The Passing Of Abc's Monday Night Football, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2005

The Passing Of Abc's Monday Night Football, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

At the end of its thirty-sixth season, ABC's Monday Night Football will pass into history, sort of. It certainly has been an institution of historical significance for broadcasting and for American popular culture as well as sport. It will not exactly disappear but will migrate to Sunday night, while ESPN's Sunday night football will move over to fill the void on Monday night.

BBER Publications

This is the preliminary analysis of data relating to the impacts of the $8.50 minimum wage mandated by the Living Wage Ordinance on Santa Fe workers, businesses and the Santa Fe economy. The final report will include a more complete analysis of data collected under this first phase of the research project and a statistical analysis of microdata available after the beginning of 2006.

High-Temperature Calcium Vapor Cell For Spectroscopy On The 4s2 1s0-4s4p 3p1 Intercombination Line, Christopher J. Erickson, Brian Neyenhuis, Dallin S. Durfee Dec 2005

High-Temperature Calcium Vapor Cell For Spectroscopy On The 4s2 1s0-4s4p 3p1 Intercombination Line, Christopher J. Erickson, Brian Neyenhuis, Dallin S. Durfee

Faculty Publications

We have demonstrated a high-temperature vapor cell for absorption spectroscopy on the Ca intercombination line. The cell uses a dual-chamber design to achieve the high temperatures necessary for an optically dense vapor while avoiding the necessity of high-temperature vacuum valves and glass-to-metal seals. We have observed over 50% absorption in a single pass through the cell. Although pressure broadening in the cell prevented us from performing saturated-absorption spectroscopy, the broadening resulted in higher signal-to-noise ratios by allowing us to probe the atoms with intensities much greater than the 0.2µW/cm2 saturation intensity of the unbroadened transition. The techniques presented in this …

Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll Dec 2005

Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis utilized a linear analytical approach to explore the damage tolerance or residual strength as a function of increasing damage in traditional single and hybrid-grid IsoTruss® structures. Residual strength was studied for structures subjected to axial compression, torsion and flexural bending, independently. Carbon/epoxy material properties were applied in all load cases, and fiberglass/epoxy material properties were also applied in the flexural bending case. Prior to imposing damage conditions, the IsoTruss® structures were parametrically optimized to achieve the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Typical compression strut, driveshaft, and utility pole specifications governed the design strength dimensions and boundary conditions. Damage growth was …

State-Level High School Completion Rates: Concepts, Measures, And Trends, John Robert Warren Dec 2005

State-Level High School Completion Rates: Concepts, Measures, And Trends, John Robert Warren

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Since the mid 1970s the national rate at which incoming 9th graders have completed high school has fallen slowly but steadily; this is also true in 41 states. In 2002, about three in every four students who might have completed high school actually did so; in some states this figure is substantially lower. In this paper I review state-level measures of high school completion rates and describe and validate a new measure that reports these rates for 1975 through 2002. ...

Development Of Handbook Addressing Self-Efficacy And Intrinsic Motivation In The Corporate Training Setting, Geraldine L. Marquis Dec 2005

Development Of Handbook Addressing Self-Efficacy And Intrinsic Motivation In The Corporate Training Setting, Geraldine L. Marquis

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This research project focuses on strategies for increasing intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy beliefs of participants in the one to two day corporate training session. It consists of three primary components: (1) identifying strategies that can be utilized to increase intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy beliefs through a review of literature and interviews with corporate trainers, (2) testing of strategies within training sessions to determine if utilizing the strategies results in an increase of participants' intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy beliefs, and (3) developing a handbook outlining these strategies that can be utilized by corporate trainers. Although additional research is needed in this …

Impact Of Phytoplankton On The Biogeochemical Cycling Of Iron In Subantarctic Waters Southeast Of New Zealand During Fecycle, Robert Michael Mckay, S. W. Wilhelm, J. Hall, D. A. Hutchins, M. M. D. Al-R Shaidat, C. E. Mioni, S. Pickmere, D. Porta, P. W. Boyd Dec 2005

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

During austral summer 2003, we tracked a patch of surface water infused with the tracer sulfur hexafluoride, but without addition of Fe, through subantarctic waters over 10 days in order to characterize and quantify algal Fe pools and fluxes to construct a detailed biogeochemical budget. Nutrient profiles characterized this patch as a high-nitrate, low-silicic acid, low-chlorophyll (HNLSiLC) water mass deficient in dissolved Fe. The low Fe condition was confirmed by several approaches: shipboard iron enrichment experiments and physiological indices of Fe deficiency (F(v)/F(m) < 0.25, Ferredoxin Index < 0.2). During FeCycle, picophytoplankton (0.2-2 mu m) and nanophytoplankton (2-20 mu m) each contributed >40% of total chlorophyll. Whereas the picophytoplankton accounted for similar to 50% of total primary production, they …

Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall Dec 2005

Learning Successful Strategies In Repeated General-Sum Games, Jacob W. Crandall

Theses and Dissertations

Many environments in which an agent can use reinforcement learning techniques to learn profitable strategies are affected by other learning agents. These situations can be modeled as general-sum games. When playing repeated general-sum games with other learning agents, the goal of a self-interested learning agent is to maximize its own payoffs over time. Traditional reinforcement learning algorithms learn myopic strategies in these games. As a result, they learn strategies that produce undesirable results in many games. In this dissertation, we develop and analyze algorithms that learn non-myopic strategies when playing many important infinitely repeated general-sum games. We show that, in …

Adaptive Weighing Of Context Models For Lossless Data Compression, Matthew V. Mahoney Dec 2005

Adaptive Weighing Of Context Models For Lossless Data Compression, Matthew V. Mahoney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Until recently the state of the art in lossless data compression was prediction by partial match (PPM). A PPM model estimates the next-symbol probability distribution by combining statistics from the longest matching contiguous contexts in which each symbol value is found. We introduce a context mixing model which improves on PPM by allowing contexts which are arbitrary functions of the history. Each model independently estimates a probability and confidence that the next bit of data will be 0 or 1. Predictions are combined by weighted averaging. After a bit is arithmetic coded, the weights are adjusted along the cost gradient …
