Semiclassical States, Effective Dynamics, And Classical Emergence In Loop Quantum Cosmology, Parampreet Singh, Kevin Vandersloot Oct 2005

Semiclassical States, Effective Dynamics, And Classical Emergence In Loop Quantum Cosmology, Parampreet Singh, Kevin Vandersloot

Faculty Publications

We construct physical semiclassical states annihilated by the Hamiltonian constraint operator in the framework of loop quantum cosmology as a method of systematically determining the regime and validity of the semiclassical limit of the quantum theory. Our results indicate that the evolution can be effectively described using continuous classical equations of motion with nonperturbative corrections down to near the Planck scale below which the Universe can only be described by the discrete quantum constraint. These results, for the first time, provide concrete evidence of the emergence of classicality in loop quantum cosmology and also clearly demarcate the domain of validity …

We use 373 hours (≈15 days) of data from the second science run of the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors to search for signals from binary neutron star coalescences within a maximum distance of about 1.5 Mpc, a volume of space which includes the Andromeda Galaxy and other galaxies of the Local Group of galaxies. This analysis requires a signal to be found in data from detectors at the two LIGO sites, according to a set of coincidence criteria. The background (accidental coincidence rate) is determined from the data and is used to judge the significance of event candidates. No inspiral gravitational-wave …

We use data from the second science run of the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors to search for the gravitational waves from primordial black hole binary coalescence with component masses in the range 0.2-1.0M. The analysis requires a signal to be found in the data from both LIGO observatories, according to a set of coincidence criteria. No inspiral signals were found. Assuming a spherical halo with core radius 5 kpc extending to 50 kpc containing nonspinning black holes with masses in the range 0.2-1.0M, we place an observational upper limit on the rate of primordial black hole coalescence of 63 per year …

Potential Of Modis Evi And Surface Temperature For Directly Estimating Per-Pixel Ecosystem C Fluxes, Abdullah Rahman, Daniel A. Sims, Vicente D. Cordova, Bassil Z. El-Masri

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

We tested the potential of estimating per-pixel gross primary production (GPP) directly from the MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and respiration directly from MODIS surface temperature (MOD11). Carbon flux data were obtained from 10 eddy covariance tower sites representing a wide range of North American vegetations. The correlation between across-site tower GPP and EVI was comparable (r = 0.77) to that between tower GPP and MOD17-GPP (r = 0.73), suggesting that EVI could be used to provide reasonably accurate direct estimates of GPP on a truly per-pixel basis. There was also a strong relationship (r2 = 0.67) between respiration and …

Characterization Of A Likelihood Based Method And Effects Of Markers Informativeness In Evaluation Of Admixture And Population Group Assignment., Bao-Zhu Yang, Hongyu Zhao, Henry R. Kranzler, Joel Gelernter

SoM Articles

BACKGROUND: Detection and evaluation of population stratification are crucial issues in the conduct of genetic association studies. Statistical approaches useful for understanding these issues have been proposed; these methods rely on information gained from genotyping sets of markers that reflect population ancestry. Before using these methods, a set of markers informative for differentiating population genetic substructure (PGS) is necessary. We have previously evaluated the performance of a Bayesian clustering method implemented in the software STRUCTURE in detecting PGS with a particular informative marker set. In this study, we implemented a likelihood based method (LBM) in evaluating the informativeness of the …

Orbital Response Of Evanescent Cooper Pairs In Paramagnetically Limited Al Films, X. S. Wu, P. W. Adams, G. Catelani Oct 2005

Orbital Response Of Evanescent Cooper Pairs In Paramagnetically Limited Al Films, X. S. Wu, P. W. Adams, G. Catelani

Faculty Publications

We report a detailed study of the pairing resonance via tunneling density of states in ultrathin superconducting Al films in supercritical magnetic fields. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of the perpendicular component of the magnetic field on the resonance energy and magnitude. Though the resonance is broadened and attenuated by H as expected, its energy is shifted upward linearly with H. Extension of the original theory of the resonance to include strong perpendicular fields shows that at sufficiently large H the overlap of the broadened resonance tail with the underlying degenerate Fermi sea alters the spectral distribution of …

Properties Model For Aqueous Sodium Chloride Solutions Near The Critical Point Of Water, Bing Liu Oct 2005

Properties Model For Aqueous Sodium Chloride Solutions Near The Critical Point Of Water, Bing Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional excess Gibbs energy models in terms of temperature, pressure, and concentration become progressively less effective in describing the thermodynamics of aqueous solutions at temperatures above 300 ¢ªC, and are totally inadequate in the critical region of water. This deficiency is due to the strong ion association and the large property fluctuations (such as density) with small variations in pressure, temperature, and solute concentration around the critical point of water. In this work, a speciation-based model has been developed to describe the thermodynamic properties of aqueous sodium chloride solutions in the critical region of water. The anomalous fluctuation problem is …

Population Intervention Models In Causal Inference, Alan E. Hubbard, Mark J. Van Der Laan Oct 2005

Population Intervention Models In Causal Inference, Alan E. Hubbard, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Marginal structural models (MSM) provide a powerful tool for estimating the causal effect of a] treatment variable or risk variable on the distribution of a disease in a population. These models, as originally introduced by Robins (e.g., Robins (2000a), Robins (2000b), van der Laan and Robins (2002)), model the marginal distributions of treatment-specific counterfactual outcomes, possibly conditional on a subset of the baseline covariates, and its dependence on treatment. Marginal structural models are particularly useful in the context of longitudinal data structures, in which each subject's treatment and covariate history are measured over time, and an outcome is recorded at …

Additive Hazards Models With Latent Treatment Effectiveness Lag Time, Ying Qing Chen, Charles A. Rohde, Mei-Cheng Wang Oct 2005

Additive Hazards Models With Latent Treatment Effectiveness Lag Time, Ying Qing Chen, Charles A. Rohde, Mei-Cheng Wang

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In many clinical trials to evaluate treatment efficacy, it is believed that there may exist latent treatment effectiveness lag times after which medical procedure or chemical compound would be in full effect. In this article, semiparametric regression models are proposed and studied to estimate the treatment effect accounting for such latent lag times. The new models take advantage of the invariance property of the additive hazards model in marginalizing over random effects, so parameters in the models are easy to be estimated and interpreted, while the flexibility without specifying baseline hazard function is kept. Monte Carlo simulation studies demonstrate the …
