This article examines methodological issues related to the measurement of implicit motives in culturally divergent samples. Implicit motives are seen as basic needs shared by all human beings. However, cross-cultural comparisons are very restricted because many cross-cultural studies on implicit motives with non- Western cultures developed and discussed culture-inherent stimuli. The aim of the study here was to search for a culture-independent set of picture stimuli measuring two basic motives (affiliation and power motive) in three different cultures. This study explores the local news story for evidence of the folktale tradition. It examines a range of local news stories for their folktale functions. The study compares the cultural and psychological function of the news story to that of the folktale and compares the functional definition of folklore to that of journalism. The study also explores the idea of a classifiable sphere of formal character, motif and plot functions that may be explored within the news story and folktale texts. Genomic Rearrangements By Line-1 Insertion-Mediated Deletion In The Human And Chimpanzee Lineages, Kyudong Han, Shurjo K. Sen, Jianxin Wang, Pauline A. Callinan, Jungnam Lee, Richard Cordaux, Ping Liang, Mark A. Batzer

Long INterspersed Elements (LINE-1s or L1s) are abundant non-LTR retrotransposons in mammalian genomes that are capable of insertional mutagenesis. They have been associated with target site deletions upon insertion in cell culture studies of retrotransposition. Here, we report 50 deletion events in the human and chimpanzee genomes directly linked to the insertion of L1 elements, resulting in the loss of ∼18 kb of sequence from the human genome and ∼15 kb from the chimpanzee genome. Our data suggest that during the primate radiation, L1 insertions may have deleted up to 7.5 Mb of target genomic sequences. While the results of …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Tradition can be seen from two different perspectives, those of literacy (writing system) and of oral tradition. Recently, some intellectuals have shown interest in oral tradition as academic study in some universities. Oral tradition is not supposed to be seen merely as part of the past and a cultural entity of no importance. This paper describes the two traditions of oral literature and manuscript writing as a basis for local historical knowledge and records of cultural politics. The discussion will be more about the content of tradition that is related to the history of cultural politics than a historical observation.

Controls On The Seasonal Exchange Of Ch3br In Temperate Peatlands, Marguerite L. White, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill, Cindy H. Mosedale

Measurements of CH3Br exchange at two New Hampshire peatlands (Sallie's Fen and Angie's Bog) indicate that net flux from these ecosystems is the sum of competing production and consumption processes. Net CH3Br fluxes were highly variable and ranged from net emission to net uptake between locations within a single peatland. At Sallie's Fen, net CH3Br flux exhibited positive correlations with peat temperature and air temperature during all seasons sampled, but these relationships were not observed at Angie's Bog where flux varied according to microtopography. The major CH3Br production process at Sallie's Fen appeared dependent on aerobic conditions within the peat, …

The New Yorker cartoon, with its pessimistic emphasis on a child's economic prospects, provides a foil to the Whittington story and its optimistic attitude toward law and social possibility. I suggest in this talk that contemporary children's literature shares with the cartoon a similar lack of confidence in law's capacity to generate advancement and prosperity. My comments rely on Eleanor Updale's award-winning Montmorency series and Philip Pullman's widely acclaimed His Dark Materials trilogy to try to glean a better sense of cultural understandings of law and of law's contemporary relation to social mobility. A qualitative and quantitative reanalysis of the Six Cultures data on children’s play, collected in the 1950s, was performed to revisit worlds of childhood during a time when sample communities were more isolated from mass markets and media than they are today. A count was performed of children aged 3 to 10 in each community sample scored as engaging in creative-constructive play, fantasy play, role play, and games with rules. Children from Nyansongo and Khalapur scored lowest overall, those from Tarong and Juxtlahuaca scored intermediate, and those from Taira and Orchard Town scored highest. As the Hay-Vincentian Leadership Project (HLP) becomes international in scope, Vincentian values must be applied in and sometimes adapted to cross-cultural contexts. The concepts of cultural diversity, cultural competence, and cultural intelligence are explained in general and against a Vincentian background. Qualities that make leaders effective in cross-cultural situations are explored. Vincent de Paul set an example for such success in the preparation he mandated for those going on foreign missions and in the sensitivity he showed in his own work with people from other cultures. Culture’s relationship to leadership is examined using the work of the anthropologist Edward Hall …
