Descriptive Adequacy Vs. Psychological Reality: The Case Of Two Restrictions On Spanish Stress Placement, Scott M. Alvord, Timothy L. Face Oct 2005

Descriptive Adequacy Vs. Psychological Reality: The Case Of Two Restrictions On Spanish Stress Placement, Scott M. Alvord, Timothy L. Face

Faculty Publications

This paper examines two supposed restrictions on Spanish stress placement: 1) the heavy penult condition, which prohibits stress leftward of the penultimate syllable if the penultimate syllable is heavy, and 2) the three-syllable window condition, which prohibits stress other than on one of the final three syllables of a word. While these two conditions are clearly descriptively adequate generalizations about the lexicon, this study sets out to determine whether they are psychologically real restrictions, serving as constraints that prohibit words that violate them. The results of a perception study indicate that neither of these conditions is a psychologically real restriction …

Moral Responsiveness And Discontinuity In Therapy: A Qualitative Study, Jason B. Whiting Phd, R. Scott Nebeker, Stephen T. Fife Oct 2005

Moral Responsiveness And Discontinuity In Therapy: A Qualitative Study, Jason B. Whiting Phd, R. Scott Nebeker, Stephen T. Fife

Faculty Publications

Phenomenological qualitative methods were used to identify and describe moral elements in therapeutic relationships. Using the relational philosophy of E. Levinas (1961/1969, 1979/1987) as a base, data in which therapists and clients identified and described morally responsive experiences in therapy sessions were analyzed. These moments were often unexpected and included categories of surprise, interruption, willingness to change, and clarifications/repairs. Additional moral phenomena related to therapists' attitudes included asymmetrical indebtedness, attitude of serving, and tentativeness of diagnosis. Identified moments of moral responsiveness were frequently associated with clients' progress in therapy. This suggests that conceptually smooth and uninterrupted therapy may be less …

Privatizing Due Process, Paul R. Verkuil Oct 2005

Privatizing Due Process, Paul R. Verkuil

Articles

The article explores the concept of "private due process," arguing that while traditional due process protections under the Constitution require state action, privatization of government functions creates gaps in procedural safeguards. It examines how state laws, federal regulations, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms can fill these gaps and proposes a "Private Administrative Procedure Act" (PAPA) to ensure procedural fairness when government functions are delegated to private entities.

Multijet production rates in neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured in the range of exchanged boson virtualities 10 < Q 2 < 5000 GeV2. The data were taken at the ep collider HERA with centre-of-mass energy √s = 318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 82.2pb-1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of differential dijet and trijet cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse energy (ET,Bjet), pseudorapidity (ηLABjet) and Q2 with ET,Bjet > 5 GeV and -1 < ηLABjet < 2.5. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations describe the data well. The value of the strong coupling constant αs(MZ), determined from the ratio of the trijet to dijet cross sections, is αs(MZ) = 0.1179 ± 0.0013 (stat.)-0.0046-0.0028 (exp.) -0.0046+0.0064 (th.). © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2005.

Recruitment And Retention Of Emergency Medical Technicians: A Qualitative Study, P. Daniel Patterson, Janice C. Probst, Katherine H. Leith, Sara J. Corwin, M. Paige Powell

Faculty Publications

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are critical to out-of-hospital care, but maintaining staff can be difficult. The study objective was to identify factors that contribute to recruitment and retention of EMTs and paramedics. Information was drawn from three focus groups of EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic personnel recruited from participants at an annual conference. Thoughts and feelings of EMTs and paramedics were investigated using eight questions designed to explore entry into emergency medical services, what it is like to be an EMT or paramedic, and the EMT educational process. Data were analyzed at the group level for common themes using NVivo. For …

On The Need For Green Accounting, Joseph S. Merrill, Richard V. Calvasina Oct 2005

On The Need For Green Accounting, Joseph S. Merrill, Richard V. Calvasina

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

It is time to argue that it is imperative for green accounting to be the norm for financial reporting. Green accounting requires the disclosure of environmental impacts of corporations’ activities as a component of financial reports. Green accounting disclosure is a vital part of information needed for investment decisions that can help create a sustainable economy. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) efforts to require such disclosure will be examined and recommendations for more adequate disclosure will be discussed.

Improving Critical Thinking And Inference Skills With The Monty Hall Problem, Robert J. Dosch Oct 2005

Improving Critical Thinking And Inference Skills With The Monty Hall Problem, Robert J. Dosch

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Students’ critical thinking skills have been linked to success in undergraduate auditing classes (Jenkins, 1998), and to their perceived success in public accounting (Baril et al., 1998). This paper presents an assignment used in an undergraduate auditing class that serves as a stepping stone in the development of critical thinking, technology, and communication skills. The assignment requires students to solve a problem whose answer is not intuitive to many people, and requires the use of spreadsheets and written communication. It should be noted that this exercise has general applicability across multiple business disciplines.

