This Is What I Meant When I Told You, Ryan David O'Malley
This Is What I Meant When I Told You, Ryan David O'Malley
LSU Master's Theses
THIS IS WHAT I MEANT WHEN I TOLD YOU is a quest to visually decipher the complexities of "self." The goal is to form a relationship of honesty between my mind and my hand, the art and the viewer. The work investigates reoccurring ideas, threaded through each day, in order to create narratives based on the immediacy of emotion, and the struggle between self-realization and uncertainty. Or as one commented during my show, "A celebration of the dark side of life."
Revision Of Pocadius Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), Andrew R. Cline
Revision Of Pocadius Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), Andrew R. Cline
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A revision of Pocadius Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) was completed. A total of 46 species were (re)described, including 25 new species, a key to species constructed, and phylogenetic analysis performed. Taxonomic changes, including nomenclatural emendations, reinstatement of species, and description of new taxa, within this dissertation do not constitute formal changes as defined by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Illustrations of the genitalia, key characters, and dorsal habitus of species are provided. The phylogeny demonstrates a monophyletic Pocadius. The phylogeny suggests a Palearctic origin of the genus with subsequent speciation into the Old World tropics and New World. Host specialization …
Characterization Of Aged Polymer Modified Asphalt Cements For Recycling Purposes, Codrin Daranga
Characterization Of Aged Polymer Modified Asphalt Cements For Recycling Purposes, Codrin Daranga
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Since polymer modified asphalt cement (PMAC) has been employed for a decade, the lifetime and wear on some of these pavements is reaching a stage where resurfacing is necessary. This research focuses on the characterization of aged polymer modified asphalt cements (PMAC) to evaluate their potential for recycling. A styrene-butadiene-styrene tri-block (SBS) polymer modified asphalt cement was selected and characterized using standard asphalt binder qualification techniques, i.e., the Superpave PG protocol. We developed a procedure to characterize the relative concentration of polymer in asphalt cements by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Infrared spectrographic, thermogravimetric and rheological techniques were used to identify …
Medical Image Enhancement, Alina Monica Trifas
Medical Image Enhancement, Alina Monica Trifas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Each image acquired from a medical imaging system is often part of a two-dimensional (2-D) image set whose total presents a three-dimensional (3-D) object for diagnosis. Unfortunately, sometimes these images are of poor quality. These distortions cause an inadequate object-of-interest presentation, which can result in inaccurate image analysis. Blurring is considered a serious problem. Therefore, “deblurring” an image to obtain better quality is an important issue in medical image processing. In our research, the image is initially decomposed. Contrast improvement is achieved by modifying the coefficients obtained from the decomposed image. Small coefficient values represent subtle details and are amplified …
Voluntary Exercise In The C57b1/6j Mouse: Phenotypic Effects Of Varying Dietary Fat Levels And Hippocampal Gene Expression Differences Between High-Level And Low-Level Exercisers, Leslie Debardeleben Mclaughlin
Voluntary Exercise In The C57b1/6j Mouse: Phenotypic Effects Of Varying Dietary Fat Levels And Hippocampal Gene Expression Differences Between High-Level And Low-Level Exercisers, Leslie Debardeleben Mclaughlin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The drive to exercise voluntarily likely results from complex interactions between genes in many organ systems and various psychological parameters, such as motivation and the perception of fatigue. Reproducible variations in exercise intensity and duration are well established in laboratory rodents, but the genes responsible remain largely unknown. Also, to date, studies addressing the adaptive changes to exercise that might prevent dietary-induced obesity have focused primarily on energy intake and nutrient oxidation/partitioning, as opposed to genetics. We hypothesize that increased voluntary physical activity may be a normal mechanism in certain rodent strains to deter dietary-induced obesity and that in an …
Restoration, Religion, And Revenge, Heather Thornton
Restoration, Religion, And Revenge, Heather Thornton
LSU Master's Theses
The subject of this thesis is religious dissent in Restoration England. The government of Charles II and the reinstated Church of England both had programs on how to deal with the problem of religious nonconformity. This project presents the punitive legislation supported by king, parliament, and church to stamp out dissent. These programs were unable to sway the beliefs of committed nonconformists who gave testimony to the strength of their beliefs by facing persecution and imprisonment.
