Method Of Infant Feeding As A Predictor Of Maternal Responsiveness, Emily Eiwen Drake Jan 2005

Method Of Infant Feeding As A Predictor Of Maternal Responsiveness, Emily Eiwen Drake

Theses and Dissertations

Infants need to develop effective, secure attachment to their primary caregivers in the first year of life. Researchers have not been able to identify all the factors that may influence the development of infant attachment. Most of the studies in this area have been done without regard to infant feeding as a potential factor. Maternal responsiveness appears to be key in the child's development of secure attachment behaviors, yet even after decades of research on infant attachment and maternal responsiveness, there is little evidence available to assist with early identification of families at risk and few interventions known to be …

A Systems Approach To An Into Organizational Communication Within The Fire And Emergency Services Authority Of Western Australia : An Action Research Study, Ellen Jones Jan 2005

A Systems Approach To An Into Organizational Communication Within The Fire And Emergency Services Authority Of Western Australia : An Action Research Study, Ellen Jones

Theses : Honours

Research suggests that a rapidly changing environment due to advancing technology, globalization, expanding world markets, changing populations is resulting in the need for a change to workplace practices. Emerging issues due to an aging population and the anticipated shrinkage of the workforce with the retirement of the baby boomers is indicating the need for the development of new skills. Through a real-life case study, this thesis looks into the aspects of organizational life that impact on effective communication. Through an action research approach implications are drawn from a systems theory view of communication. Action research and systems thinking enables the …

Spending Health Care Dollars Wisely: Can Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Help?, Milton C. Weinstein Jan 2005

Spending Health Care Dollars Wisely: Can Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Help?, Milton C. Weinstein

Center for Policy Research

Are we getting the most health improvement possible for our money. In other words, are all the things that we do in medicine really worth it? That is where cost-effectiveness comes in. As a nation, we have been unwilling, at least publicly, to look explicitly at the value, in terms of improved health outcome, that we get for our health care dollars. With advances in medical technology putting unsustainable pressure on health care costs, our historical reluctance to measure value for health care may have to change. I start this brief by describing cost-effectiveness analysis as a method of determining …

Labor Supply With Social Interactions: Econometric Estimates And Their Tax Policy Implications, Andrew Grodner, Thomas Kniesner Jan 2005

Labor Supply With Social Interactions: Econometric Estimates And Their Tax Policy Implications, Andrew Grodner, Thomas Kniesner

Center for Policy Research

Our research fleshes out econometric details of examining possible social interactions in labor supply. We look for a response of a person's hours worked to hours worked in the labor market reference group, which includes those with similar age, family structure, and location. We identify endogenous spillovers by instrumenting average hours worked in the reference group with hours worked in neighboring reference groups. Estimates of the canonical labor supply model indicate positive economically important spillovers for adult men. The estimated total wage elasticity of labor supply is 0.22, where 0.08 is the exogenous wage change effect and 0.14 is the …

Cox-Mcfadden Partial And Marginal Likelihoods For The Proportional Hazard Model With Random Effects, Jan Ondrich Jan 2005

Cox-Mcfadden Partial And Marginal Likelihoods For The Proportional Hazard Model With Random Effects, Jan Ondrich

Center for Policy Research

In survival analysis, Cox's name is associated with the partial likelihood technique that allows consistent estimation of proportional hazard scale parameters without specifying a duration dependence baseline. In discrete choice analysis, McFadden's name is associated with the generalized extreme-value (GEV) class of logistic choice models that relax the independence of irrelevant alternatives assumption. This paper shows that the mixed class of proportional hazard specifications allowing consistent estimation of scale and mixing parameters using partial likelihood is isomorphic to the GEV class. Independent censoring is allowed and I discuss approximations to the partial likelihood in the presence of ties. Finally, the …

Why Do Real Estate Brokers Continue To Discriminate? Evidence From The 2000 Housing Discrimination Study, Bo Zhao, Jan Ondrich, John Yinger Jan 2005

