The Life And Work Of Nick Fofonoff, T. J. Mcdougall, R. W. Schmitt, G. Veronis, F. Webster

Journal of Marine Research

Nicholas Paul Fofonoff was born August 18, 1929, and raised on a small farm near Queenstown in Alberta, Canada. His parents spoke only Russian at home, so Nick did not learn English until he attended the two-room school that served the first six grades for the town of 200. He was the second born of four, the prince among three sisters. The small school meant he was exposed to several grades at a time and could advance quickly. He also learned many practical skills on the farm from a clever father and the necessity to be self-sufficient. It was a …

The Evolution Of Originality In Canadian Copyright Law: Authorship, Reward And The Public Interest, Carys J. Craig Jan 2005

The Evolution Of Originality In Canadian Copyright Law: Authorship, Reward And The Public Interest, Carys J. Craig

Articles & Book Chapters

Originality is a foundational concept in copyright law: it defines the works to which copyright attaches and delineates the scope of protection they receive. The Supreme Court of Canada, in its recent ruling in CCH Canadian Ltd. v. Law Society of Upper Canada, appears to have settled the conflict between creativity and sweat-of-the-brow standards for originality, espousing a compromise position requiring "skill and judgment." In this paper, the author aims to locate the evolution of the originality doctrine within the context of a foundational shift in Canadian copyright theory. When "benefiting authors" was copyright's only recognized purpose, originality was determined …

Interpreting Reality: ‘Los Olvidados’ And The Documentary Mode, Julie Jones Jan 2005

Interpreting Reality: ‘Los Olvidados’ And The Documentary Mode, Julie Jones

Foreign Languages Faculty Publications

The article presents a study on the documentary film "Los olvidados," by Louis Buñuel. The study is concerned with the elements in the film itself that align it with documentary practice. At the same time it gives equal weight to the presentation of the film and to contemporary reviews in the press. These elements stressed the film's serious social purpose and thereby reinforced an interpretation of the work as nonfiction. The author informs that this study is not concerned with any final classification of the film. It is concerned with an examination of those elements that make this documentary reading …

Market-Orientation And The Multi-Factor Productivity Of Cherokee Indian Farmers Before Removal, Matthew T. Gregg Jan 2005

Market-Orientation And The Multi-Factor Productivity Of Cherokee Indian Farmers Before Removal, Matthew T. Gregg

Business Faculty Publications

The efficiency of Cherokee Indian agriculture before removal has been debated since the early nineteenth century, yet no study has employed quantitative methods to estimate the multifactor productivity of these farmers. For this investigation I employed a unique census collected in 1835 to estimate Cherokee household-level technical efficiency and scale elasticities to determine which group (classified in terms of economic and racial characteristics) within this diverse Nation achieved the highest farm productivity. The analysis reveals that among non-slaveholding Cherokee!r--the majority of Cherokee households in the Southeast--market-oriented units that were unrelated to any particular household racial composition achieved the highest …

If You Build It, Will They Come? Challenges In E-Learning Delivery System Choice, Jane Saber, Isaura Flores, Mary Helen Fagan, Carol Kilmon, Janith Williams, Kristina Ibitayo

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study incorporates principles derived from ‘mindful technology adoption’, instructional design, technology acceptance models, and target learner needs assessments in order to determine whether or not e-learning technologies would be used by multi-organizational health administrators in their re-accreditation processes. It was initially hypothesized that these nontraditional, geographically dispersed, computer literate learners would be likely to use the elearning technologies, due to course flexibility, their full time work status, age and other variables. Results indicate that the sample had lower than expected intentions to use online learning resources, predictions that they would to use online learning resources, and plans to use …
