Remembering The Good, Forgetting The Bad: Intentional Forgetting Of Emotional Material In Depression, Jutta Joormann, Paula T. Hertel, F. Brozovich, Ian Henry Gotlib Nov 2005

Remembering The Good, Forgetting The Bad: Intentional Forgetting Of Emotional Material In Depression, Jutta Joormann, Paula T. Hertel, F. Brozovich, Ian Henry Gotlib

Psychology Faculty Research

The authors examined intentional forgetting of negative material in depression. Participants were instructed to not think about emotional nouns that they had learned to associate with a neutral cue word. The authors provided participants with multiple occasions to suppress the unwanted words. Overall, depressed participants successfully forgot negative words. Moreover, the authors obtained a clear practice effect. However, forgetting came at a cost: Compared with the nondepressed participants and with the depressed participants who were instructed to forget positive words, depressed participants who were instructed to forget negative words showed significantly worse recall of the baseline words. These results indicate …

Women World Leaders: Comparative Analysis And Gender Experiences, Robert P. Watson, Alicia Jencik, Judith A. Selzer Nov 2005

Women World Leaders: Comparative Analysis And Gender Experiences, Robert P. Watson, Alicia Jencik, Judith A. Selzer

Journal of International Women's Studies

Research suggests that executive political office poses additional and different political challenges for women than legislative office. Yet, a few dozen women have attained their nations’ highest executive office. Surprisingly little research has been devoted to the experiences of these women world leaders. This study builds profiles of the women world leaders in the modern era and analyzes their backgrounds and political experiences in an effort to both identify commonalities among the women leaders and assess the challenges they faced on account of their sex.

Configurations: Encountering Ancient Athenian Spaces Of Rhetoric, Democracy, And Woman, Mari Lee Mifsud, Jane S. Sutton, Lindsey Fox Nov 2005

Configurations: Encountering Ancient Athenian Spaces Of Rhetoric, Democracy, And Woman, Mari Lee Mifsud, Jane S. Sutton, Lindsey Fox

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay encounters configurations of “woman” in the space of rhetoric and democracy. By “configuration” we mean how a woman is postured and positioned in this space. We deal in ancient Athens recognizing that an ancient conceptual space called rhetoric, an art or techne of civic discourse, is embedded in the contemporary lived space of American civic discourse always constructing the rhetorical figure of woman and continuously under construction. We explore this conceptual space rhetorically, that is, not to articulate the feelings or meanings the space would have had for the ancient Athenians, but rather to articulate how this conceptual …

Weight Control Behavior And Women: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Walcott-Mcquigg Nov 2005

Weight Control Behavior And Women: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Walcott-Mcquigg

Journal of International Women's Studies

The objective of this study was to seek directly from culturally diverse women information on their weight control behavior. Specific questions were: What types of weight control behavior are practiced by women? 2) What factors influence participation in weight control behavior? and, 3) what are the cultural influences on women’s motivation and ability to participate in weight control behavior? Face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 135 middle-income women (African American, Caucasian, Mexican American, Puerto Rican) in their homes, offices, and at other places in their neighborhoods. Additional data collection included measuring body weight and height. The …

“Nowadays Who Wants Many Children?”: Balancing Tradition And Modernity In Narratives Surrounding Contraception Use Among Poorer Women In West Bengal, India, Devalina Mookerjee Nov 2005

“Nowadays Who Wants Many Children?”: Balancing Tradition And Modernity In Narratives Surrounding Contraception Use Among Poorer Women In West Bengal, India, Devalina Mookerjee

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper investigates how poorer women in West Bengal, India balance the ideas of modernization and tradition in their choices to use birth control. Ideologically, Indian women have traditionally been placed within the context of the home and valued principally as wives and mothers. Children, therefore, are tremendously important for women within this framework. In contrast, the ideology of the relatively well structured and very large family planning program asks especially poorer women to have fewer children for the good of the family and the nation.

How do poorer, predominantly illiterate women balance these two oppositional ideas in an area …

Mainstreaming Gender In Hiv/Aids Programs: Ongoing Challenges And New Opportunities In Malawi, Rebecca Tiessen Nov 2005

Mainstreaming Gender In Hiv/Aids Programs: Ongoing Challenges And New Opportunities In Malawi, Rebecca Tiessen

Journal of International Women's Studies

Numerous efforts are in place in Malawi to address the high rates of HIV/AIDS in the country. Furthermore, several successes in HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation (including free anti-retroviral drugs to people living with AIDS) have been documented. Fewer successes, however, have been achieved in integrating gender issues into HIV/AIDS programs. In this article I begin by defining gender mainstreaming and why it is central to HIV/AIDS programming. The second objective of this paper is to summarize the existing initiatives to mainstream gender in HIV/AIDS programs. The final objective is to uncover the ongoing needs, gaps and challenges for gender mainstreaming …

