During the months of March and April 2005, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a 100 percent intensive pedestrian survey of three tracts of land (totaling 210 acres) for Adams Environmental, Inc. The project area is located within the boundaries of the San Antonio International Airport and the tracts are owned by the City of San Antonio Department of Aviation. The tracts represent the planned locations for the expansion of two runways and land development adjacent to them. The goal of the archaeological survey was to identify and document all prehistoric …

On December 7, 2004, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) conducted a Phase I intensive pedestrian archaeological survey of a 10-acre portion of Tract 4 in the Las Blancas Subdivision located near Laredo in Webb County, Texas, for Habitat for Humanity of Laredo. The proposed development consists of the construction of low-income housing within this parcel.
Twenty shovel tests were excavated along 20-meter transects and in areas considered to have high or moderate probability of buried cultural materials. In addition, two backhoe trenches were excavated in alluvial deposits along the eastern margin of the project area overlooking Blancas Creek. The …

Breaking Ground: Planning And Building In Priority Growth Districts, Jeremy Stone, Joshua Rinesmith, Sue Huot, John R. Nolan
Yale School of the Environment Publications Series
The need to control sprawl, encourage Smart Growth, and create more livable neighborhoods that instill a sense of community through traditional neighborhood design, are topics in the forefront of national discussions about community planning and development. There is an innovative land use technique that can be used by communities to manage and define future growth in a way that creates more livable places, places that are environmentally, socially, and fiscally sound. Specifically, a community may designate mixed-use Priority Growth Districts, or PGDs, which direct development to selected locations and also specify a design that is attractive to the community’s current …

Burrows maintained by animals in aquatic sediments ventilate the sediment and can substantially alter the rates and pathways of biologically-mediated decomposition reactions. A well known and effective way of modeling the impact of such bioirrigation in sediment diagenetic models is to assume that solutes diffuse into an annulus of sediment surrounding the burrow; the reaction diffusion equations are represented in cylindrical polar co-ordinates. More commonly, bioirrigation of sediments is represented by one-dimensional "nonlocal" irrigation models. Their use is typically justified by the assertion that a nonlocal model is equivalent to a radially-integrated two-dimensional diffusion model in cylindrical-polar co-ordinates. In this …

The 19th Century Excavation Of Kent's Cavern, England, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg
The 19th Century Excavation Of Kent's Cavern, England, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg
WM Keck Science Faculty Papers
Between 1858 and 1880, William Pengelly developed revolutionary new techniques for the archeological and paleontological excavation of cave deposits. His work at Brixham Cave and Kent’s Cavern, England, yielded tens of thousands of specimens from the mid-Pleistocene to the Holocene, settled the intellectual debate over the co-existence of humans and extinct mammals, and accumulated an unparalleled resource for continued study. Although the Brixham Cave work was thoroughly summarized in print, Pengelly never published the plans of his much more thorough and extensive excavations at Kent’s Cavern. Here we present a reconstructed plan of the Pengelly excavations that we hope will …

Quantification Of Call Variations Between Sub-Regional Florida Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Populations, Kory C. Russel
Quantification Of Call Variations Between Sub-Regional Florida Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Populations, Kory C. Russel
Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses
The Florida Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) has seen significant and accelerating declines in its overall population numbers in the past 100 years. This is primarily the result of habitat loss and population fragmentation, which has isolated the extremely territorial Florida Scrub Jay into smaller sub-regional populations. In many ways this is a catalyst for social evolution and divergence of the species. An early indicator of divergent evolution can be witnessed in the development of distinct call dialects. By recording the female hiccup calls of the three largest distinct sub-regional populations (Atlantic Coast sub-region, Ocala sub-region and the Lake …

Developing An Educational Portfolio And Survey For The New Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center : A Capstone Project ..., Tera Farnsworth
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Environmental interpretation allows people to gain an understanding of their surroundings, know why the environment is important and to have a greater appreciation for the environment as a whole. By creating a visitors center in Santa Cruz the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary would like to create educational programs for the public and students to make people more environmentally aware. The overall goal for my project was to compile a database of informal science education centers in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas, compile a database of schools in Santa Cruz County and use this information to aid in the …