Why Do Real Estate Brokers Continue To Discriminate? Evidence From The 2000 Housing Discrimination Study, Bo Zhao, Jan Ondrich, John Yinger

Center for Policy Research

This paper studies racial and ethnic discrimination in discrete choices by real estate brokers using national audit data from the 2000 Housing Discrimination Study. It uses a fixed effects logit model to estimate the probability that discrimination occurs and to study the causes of discrimination. The data set makes it possible to control for auditors' actual demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, along with the characteristics assigned for the purposes of the audit. The study finds that discrimination continues to be strong but also documents a downward trend in both the scope and incidence of discrimination since 1989. The estimations also identify …

Incorporating Literature Into A Health Law Curriculum, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2005

Incorporating Literature Into A Health Law Curriculum, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

Literature has had a long relationship with medicine through literary images of disease, literary images of physicians and other healers, works of literature by physician-writers, and the use of literature as a method of active or passive healing. Literature also has had a long relationship with the law through literary images of various legal processes, lawyers, and judges, works of literature by lawyer-writers, and the use of literature as therapy. How can the field of law and literature inform the study of health law? And how can the field of literature and medicine help the field of law and literature …

Limitations And Potentials Of Current Motif Discovery Algorithms, Jianjun Hu, Bin Li, D. Kihara Jan 2005

Limitations And Potentials Of Current Motif Discovery Algorithms, Jianjun Hu, Bin Li, D. Kihara

Faculty Publications

Computational methods for de novo identification of gene regulation elements, such as transcription factor binding sites, have proved to be useful for deciphering genetic regulatory networks. However, despite the availability of a large number of algorithms, their strengths and weaknesses are not sufficiently understood. Here, we designed a comprehensive set of performance measures and benchmarked five modern sequence-based motif discovery algorithms using large datasets generated from Escherichia coli RegulonDB. Factors that affect the prediction accuracy, scalability and reliability are characterized. It is revealed that the nucleotide and the binding site level accuracy are very low, while the motif level accuracy …

The Effects Of Idea Elaboration On Unconscious Plagiarism, Louisa-Jayne Stark Jan 2005

The Effects Of Idea Elaboration On Unconscious Plagiarism, Louisa-Jayne Stark

School of Psychology Theses

Rates of unconscious plagiarism were investigated using Brown and Murphy's 3-stage paradigm. Initially, participants completed the creative Alternate Uses Test (generation phase) and then at test, recalled their original ideas (recall-own phase) and generated new ideas (generate-new phase). In both of the testing phases, participants plagiarised by reporting someone else's ideas as either their own idea or a new idea. Plagiarism rates increased over a one week retention interval (Experiment 2) and both active and passive participants were equally likely to plagiarise someone else's idea as a new idea (Experiment 1). When an elaboration phase was incorporated into the paradigm, …

Consumer Sensory Acceptance And Value Of Domestic, Canadian, And Australian Grass-Fed Beef Steaks, B. M. Sitz, Chris R. Calkins, D. M. Feuz, W. J. Umberger, Kent M. Eskridge Jan 2005

Consumer Sensory Acceptance And Value Of Domestic, Canadian, And Australian Grass-Fed Beef Steaks, B. M. Sitz, Chris R. Calkins, D. M. Feuz, W. J. Umberger, Kent M. Eskridge

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

To determine US consumer acceptance and value of beef from various countries, 24 taste panels of consumers (n = 273 consumers) were conducted in Denver and Chicago. Two pairs of strip steaks were evaluated for flavor, juiciness, tenderness, and overall acceptability on eight-point hedonic scales. One pair consisted of an Australian grass-fed strip steak and a domestic strip steak, whereas the other pair included Canadian and domestic strip steaks. The pairs were matched to similar Warner-Bratzler shear values and marbling scores to decrease variation associated with tenderness and juiciness. A variation of the Vickery auction was used to obtain silent, …

