Three Choral Compositions By Alice Parker: A Conductor's Analysis Of Songstream, Angels And Challengers, And Songs From "The Dragon Quilt", Jennifer Sue King

LSU Major Papers

Alice Parker (b. 1925) has earned a place of respect in choral music through more than half a century of work in arranging and composition, conducting, teaching and writing. Her works reflect diverse interests, from short, unison pieces for treble choir, to the complexity of unaccompanied madrigals, to major choral/orchestral works and operas. Conductors and singers all over the world have been influenced by her writings, seminars and SINGS, and she continues to extol the value of music, both in the concert hall and as a part of everyday life. Scholarly research of her choral compositions is limited, and further …

American Wholesalers And Distributor’S Directory [Book Review], Leticia Camacho Jan 2005

American Wholesalers And Distributor’S Directory [Book Review], Leticia Camacho

Faculty Publications

At the beginning of the Internet era business experts predicted that wholesale distributors would disappear. They thought that in the new electronic world the middleman would be cut and manufacturers would “source and sell” directly to customers. Many proclaimed that this was the end of traditional selling and distribution. The reality, however, is that there are still a few traditional wholesalers outperforming the market. The reason for their success is their concentration in local markets, local suppliers, distribution channels and prime licensing. The new edition of the American Wholesalers and Distributors Directory provides access information to these wholesalers and distributors.

What Is A Copy?, Jeffrey Malkan Jan 2005

What Is A Copy?, Jeffrey Malkan

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Copyright law encourages artistic and literary expression by policing copying and embracing the value of originality. To some degree, however, originality comes into focus only through the lens of copying, its unacknowledged, dark twin. The questions I ask in this inquiy are both "what" and "why "? What is the difference between a work and a copy? If there is a difference, why is the copy less worthy than the original? In my consideration of these questions, I draw upon a body of theory that attempts to explain the unequal status conferred by the art world on perceptually indiscernible objects-authentic …

Effects Of A Smaller Unit Cell Planar Ebg Structure On The Mutual Coupling Of A Printed Dipole Array, M. Faisal Abedin, Mohammod Ali Jan 2005

Effects Of A Smaller Unit Cell Planar Ebg Structure On The Mutual Coupling Of A Printed Dipole Array, M. Faisal Abedin, Mohammod Ali

Faculty Publications

A new smaller unit-cell planar electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure is proposed on low dielectric constant low-cost substrate (TMM: epsilon(r) = 4.5, thickness = 25 mils) that has a stopband frequency at around 4 GHz. The proposed structure when placed in between a two-element printed dipole array results in over 13-dB reduction in mutual coupling and a significant improvement in antenna return loss bandwidth and gain pattern.

Flexible Multiobjective Control Of Power Converter In Active Hybrid Fuel Cell/Battery Power Sources, Zhenhua Jiang, Lijun Gao, Roger A. Dougal Jan 2005

Flexible Multiobjective Control Of Power Converter In Active Hybrid Fuel Cell/Battery Power Sources, Zhenhua Jiang, Lijun Gao, Roger A. Dougal

Faculty Publications

Hybrid power sources composed of fuel cells and secondary batteries can combine the high energy density of fuel cells with the high power density of batteries. A dc/dc power converter can be placed between the fuel cell and the battery to balance the power flow and greatly augment the peak output power. This paper presents a novel, flexible strategy for multiobjective control of the power converter in the hybrid power source. The control strategy is able to regulate the output current of the fuel cell and the charging current or voltage of the battery while limiting the discharging current of …

Crystal Growth, Characterization And Anisotropic Electrical Properties Of Gase Single Crystals For Thz Source And Radiation Detector Applications, K. C. Mandal, C. Noblitt, M. Choi, A. Smirnov, R. D. Rauh

Faculty Publications

The single crystal growth of large semi‐insulating GaSe by the vertical Bridgman technique using zone‐refined selenium (Se) and HP gallium (Ga) is described. The grown crystals (up to 10 cm long and 2.5 cm diameter) have been characterized thoroughly by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive analysis by x‐rays (EDAX), optical absorption/transmission, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), charge carrier electrical property measurements, second harmonic test, and radiation detection measurements.

Evidence For Alignment Of The Rotation And Velocity Vectors In Pulsars, Simon Johnston, G. Hobbs, S. Vigeland, M. Kramer, J. M. Weisberg, A. G. Lyne Jan 2005

Evidence For Alignment Of The Rotation And Velocity Vectors In Pulsars, Simon Johnston, G. Hobbs, S. Vigeland, M. Kramer, J. M. Weisberg, A. G. Lyne

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

We review our case for strong observational evidence for a relationship between the direction of a pulsar’s motion and its rotation axis. The information comes from calibrated polarization data for 20 pulsars which display linearly polarized emission from the pulse longitude at closest approach to the magnetic pole. Of these 20 pulsars, 10 show an offset in the angle between the velocity vector and the polarisation position angle which is either less than 10◦ or more than 80◦ , a fraction which is very unlikely by random chance. We believe that the bimodal nature of the distribution arises from the …

Coarse-Grained Entropy Decrease And Phase-Space Focusing In Hamiltonian Dynamics, Arjendu K. Pattanayak, Daniel W. C. Brooks, Anton De La Fuente, Lawrence Uricchio, Edward Holby, Daniel Krawisz, Jorge I. Silva Jan 2005

Coarse-Grained Entropy Decrease And Phase-Space Focusing In Hamiltonian Dynamics, Arjendu K. Pattanayak, Daniel W. C. Brooks, Anton De La Fuente, Lawrence Uricchio, Edward Holby, Daniel Krawisz, Jorge I. Silva

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

We analyze the behavior of the coarse-grained entropy for classical probabilities in nonlinear Hamiltonians. We focus on the result that if the trajectory dynamics are integrable, the probability ensemble shows transient increases in the coherence, corresponding to an increase in localization of the ensemble and hence the phasespace density of the ensemble. We discuss the connection of these dynamics to the problem of cooling in atomic ensembles. We show how these dynamics can be understood in terms of the behavior of individual trajectories, allowing us to manipulate ensembles to create “cold” dense final ensembles. We illustrate these results with an …

Low-Temperature Glassy Response Of Ultrathin La0.8ca0.2mn03 Films To Electric And Magnetic Fields, A. Bhattacharya, Melissa Eblen-Zayas,, N. E. Staley, A. L. Kobrinskii, A. M. Goldman Jan 2005

Low-Temperature Glassy Response Of Ultrathin La0.8ca0.2mn03 Films To Electric And Magnetic Fields, A. Bhattacharya, Melissa Eblen-Zayas,, N. E. Staley, A. L. Kobrinskii, A. M. Goldman

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

The glassy response of ultrathin films of La0.8Ca0.2MnO3 in the mixed phase to external magnetic and gated electro-static fields have been studied at low temperatures. The response of the resistance to external fields provides direct evidence for a hierarchical energy landscape, with strong cross-couplings between spin and charge. Magnetic coercivity measurements indicate that strong magnetic disorder accompanies the mixed phase in these films. This magnetic disorder, and the resultant coercivity, can be decreased by cooling in a large magnetic field or by electrostatic gating.