Cognitive Memory Effects On Non-Linear Video-Based Learning, Katherine Renee Comeaux
Cognitive Memory Effects On Non-Linear Video-Based Learning, Katherine Renee Comeaux
LSU Master's Theses
During an informative learning process, information, material, facts and ideas are typically conveyed in a linear arrangement. Individuals are frequently distracted during this process with their attention being diverted to an interruption (Internet, phone call, etc). When presented with any new information, the mind evolves through problem solving and evaluation procedures. The way in which that information is processed and perceived depends on: (a) original presentation (b) examination of material and (c) an individualistic measurement of success. However, when faced with an interruption, the person is forced to deal with non-linear arrangement of information. This research investigates nonlinear presentation or …
Laterally Movable Gate Field Effect Transistor (Lmgfet) For Microsensor And Microactuator Applications, In-Hyouk Song
Laterally Movable Gate Field Effect Transistor (Lmgfet) For Microsensor And Microactuator Applications, In-Hyouk Song
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Laterally Movable Gate Field Effect Transistor (LMGFET) invented at LSU as a microactuator is the subject of study in this research. The gate moving in lateral direction in a LMGFET changes channel width but keeps the channel length and the gap between the metal gate and the gate oxide constant. LMGFET offers linear change in drain current with gate motion and a large displacement range. This research is the first demonstration of LMGFET. In this dissertation, a post-IC LIGA-like process for LMGFET microstructure fabrication has been developed that is compatible with monolithic integration with CMOS circuitry. A two-mask post-IC process …
Teaching The Progressive Era Through The Life And Accomplishments Of Jane Addams, Kacy J. Taylor
Teaching The Progressive Era Through The Life And Accomplishments Of Jane Addams, Kacy J. Taylor
LSU Master's Theses
Because of standardized testing in Louisiana, the high school American history curriculum has been reduced to a long list of facts. Students no longer learn the story of American history – the people and events that have defined America as we know it. Instead, it is presented to them in fragmented pieces. Teachers move so quickly from subject to subject that they fail to explain the origin and transformation of ideas. This paper proposes teaching a period of history through the life of an important historical figure, in this case, Jane Addams. Through the life of Jane Addams, students can …
Master Planning Communities With Wildlife In Mind, Helen A. Peebles
Master Planning Communities With Wildlife In Mind, Helen A. Peebles
LSU Master's Theses
Master-planned communities can be designed for the protection of wildlife while providing an aesthetically pleasing, eco-friendly, and affordable community for people. This study was conceived from a background of academic studies in plant biology, forestry, and landscape architecture, and a desire to rescue wildlife habitat from the encroachment of urban sprawl. A variety of books and periodicals were consulted, along with a few web sites. The primary threats to wildlife habitat are habitat fragmentation, pollution, and exotic invasive species of plants, animals, insects, and diseases. Many aspects of planning are addressed, including wildlife corridors, site selection, connecting habitat patches, and …

Adventures Of A Former Girlfriend: A Novel, Colleen Helen Fava
LSU Master's Theses
This is a novel about a young woman trying to redefine herself after years of defining herself through her relationships with other people, most specifically her boyfriends, but also her family. The heroine faces many challenges: the end of a long-term relationship, the illness of her niece, complications with her best friends, and a revelation about her parent's relationship. These ordinary obstacles of everyday living will propel the main character into a confrontation with her perception of herself and the world around her.