Not Playing Around: The Chilling Power Of The Federal Trademark Dilution Act Of 1995, Julie Zando-Dennis Jan 2005

Not Playing Around: The Chilling Power Of The Federal Trademark Dilution Act Of 1995, Julie Zando-Dennis

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The Federal Trademark Dilution Act of 1995 (FTDA) has become a powerful tool for corporations to suppress criticism and parody, undermining free speech by allowing broad claims of trademark dilution without requiring proof of consumer confusion. The note argues that the FTDA’s provisions against dilution, including blurring and tarnishment, disproportionately favor corporate interests over First Amendment rights, particularly in cases involving parody and satire. Courts have inconsistently applied the law, with some circuits offering protections for parody while others prioritize trademark protection, creating uncertainty and chilling artistic and activist expression. The note advocates for reform to balance trademark rights with …

Hacking The Gender Binary Myth: Recognizing Fundamental Rights For The Intersexed, Sara R. Benson Jan 2005

Hacking The Gender Binary Myth: Recognizing Fundamental Rights For The Intersexed, Sara R. Benson

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that current medical practices allowing parents and doctors to assign a physical sex to intersex children through surgery violate the child's fundamental rights to bodily integrity, personality, gender identity, and sexuality. These rights, while not yet fully defined in jurisprudence, provide a framework for protecting individuals from unwarranted governmental and medical intrusion. The article advocates for delaying such decisions until the child can consent, drawing on the Colombian Constitutional Court's recognition of a child's right to develop their gender identity. It also highlights the broader implications for transgender rights and challenges societal gender binaries.

Cutting It: Surgical Interventions And The Sexing Of Children, Marie Fox, Michael Thomson Jan 2005

Cutting It: Surgical Interventions And The Sexing Of Children, Marie Fox, Michael Thomson

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques the normalization of non-consensual surgical interventions on children, particularly focusing on male circumcision and intersex surgeries, arguing that these practices are rooted in cultural and gender norms rather than medical necessity. It challenges the legal and ethical frameworks that allow such surgeries, emphasizing the need for informed consent and stricter regulations.

Distracted Attentions: Intersexuality And Human Rights Protections, Morgan Holmes Jan 2005

Distracted Attentions: Intersexuality And Human Rights Protections, Morgan Holmes

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the medicalization of intersex conditions, often justified under an "emergency" rationale, undermines the autonomy and human rights of intersex individuals, particularly children. It critiques the framing of intersex as a medical emergency, which allows clinicians to bypass informed consent and prioritize the interests of families and medical professionals over those of the intersex individual. The article advocates for a shift in approach, emphasizing human rights protections and the need to respect the autonomy of intersex persons.

Do Prisoners Get A Better Deal? Comparing The Abortion Rights And Access Of Military Women Stationed Abroad To Those Of Women In Prison, Leah Ginsberg Jan 2005

Do Prisoners Get A Better Deal? Comparing The Abortion Rights And Access Of Military Women Stationed Abroad To Those Of Women In Prison, Leah Ginsberg

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the systemic barriers faced by military women and incarcerated individuals in accessing abortion services, despite Supreme Court rulings that establish a woman's right to abortion. It highlights how statutory bans, restrictive policies, and logistical challenges disproportionately affect these groups, arguing that their unique circumstances—such as overseas deployment or incarceration—subject them to additional layers of legal and practical obstacles. The analysis underscores the need for legislative or executive action to address these inequities and ensure constitutional rights are upheld.

On Academic Discrimination, Janet Ainsworth Jan 2005

On Academic Discrimination, Janet Ainsworth

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques the argument that women's underrepresentation in the physical sciences is due to innate intellectual inferiority or a lack of willingness to work long hours. It challenges the assumptions underlying such claims, arguing that discrimination and socialization play significant roles, and that the notion of requiring "super-intelligence" for academic success is overstated and unproven. The author advocates for addressing systemic biases and unstated assumptions in academia rather than focusing on debates about innate differences.