Maximum Size Of Fish Caught With Standard Gears And Recreational Angling, Kevin L. Pope, Gene R. Wilde, Daryl L. Bauer Oct 2005

Maximum Size Of Fish Caught With Standard Gears And Recreational Angling, Kevin L. Pope, Gene R. Wilde, Daryl L. Bauer

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We correlated maximum lengths of freshwater fishes captured during 10 years with standard gears (i.e., gill nets, boat electrofishers and trap nets) and angling from Nebraska water bodies to determine which methodology provided better estimates of maximum size of fishes produced within a given water body. In general, maximum length of fishes captured with standard gears was smaller than maximum length of fishes captured with angling. Although significant (based on sequential Bonferroni adjustment) correlation was found in only one of nine sport fishes assessed, all correlations were positive indicating a general trend between maximum size of fishes captured with these …

Our Federal System Of Sentencing, Rachel E. Barkow Oct 2005

Our Federal System Of Sentencing, Rachel E. Barkow

Faculty Articles

Barkow highlights why trends in federal system of sentencing are problematic and why it is important for Congress to pay close attention to federalism values when considering sentencing policy. Among others, he begins by discussing the appropriately limited nature of federal criminal jurisdiction. Afterwards explains that limited federal jurisdiction over crimes is particularly important because of shortcomings in the politics of sentencing at the federal level as compared to the politics of sentencing at the state level and because of the greater ability of the states to respond to the diverse preferences of local communities.

Estimating The Required Return In A World Of Heightened Uncertainty: Emphasizing The Equity Risk Premium, James L. Grant, James A. Albate, Chris Rowberry

Financial Services Forum Publications

Heightened uncertainty over the past five years--due to the bursting of the NASDAQ bubble, the recession of 2001, the September 11th attacks, accounting scandals, and the oil shocks of 2005--has brought new challenges for securities analysts and portfolio managers. This observation is particularly relevant for fundamental equity managers using price relative and/or discounted cash flow (DCF) models. While correctly worrying about values of cash flow input (dividends, free cash flow, economic earnings) to DCF models, portfolio managers must be especially aware of risk factors that impact the required return or discount rate, and relatedly, market valuation multiples. This discount rate …

Evaluation Of African-American And White Racial Classification In A Surveillance, Epidemiology, And End Results Cancer Registry, Diva A. Patel, Alicia Knowles, Ann G. Schwartz, Kendra Schwartz

FMPHS Faculty Publications

Objectives: This study evaluated the validity of registry-reported race for individuals who participated in research studies conducted since 1980 through the Metropolitan Detroit Cancer Surveillance System (MDCSS), a Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program registry.

Methods: 5329 individuals who self-identified as African American or White and were classified in the MDCSS registry as African American or White were included. Self-identified and registry-reported race were compared, and associations between demographics and racial misclassification were examined.

Results: Most self-identified African Americans and Whites were correctly classified (sensitivity= 98.5%, specificity=99.7%). Males were two times more likely to be misclassified than females [odds …

The Theory Of Planned Behavior: Predicting Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness In African American Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna, Nate Mccaughtry, Donetta Cothran, Joe Dake, Gail Frances Fahoome

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the ability of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to predict African American children’s moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and cardiorespiratory fitness. Children (N = 548, ages 9–12) completed questionnaires assessing the TPB constructs and MVPA and then had their cardiorespiratory fitness assessed with the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) test. Commonly used Structural Equation Modeling fit indices suggested the model was an adequate representation for the relationships within the data. However, results also suggested an extended model which was examined and supported. Tests of direct paths from subjective …

Gentrification And Neighborhood Housing Cycles: Will America's Future Downtowns Be Rich?, Jan K. Brueckner, Stuart S. Rosenthal Oct 2005

Gentrification And Neighborhood Housing Cycles: Will America's Future Downtowns Be Rich?, Jan K. Brueckner, Stuart S. Rosenthal

Economics - All Scholarship

This paper identifies a new factor, the age of the housing stock, that affects where high- and low-income neighborhoods are located in U.S. cities. High-income households, driven by a high demand for housing services, will tend to locate in areas of the city where the housing stock is relatively young. Because cities develop and redevelop from the center outward over time, the location of these neighborhoods varies over the city's history. The model predicts a suburban location for the rich in an initial period, when young dwellings are found only in the suburbs, while predicting eventual gentrification once central redevelopment …

Acoustic And Spectral Characteristics Of Young Children’S Fricative Productions: A Developmental Perspective, Shawn L. Nissen, Robert Allen Fox

Faculty Publications

Scientists have made great strides toward understanding the mechanisms of speech production and perception. However, the complex relationships between the acoustic structures of speech and the resulting psychological percepts have yet to be fully and adequately explained, especially in speech produced by younger children. Thus, this study examined the acoustic structure of voiceless fricatives /f, s, b/ produced by adults and typically developing children from 3 to 6 years of age in terms of multiple acoustic parameters durations, normalized amplitude, spectral slope, and spectral moments. It was found that the acoustic parameters of spectral slope and variance commonly excluded from …

The 7 May 2001 Induced Seismic Event In The Ekofisk Oil Field, North Sea, L. Ottemöller, H. H. Nielsen, K. Atakan, Jochen Braunmiller, J. Havskov

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

A moderate size seismic event on 7 May 2001 was strongly felt on platforms in the Ekofisk oil field, in the southern North Sea, but did not cause damage to platforms or wells. We combined near- and far-field observations to develop a consistent source model and to determine whether the event was induced. Seismic data placed the epicenter inside the Ekofisk field and suggested a shallow source depth based on spectral and moment tensor analysis. GPS data from the Ekofisk platforms displayed permanent vertical and horizontal movement due to the event. A topographic bulge in the sea bottom, revealed by …