‘Starving Children In Africa’: Who Cares?, Lisa Cassidy Nov 2005

‘Starving Children In Africa’: Who Cares?, Lisa Cassidy

Journal of International Women's Studies

The current state of global poverty presents citizens in the Global North with a moral crisis: Do we care? In this essay, I examine two competing moral accounts of why those in the North should or should not give care (in the form of charity) to impoverished peoples in the Global South. Nineteen years ago feminist philosopher Nel Noddings wrote in Caring that “we are not obliged to care for starving children in Africa” (1986, p. 86). Noddings’s work belongs to the arena of care ethics – the feminist philosophical view that morality is about responding to, caring for, and …

Planting The Seeds Of Change: Im/Migrant Life Writings, Michelle Johnson Vela Nov 2005

Planting The Seeds Of Change: Im/Migrant Life Writings, Michelle Johnson Vela

Journal of International Women's Studies

The subject of land, working it and owning it, is an inherent part of Chicano/a autobiography, as exemplified by the life writings of Elva Treviño Hart. The term “im/migrant” connotes transition and mobility, crossing borders, shifting parameters, all of which are fundamental facts of life for Chicano/a authors. A collective sense of community proves to be the only stasis in the narrators’ young lives, and the migrant camps become a microcosm in which societal and cultural rituals are conducted, despite the lack of control over the constantly shifting spaces they occupy. Being Mexican American, however, signifies a precarious existence in …

The Power Of Power In Supplier-Retailer Relationships, Nirmalya Kumar Nov 2005

The Power Of Power In Supplier-Retailer Relationships, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In his interesting paper, Martin Hingley makes a few key observations about power and role accorded to it in the relationship marketing literature that has become increasingly popular over the past decade. Fundamentally, the article states that the relationship marketing view sees power as alien to effective relationships, as negating cooperation, and as the antithesis of trust. In other words, power in a relationship is ‘‘only viewed in a negative sense’’. Or, alternatively, power is viewed as not important enough to include in relationship marketing models because firms have moved from transactional exchanges to relational exchange. It is contended by …

Confronting Death: Sixth Amendment Rights At Capital Sentencing, John G. Douglass Nov 2005

Confronting Death: Sixth Amendment Rights At Capital Sentencing, John G. Douglass

Law Faculty Publications

The Court's fragmentary approach has taken pieces of the Sixth Amendment and applied them to pieces of the capital sentencing process. The author contends that the whole of the Sixth Amendment applies to the whole of a capital case, whether the issue is guilt, death eligibility, or the final selection of who lives and who dies. In capital cases, there is one Sixth Amendment world, not two. In this Article, he argues for a unified theory of Sixth Amendment rights to govern the whole of a capital case. Because both Williams and the Apprendi-Ring-Booker line of cases purport to rest …

Accounting Conservatism And Managerial Incentives, Young Koan Kwon Nov 2005

Accounting Conservatism And Managerial Incentives, Young Koan Kwon

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

There are two sources of agency costs under moral hazard: (1) distortions in incentive contracts and (2) implementation of suboptimal decisions. In the accounting literature, the relation between conservative accounting and agency costs of type (1) has received considerable attention (cf. Watts 2002). However, little appears to be known about the effects of accounting conservatism on agency costs of type (2) or trade-offs between agency costs of types (1) and (2). The purpose of this study is to examine this void. In a principal-agent setting in which the principal motivates the agent to expend effort using accounting earnings, this study …

Well-Being, Burnout And Competence : Implications For Teachers., Hitendra Pillay, Richard Goddard, Lynn Wilss

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Traditionally, the teaching role has been one of nurturing and developing students’ potential. However, teachers’ work today comprises a complex mix of various factors that include teaching; learning new information and skills; keeping abreast of technological innovations and dealing with students, parents and the community. These are demanding roles and there are growing concerns about teacher well-being and competence. In particular, teachers are experiencing increasing levels of attrition, stress and burnout. This study investigated the relationship between burnout and competence for a sample of mid-career teachers in primary and secondary schools in Queensland. The results break new ground in reporting …

Changing Perceptions Of Knowledge : Evaluation Of An Innovative Program For Pre-Service Secondary Teachers., Neil Hooley, Rod Moore Nov 2005

Changing Perceptions Of Knowledge : Evaluation Of An Innovative Program For Pre-Service Secondary Teachers., Neil Hooley, Rod Moore

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Pre-service programs for secondary teachers have traditionally involved method subjects, where participants are inducted into the curriculum practices of two disciplinary or subject areas. In 2003, Victoria University of Technology, Melbourne, enrolled a small group of fourteen pre-service teachers into an innovative Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education that directly challenged these program assumptions. Method subjects were collapsed into an integrated study of the theory, skills and practices of classroom work and connections were drawn between all enrolled subjects or knowledge. Another key feature of the program involved all pre-service teachers being placed at the one school for their partnership experience, …