The Psychosocial Vulnerability Model Of Hostility As A Predictor Of Coronary Heart Disease, Karen Grothe
The Psychosocial Vulnerability Model Of Hostility As A Predictor Of Coronary Heart Disease, Karen Grothe
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the number one killer for both men and women in the United States today. African Americans are particularly at risk, due to higher prevalence rates and mortality related to CHD (American Heart Association, 2003). Less than half of the new cases of CHD can be predicted with known risk factors (tobacco use, obesity, hypertension), which suggests the possible influence of personality or additional behavioral factors. Hostility is a psychological variable that has been consistently related to health outcomes, particularly to CHD. While the exact mechanism linking hostility to health is currently unknown, a psychosocial vulnerability …
Mathematical Models For Estimating Volatile Chemical Emissions From Dredging Operations, Kenneth Alexander Fountain
Mathematical Models For Estimating Volatile Chemical Emissions From Dredging Operations, Kenneth Alexander Fountain
LSU Master's Theses
Dredging operations have been a common remediation for contaminated sediment in an effort to reduce the harmful impact on the environment. The objective of this research was to create models used for estimating chemical release to air from remediating the Indiana Harbor and Canal (IHC) as three separate dredging operations; the Dredge Site, Exposed DM CDF, and Ponded CDF. The evaporative flux estimations are based on a two-resistance mass transport path inclusive of both the molecular diffusion in porous media and interfacial airside mass transport resistances. Several chemodynamic algorithms were used in calculating key transport parameters. Laboratory tests were performed …

Naturally-Derived Porphyrin And Chlorin Photosensitizers For Photodynamic Therapy, Jodie Angela Hargus
Naturally-Derived Porphyrin And Chlorin Photosensitizers For Photodynamic Therapy, Jodie Angela Hargus
LSU Master's Theses
In oncologic applications of photodynamic therapy (PDT), the discriminating localization of porphyrin-type compounds in solid tumors is exploited for the selective ablation of neoplastic tissue with minimal destruction and irritation to normal tissue. PDT is a locoregional, binary cancer therapy in which a photosensitizer—light-activated drug—absorbs light of an appropriate wavelength and excites to the singlet state. This photosensitizer in the excited singlet state can undergo an internal transition to the excited triplet state, a relatively long-lived and high-energy species that transfers its excess energy to molecular oxygen. Molecular oxygen subsequently excites from the stable triplet state to the highly reactive …
Mammary Malfunction: A Comparison Of Breastfeeding And Bottlefeeding Product Ads With Magazine Article Content, Angela Broussard Hyderkhan
Mammary Malfunction: A Comparison Of Breastfeeding And Bottlefeeding Product Ads With Magazine Article Content, Angela Broussard Hyderkhan
LSU Master's Theses
Breastfeeding is a pressing social issue in terms of women’s equality, preventative healthcare, and the preservation of a valuable natural resource. Future progress in breastfeeding advocacy will depend on an accurate investigation into the current situation. In this study, three women’s prenatal magazines (American Baby, ePregnancy, and Parenting) are analyzed via content analysis for one calendar year, looking specifically at infant formula-related product advertisements, breastfeeding-related product advertisements and variations of the mother’s role in infant feeding. The content of breastfeeding-related magazine articles also is analyzed within the context of the advertisements. This sample of media appears to have evolved away …
Une Société Nouvelle: The Decline Of The Gaullist Party And France's Move To The Left, Neal A. Novak
Une Société Nouvelle: The Decline Of The Gaullist Party And France's Move To The Left, Neal A. Novak
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis is concerned with French politics in the thirteen years after 1968. After the wave of street demonstrations, seizure of schools, and worker sit-ins that beset the country in May of that year, many people in France became convinced of the need to alter the political status quo. In the years that followed, the country’s largest and most dominant political grouping, the Gaullist party, experienced a dramatic loss of electoral support. Between 1968 and 1981, the Gaullists lost control of the National Assembly, the premiership, and the presidency. By May 1981, France’s Fifth Republic was governed by a leftist …
Restoration Success Of Backfilling Canals In Coastal Louisiana Marshes, Joseph Baustian
Restoration Success Of Backfilling Canals In Coastal Louisiana Marshes, Joseph Baustian
LSU Master's Theses
The need for effective marsh restoration techniques in Louisiana is a pressing issue as the state continues to lose coastal wetlands. Returning spoil banks to canals, known as "backfilling", is an attractive restoration option because it restores marsh, prevents future wetland loss, and is cost effective. The direct conversion of marsh to canals and spoil banks accounted for over 22% of Louisiana's wetland loss from 1930 to 1990, and the indirect losses associated with canal dredging are even larger. The restoration success of 30 canals, backfilled twenty years ago, was examined in this study and compared to restoration success shortly …
