the Nippon Foundation GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans) training program. Born out of the need to replenish GEBCO’s aging human material, and of the desire to spread deep ocean mapping capabilities more widely throughout the world, the program attracted applications from 57 students in over thirty countries. The seven selected each had post graduate training and several years experience, but differed in that three were hydrographers, two geologists and two oceanographers. Classes planned …

Modeling And Simulation Of Commercial Satellite Imagery Processes, David A. Shultz Mar 2005

Modeling And Simulation Of Commercial Satellite Imagery Processes, David A. Shultz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop a general, statistical model of order-to-delivery times for commercial satellite imagery. The research looked at the current four satellite providers with 3-meter or better imagers in the context of a generalized model of commercial imaging satellite operations. Existing methods use orbit analysis tools to determine the imaging time of a specified target based on defined satellite position and times, but can only develop shortest and longest times to an imaging opportunity. To address the general question of the time it takes to deliver an image for non-specific targets, this research develops a …

Observed Effects Of Horizontal Surface Temperature Variations On The Atmosphere Over A Mid-West Watershed During Cases 97, Robert L. Grossman, D. Yates, M. A. Lemone, M.L. Wesely, Jie Song

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The association between 10-km scale horizontal variation of radiometric surface temperature (Ts) and aircraft-derived fluxes of sensible heat (H) and moisture (LE) is the focus of this work. We use aircraft, surface, and satellite data from a Cooperative Atmospheric-Surface Exchange Studies (CASES) field program, which took place in the southern part of the 60 100 km Walnut River (Kansas) watershed from 22 April to 22 May 1997, when winter wheat matured and prairie grass greened up. Aircraft Ts observed along repeated flight tracks above the surface layer showed a persistent pattern: maxima over ridges characterized by shallow soil and rocky …

Information Technology Implementation And Sustainment Model: Data Collection Instrument, Walter K. Yazzie Mar 2005

Information Technology Implementation And Sustainment Model: Data Collection Instrument, Walter K. Yazzie

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to develop a data collection instrument for an existing information technology implementation and sustainment model. In 2003, a unique system dynamics model was developed at the Air Force Institute of Technology to predict the behavior of information technology implementation and sustainment (Fonnesbeck, 2003). However, no empirical data was used during the model development. In order to collect the needed empirical data, this research develops a data collection instrument for the model. The instrument was sent to 60 Air Force community planners who are currently implementing a geographical information system (Air Force GeoBase) into their …

Exploratory Inquiry: Disparate Air Force Base Area Network Architectures, Charlie W. Boyd Jr. Mar 2005

Exploratory Inquiry: Disparate Air Force Base Area Network Architectures, Charlie W. Boyd Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Joint Vision 2020, the Department of Defense (DoD) blueprint for development and transformation, identifies information and technology as critical enablers for our nation's military and calls for the development of a joint force capable of integrated information sharing to provide decision superiority, the ability to make and implement better decisions before enemies can react (DoD, 2000). Networks have been identified as the single most important element for transforming our current military forces. Ironically, Air Force base-level communications networks have been identified as a weakness. This research follows the qualitative approach to increases the current understanding of base level communications networks …

An Investigation Of Geobase Mission Data Set Design, Implementation, And Usage Within Air Force Civil Engineer Electrical And Utilities Work Centers, Paul C. Loeber Mar 2005

An Investigation Of Geobase Mission Data Set Design, Implementation, And Usage Within Air Force Civil Engineer Electrical And Utilities Work Centers, Paul C. Loeber

Theses and Dissertations

In 2001, the Office of the Civil Engineer, Installation and Logistics, Headquarters, United States Air Force, (ILE) identified Civil Engineer Squadrons as the central point of contact for all base-level mapping requirements/activities. In order to update mapping methods and procedures, ILE has put into place a program called GeoBase, which uses private sector Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology as a foundation. In its current state, GeoBase uses the concept of a "Common Installation Picture (CIP)" to describe the goal of a consolidated "visual" that integrates the many layers of mapping information. The CIP visual is formed from a collection of …

Geolocation Of A Node On A Local Area Network, John R. Clarson Mar 2005

Geolocation Of A Node On A Local Area Network, John R. Clarson

Theses and Dissertations

Geolocation is the process of identifying a node using only its Internet Protocol (IP) address. Locating a node on a LAN poses particular challenges due to the small scale of the problem and the increased significance of queuing delay. This study builds upon existing research in the area of geolocation and develops a heuristic tailored to the difficulties inherent in LANs called the LAN Time to Location Heuristic (LTTLH). LTTLH uses several polling nodes to measure latencies to end nodes, known locations within the LAN. The Euclidean distance algorithm is used to compare the results with the latency of a …

Keeping Score: The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll Feb 2005

Keeping Score: The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll

ExpressO

Inspired by the passionate contemporary debates about music copyright, this Article investigates how, when, and why music first came within copyright's domain. Although music publishers and recording companies are among the most aggressive advocates for strong copyright protection today, when copyright law was first invented in eighteenth-century England, music publishers resisted its extension to music. This Article sheds light on a series of early legal disputes concerning printed music that yield important insights into original understandings of copyright law and music's role in society. By focusing attention on this understudied episode, this Article demonstrates that the concept of copyright was …