Scalable Energy-Efficient Location-Aided Routing (Selar) Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, George Lukachan Nov 2005

Scalable Energy-Efficient Location-Aided Routing (Selar) Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, George Lukachan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Large-scale wireless sensor networks consist of thousands of tiny and low cost nodes with very limited energy, computing power and communication capabilities. They have a myriad of possible applications. They can be used in hazardous and hostile environments to sense for deadly gases and high temperatures, in personal area networks to monitor vital signs, in military and civilian environments for intrusion detection and tracking, emergency operations, etc. In large scale wireless sensor networks the protocols need to be scalable and energy-efficient. Further, new strategies are needed to address the well-known energy depletion problem that nodes close to the sink node …

Bloggers Beware: The Five Commandments For Bloggers, Warren B. Chik Nov 2005

Bloggers Beware: The Five Commandments For Bloggers, Warren B. Chik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There is a need for Singapore bloggers to be aware of legal issues arising from their online diaries, particularly in the light of the recent cases involving seditious remarks made online by bloggers that resulted in jail terms and fines; and earlier in the year, a dispute arose over allegedly defamatory speeches made by a blogger about A*STAR’s Chairman, Philip Yeo, which was resolved amicably, but not without an apology. The threats of legal repercussions in the form of civil lawsuits and criminal charges serve as reminders of the potential legal problems that can arise from blogging, and indeed from …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo Nov 2005

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We present a spatial map of the Italian House of Deputies during the XIII Legislature obtained by applying the Poole and Rosenthal methodology to roll call data. We estimate coordinates for almost all the 650 Deputies that were on the House’s floor at the time, and we aggregate them according to parties. We find that voting patters generate basically a two dimensional political space. The first dimension represents loyalty to either the ruling coalition or the opposing one. The second dimension is represented by the European Union. These findings are consistent with the exceptional case of the party Northern League, …

The Summer Has Ended And We Are Not Saved! Towards A Transformative Agenda For Africa's Development, Nsongurua J. Udombana Nov 2005

The Summer Has Ended And We Are Not Saved! Towards A Transformative Agenda For Africa's Development, Nsongurua J. Udombana

San Diego International Law Journal

This Article examines the promised debt relief and commends the G8 for taking the initiative to assist a continent in crisis. The Article, however, argues that debt relief is far from a complete cure, and that Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) needs more than handouts from the G8 to overcome poverty. Debt relief is merely the end of the beginning; it is, at best, a gesture of support to Africa's effort at meeting human security, which the African Union (A.U.) defines as "the security of the individual in terms of satisfaction of his/her basic needs." Africa's problems are conspicuous, though their solutions …

Legislative And Policy Responses To Terrorism, A Global Perspective, Amos N. Guiora Nov 2005

Legislative And Policy Responses To Terrorism, A Global Perspective, Amos N. Guiora

San Diego International Law Journal

While Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, would strike most Americans as the starting date for terrorism- at least as understood by a recently attacked America- the truth is very different both from the American and international perspective. The scope and intensity of the attack that Tuesday morning dramatically changed the American response to terrorism in the short-term and long-term. The change in America's response has impacted the American political debate, its way of life, and its legal and policy perspectives regarding terrorism and counter-terrorism alike. September 11 also had a global impact from an operational, intelligence-gathering, policy and legal perspective. …

Mara Salvatrucha (Ms-13) And Ley Anti Mara: El Salvador's Struggle To Reclaim Social Order, Juan J. Fogelbach Nov 2005

Mara Salvatrucha (Ms-13) And Ley Anti Mara: El Salvador's Struggle To Reclaim Social Order, Juan J. Fogelbach

San Diego International Law Journal

MS-13 poses a threat to both Salvadorians and Americans. It is a gang that must be cooperatively contained; it will not be controlled by a simplistic burden-shifting policy that leaves El Salvador, a developing country, to unilaterally deal with the problem. This paper will argue that: (1) the deportation of gang members, which results in the arbitrary deaths of thousands of innocent Salvadorians who have no legal recourse amounts to a grave violation of human rights; (2) deportation of gang members to a society where they are likely to be killed by vigilante death squads, or in prison fires and …

A Grasp For Unitary Space-Time Codes, Adam Panagos, Kurt Louis Kosbar Nov 2005

A Grasp For Unitary Space-Time Codes, Adam Panagos, Kurt Louis Kosbar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Unitary space-time codes perform well at high signal-to-noise ratios on MIMO channels even when the propagation coefficients between transmitter and receiver are unknown. One method of constructing unitary space-time constellations uses a random search to find signal constellations that minimize the maximum pairwise correlation between transmitted signals. The work presented here uses a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) for finding good unitary space-time code constellations. Simulation results show that, on average, this technique finds codes with better correlation properties than the random search method. This new search procedure was also used to find signal constellations with better correlation properties …