The Effect Of Age And Sex On The Growth Patterns Of Bovine Cell Lines, Jeho Shin
The Effect Of Age And Sex On The Growth Patterns Of Bovine Cell Lines, Jeho Shin
LSU Master's Theses
The influence of donor animal sex or age on in vitro bovine cell culture was evaluated to provide foundation information for the selection of donor tissue for nuclear transfer. Skin biopsies were taken from each of sixteen individuals including four bulls (B), four cows (C), four male calves (MC), four female calves (FC). At passage 2, cells from in vitro culture of cell lines were influenced not by gender but by age in the mean cell generation time (MGT). When evaluating familial lineage, comparison between related and unrelated groups showed that most comparisons do not show significant differences in lag …
Denitrification And Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Cultivated And Wetland Alluvial Soils, Sami Ullah
Denitrification And Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Cultivated And Wetland Alluvial Soils, Sami Ullah
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Agricultural development in the Mississippi River Basin has contributed to an 3-fold increase in NO3 loading of the river. Increased NO3 loading is a primary cause of eutrophication in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Identification of best management practices (BMPs) to reduce NO3 loss and wetlands restoration to remove NO3 through denitrification are critically needed. The objectives of this research were to determine factors controlling denitrification potential of different landscape units in an agricultural watershed and quantify the effects of BMPs and organic C amendments on denitrification rates of cultivated lands and restored forested wetlands. N2O, CH4 and CO2 emissions …
Pah And Pcb Distribution In Sediment Fractions And Sorptive Phases, Trudy J. Estes
Pah And Pcb Distribution In Sediment Fractions And Sorptive Phases, Trudy J. Estes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Contaminant distribution is integral to environmental evaluations of contaminated sediment on every level. The technical and economic feasibility of treatment or beneficial use is a function of the accessibility or separability of the contaminants within the sediment. The magnitude of release to the environment during dredging and disposal is dependent upon the partitioning behavior of the contaminants. Yet, little attention has been paid to contaminant distribution in the fine sediment fractions. Further, conventional distribution coefficients provide little information regarding the relative contaminant loading of each of the sorptive phases. Bioavailability of contaminants in oil and grease, soot and organic carbon, …
Advanced Grid Stiffened Composite Structures, Dinesh Maricherla

LSU Master's Theses
In this study Advanced Grid Stiffened (AGS) composite structures are developed and analyzed for their mechanical properties. It is widely known that these structures possess light weight, high strength, and inherent impact resistance. Because of the advantages mentioned above, the AGS composite structures find many applications in aerospace, ship building and construction industries. The purpose of this study is to manufacture AGS composite structures and analyze AGS composite structures as reinforcement members. A FEA model is also developed and validated with the test results. Parametric analysis is also conducted to investigate the effects of different design parameters on these structures. …
The Evolution Of Prezygotic Reproductive Isolation In The Drosophila Pseudoobscura Subgroup, Sheri Dixon Schully
The Evolution Of Prezygotic Reproductive Isolation In The Drosophila Pseudoobscura Subgroup, Sheri Dixon Schully
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Newly forming species that have differentiated in allopatry may evolve numerous barriers that prevent the interbreeding when they come back into contact with each other. The objective of this dissertation is to evaluate some mechanisms of prezygotic reproductive isolation in the D. pseudoobscura subgroup. I begin by evaluating how the evolution of female preferences and male sexual characters lead to reinforcement between Drosophila pseudoobscura and its congener D. persimils. In particular, I will evaluate two alternative hypotheses; Preference Evolution and Discrimination Enhancement, to determine how selection reduces hybridization between these sister species. Both hypotheses predict a reduction in the overlap …
An Analysis Of Human Alu Element Lineages, Anthony Bronson Carter
An Analysis Of Human Alu Element Lineages, Anthony Bronson Carter
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Alu Ya and Yb-lineages are distinct groups of Short INterspersed Elements (SINEs) found exclusively in primates. These lineages are comprised of several distinct subfamilies, which contain elements that are evolutionarily-related because they share common diagnostic mutations. Some of these Alu subfamilies are still actively mobilizing in the human genome. We have recovered 4333 Ya and Yb-lineage elements that reside in the human genome draft sequence and focused our analyses on the 4051 autosomal Alu elements. A total of 2672 autosomal loci were subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays that allow analysis of individual elements for insertion presence and …
