Getting Around The Gatt: Passing Gatt-Legal Legislation To Protect Marine Living Resources, Brad L. Milkwick Sep 2005

Getting Around The Gatt: Passing Gatt-Legal Legislation To Protect Marine Living Resources, Brad L. Milkwick

ExpressO

The WTO has been called, among other things, anti-environment. This is due in large part to the position that GATT dispute settlement panels have taken on environment-friendly legislation—such legislation is often struck down as being unduly restrictive of trade and therefore unenforceable under the GATT/WTO agreement. For example, in three seminal disputes that were brought before the GATT (often referred to as the Tuna/Dolphin I, Tuna/Dolphin II, and Shrimp/Turtle disputes), GATT dispute settlement bodies “recommended” against the United States and in favor of the countries which were allegedly engaging in environmentally-destructive practices. This article looks at those recommendations in some …

The Anchor, Volume 119.02: September 14, 2005, Hope College

The Anchor: 2005

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

On-Disk Sequence Cache (Odsc): Using Excess Disk Capacity To Increase Performance, Christopher Ryan Slade Sep 2005

On-Disk Sequence Cache (Odsc): Using Excess Disk Capacity To Increase Performance, Christopher Ryan Slade

Theses and Dissertations

We present an on-disk sequence cache (ODSC), which improves disk drive performance. An ODSC uses a separate disk partition to store disk data in the order that the operating system requests it. Storing data in this order reduces the amount of seeking that the disk drive must do. As a result, the average disk access time is reduced. Reducing the disk access time improves the performance of the system, especially when booting the operating system, loading applications, and when main memory is limited. Experiments show that our ODSC speeds up application loads by as much as 413%. Our ODSC also …

Guidelines For Parents On Homeschooling Deaf Children, Kalpana Varia Sep 2005

Guidelines For Parents On Homeschooling Deaf Children, Kalpana Varia

Theses

Many families have turned their family room into classrooms. In 1993, homeschooling became legal in all 50 states, when the number of students staying at home for schooling tripled. This trend continues today because parents want to retain control over the education and socialization of their children. Homeschooling refers to education of school-age children with their parents' guiding, directing, and monitoring them. It replaces full-time attendance at a traditional school. Parents express various reasons for educating their children at home; individualization, family time, strong academic, moral, and religious foundations. The problem with homeschooling, for parents of deaf children, is the …

Dspace, Institutional Repositories And The Open Access Movement: Why Should You Care?, Carol A. Parker Sep 2005

Dspace, Institutional Repositories And The Open Access Movement: Why Should You Care?, Carol A. Parker

Faculty Scholarship

The amount of digital scholarly output grows daily, yet only a small fraction of legal scholarly communication is published in traditional venues such as law reviews and journals. Some of this digital scholarly communication makes it to the Web and becomes a resource often referred to as "gray literature," but this can be a haphazard process at best. The UNM School of Law Library employs DSpace, an open source digital institutional repository, to enable the Law faculty to collect, preserve, index, and distribute their digital work, as well as to provide a community for peer review of works in progress. …

Teaching History To Deaf Students, Brooke Erickson Sep 2005

Teaching History To Deaf Students, Brooke Erickson

Theses

I have developed a curriculum based on the Salem Witch Trials incorporating the usage of "The Crucible" play written by Arthur Miller. Along with that concept, the topic of communism and Senator Joseph McCarthy will be discussed. Within this curriculum, students will be exposed to activities such as participating in class discussions, role-playing, designing a newspaper, conducting research, and writing a final paper by following the compare/contrast concept. This curriculum is expected to take a month to conduct and the students will be able to learn about how two time periods are similar to one another but yet different.