Ternary Logic To Binary Bit Conversion Using Multiple Input Floating Gate Mosfets In 0.5 Micron N-Well Cmos Technology, Sowmya Subramanian
Ternary Logic To Binary Bit Conversion Using Multiple Input Floating Gate Mosfets In 0.5 Micron N-Well Cmos Technology, Sowmya Subramanian
LSU Master's Theses
In the present work, a CMOS ternary to binary bit conversion technique has been proposed using multiple input floating gate MOSFETs. The proposed circuit has been implemented in 0.5 µm n-well CMOS technology. The ternary input signals of {-1, 0, +1} are represented as -3 V, 0 V and +3 V, respectively. The ternary input is given as a combination of any two of the three voltage levels and the 4-bit binary output is generated in which the left most bit is sign bit (SB) followed by most significant bit (MSB), second significant bit (SSB) and the least significant bit …
The Role Of Perturbation On Biochemical Systems: Salt, Ph, And Microgravity Effects On Protein-Ligand And Small Molecule Interactions, Gregory S. Thompson
The Role Of Perturbation On Biochemical Systems: Salt, Ph, And Microgravity Effects On Protein-Ligand And Small Molecule Interactions, Gregory S. Thompson
LSU Master's Theses
DNA binding by the type I DNA polymerases from Escherichia coli (Klenow) and Thermus aquaticus (Klentaq) has been examined under varying ionic conditions. Klenow and Klentaq both show increased affinity for DNA substrate in the presence of KAcetate over KCl. Ionic linkage relationships were determined for Klenow and Klentaq in KAcetate. Klenow and Klentaq DNA binding show similar ion releases in KAcetate and KCl (~4-5 ions in Klenow, and ~3-4 ions in Klentaq). Interestingly, Klenow and Klentaq exhibit differential ion release in KGlutamate (~4-5 ions in Klentaq and ~2 ions in Klenow). DNA structure dependence of binding was examined for …
Reciprocal Peer Tutoring And Treatment Integrity Of Elementary School Students, Brian M. Esteve
Reciprocal Peer Tutoring And Treatment Integrity Of Elementary School Students, Brian M. Esteve
LSU Master's Theses
Academic concerns are the most common reason students are referred for special services in schools. This obviously leads to the necessity for schools to have secondary prevention services in place to address the needs of students who are struggling. Peer tutoring, in its various forms, has been well documented as an effective and inexpensive intervention for all academic areas. Despite the promise of peer tutoring, research evidence suggests that teachers may not consistently carry out their roles in the peer tutoring process with sufficient accuracy to ensure positive outcomes. One possible solution to this problem is to have a consultant …
Temporal Trends In Tchula Period Pottery In Louisiana, Steven Ray Fullen
Temporal Trends In Tchula Period Pottery In Louisiana, Steven Ray Fullen
LSU Master's Theses
Tchula period pottery (Tchefuncte culture) in Louisiana is characterized by highly contorted and laminated pastes. These diagnostic traits have led investigators to suggest hypotheses concerning manufacturing techniques, but there has been relatively little focus on temporal trends associated with these characteristics. The first step in redressing this problem was to identify a site likely to contain archaeological assemblages that would span the Tchula period. Excavations began at the Sarah Peralta site (16EBR67) in the fall of 2001 and were concluded in the spring of 2002. Artifacts from this site were characterized according to standard identification procedures. A secondary site, the …
Cognitive Adaptation's Implication On Diabetic Adherence, Martin Ancona
Cognitive Adaptation's Implication On Diabetic Adherence, Martin Ancona
LSU Master's Theses
Diabetes, affecting more than 18 million people in the United States, is an epidemic problem. The illness is usually progressive, leading to neuropathy, blindness, and limb amputation. The most common type of the illness, Type 2 diabetes, is usually controllable through a strict combination of diet, exercise, and medication. However, non-compliance, rather than compliance, to prescribed diabetes regimens is the norm. Although past research has uncovered many of the reason that diabetics may fail to adhere to their regimen, the whole puzzle has not yet been solved. This study looked at the Cognitive Adaptation Theory in relation to diabetic adherence. …
Offshore Oil And Gas Platforms As Stepping Stones For Expansion Of Coral Communities: A Molecular Genetic Analysis, Amy D. Atchison
Offshore Oil And Gas Platforms As Stepping Stones For Expansion Of Coral Communities: A Molecular Genetic Analysis, Amy D. Atchison
LSU Master's Theses
The northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is one of the most productive oil and gas exploration areas in the world, currently containing approximately 3,800 offshore platforms. These platforms serve as artificial reefs in shallow water, which until their introduction was nearly devoid of shallow hard substrata. The question is raised whether this newly available substrate could help expand coral populations in the GOM. In this study, I examined adult scleractinian corals on oil and gas platforms in the northern GOM, in the vicinity of the Flower Garden Banks (FGB; approximately 180 km SE of Galveston, Texas) and attempted to determine …
