Nonparametric Pooling And Testing Of Preference Ratings For Full-Profile Conjoint Analysis Experiments, Rosa Arboretti G., Marco Marozzi, Luigi Salmaso Nov 2005

Nonparametric Pooling And Testing Of Preference Ratings For Full-Profile Conjoint Analysis Experiments, Rosa Arboretti G., Marco Marozzi, Luigi Salmaso

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The problem of pooling customer preference ratings within a conjoint analysis experiment has been addressed. A method based on the nonparametric combination of rankings has been proposed to compete with the usual method based on the arithmetic mean. This method is nonparametric with respect to the underlying dependence structure and so no dependence model must be assumed. The two methods have been compared using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and related test. Moreover, a further nonparametric testing method has been considered and proposed; this method takes both correlation and distance between ranks into account. By means of a simulation study it …

Jmasm20: Exact Permutation Critical Values For The Kruskal-Wallis One-Way Anova, Justice I. Odiase, Sunday M. Ogbonmwan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The exhaustive enumeration of all the permutations of the observations in an experiment is the only possible way of truly constructing exact tests of significance. The permutation paradigm requires no distributional assumptions and works well with values that are normal, almost normal and non-normally distributed. The Kruskal-Wallis test does not require the assumptions that the samples are from normal populations and that the samples have the same standard deviation. In this article, the exact permutation distribution of the Kruskal-Wallis test statistic is generated empirically by actually obtaining all the distinct permutations of an experiment. The tables of exact critical values …

Statistical Model And Estimation Of The Optimum Price For A Chain Of Price Setting Firms, Chengjie Xiong, Kejun Zhu Nov 2005

Statistical Model And Estimation Of The Optimum Price For A Chain Of Price Setting Firms, Chengjie Xiong, Kejun Zhu

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A stochastic approach is used to model the economics of a chain of price setting firms. It is assumed that these firms have fixed capacities in their products, but random demands for their products. The optimum price, the optimum revenue, and the expected marginal revenue at a given price are investigated. The method of maximum likelihood is used to provide both point and confidence interval estimates. The coverage probabilities of confidence interval estimates based on a simulation study are presented.

The Influence Of Reliability On Four Rules For Determining The Number Of Components To Retain, Gibbs Y. Kanyongo Nov 2005

The Influence Of Reliability On Four Rules For Determining The Number Of Components To Retain, Gibbs Y. Kanyongo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Imperfectly reliable scores impact the performance of factor analytic procedures. A series of Monte Carlo studies was conducted to generate scores with known component structure from population matrices with varying levels of reliability. The scores were submitted to four procedures: Kaiser rule, scree plot, parallel analysis, and modified Horn’s parallel analysis to find if each procedure accurately determines the number of components at the different reliability levels. The performance of each procedure was judged by the percentage of the number of times that the procedure was correct and the mean components that each procedure extracted in each cell. Generally, the …

Corrections For Type I Error In Social Science Research: A Disconnect Between Theory And Practice, Kenneth Lachlan, Patric R. Spence Nov 2005

Corrections For Type I Error In Social Science Research: A Disconnect Between Theory And Practice, Kenneth Lachlan, Patric R. Spence

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Type I errors are a common problem in factorial ANOVA and ANOVA based analyses. Despite decades of literature offering solutions to the Type I error problems associated with multiple significance tests, simple solutions such as Bonferroni corrections have been largely ignored by social scientists. To examine this discontinuity between theory and practice, a content analysis was performed on 5 flagship social science journals. Results indicate that corrections for Type I error are seldom utilized, even in designs so complicated as to almost guarantee erroneous rejection of null hypotheses.

Model Selection Of Meat Demand System Using The Rotterdam Model And The Almost Ideal Demand System (Aids), Maria Divina S. Paraguas, Anton Abdulbasah Kamil

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Aggregated time series data for differentiated meat products namely, beef, pork, poultry, and mutton were used to estimate and analyze Malaysian market demand for meats. The study aimed to select the most appropriate demand model between the equally popular Rotterdam model and the first difference Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) model by using a non-nested test. Both models were accepted, but further diagnostic tests revealed that the first difference LA/AIDS represents more appropriately the Malaysian market demand for meat than the Rotterdam model. Also, the elasticities from the first difference LA/AIDS were found to be more reliable than …

Downstream elements are a newly appreciated class of core promoter elements of RNA polymerase II-transcribed genes. The downstream core element (DCE) was discovered in the human β-globin promoter, and its sequence composition is distinct from that of the downstream promoter element (DPE). We show here that the DCE is a bona fide core promoter element present in a large number of promoters and with high incidence in promoters containing a TATA motif. Database analysis indicates that the DCE is found in diverse promoters, supporting its functional relevance in a variety of promoter contexts. The DCE consists of …

Development Of Biological Reference Conditions Of Wadeable Streams In The Major Ecoregions And Subecoregions Of Georgia, Duncan L. Hughes Nov 2005

Development Of Biological Reference Conditions Of Wadeable Streams In The Major Ecoregions And Subecoregions Of Georgia, Duncan L. Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

One bioassessment tool available to resource managers to indicate NPS impairment of wadeable streams and rivers are multi-metric invertebrate indices. Such indices are assembled from metrics in broad categories that represent different aspects of community structure and function (e.g. richness, composition, tolerance/intolerance, feeding group, and habit). Indices must incorporate suites of metrics that are ecologically relevant, quantifiable, non-redundant, and that best individually discriminate between reference sites and impaired sites. More than 240 wadeable streams in Georgia were sampled during the September thru February index period using RBP protocols during three successive sample seasons (1999-2003). Ecoregional reference (minimally impaired) sites, as …

W Production At Large Transverse Momentum At The Large Hadron Collider, Richard J. Gonsalves, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Agustín Sabio Vera Nov 2005

W Production At Large Transverse Momentum At The Large Hadron Collider, Richard J. Gonsalves, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Agustín Sabio Vera

Faculty Articles

We study the production of W bosons at large transverse momentum in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We calculate the complete next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to the differential cross section. We find that the NLO corrections provide a large increase to the cross section but, surprisingly, do not reduce the scale dependence relative to leading order (LO). We also calculate next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) soft-gluon corrections and find that, although they are small, they significantly reduce the scale dependence thus providing a more stable theoretical prediction.

Modeling Fuzzy Rules With Description Logics, Sudhir Agarwal, Pascal Hitzler Nov 2005

Modeling Fuzzy Rules With Description Logics, Sudhir Agarwal, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

In real application scenarios, input data and knowledge is often vague. Likewise, it is often the case that exact reasoning over data is impossible due to complex dependencies between input data and target outputs. For practical applications, however, good approximations often suffice, and efficient calculation of an approximate answer is often preferable over complex processing which may take a long time to come up with an exact answer. Fuzzy logic supports both features by providing fuzzy membership functions and fuzzy IF-THEN rule bases. In this paper, we show how fuzzy membership functions and fuzzy rules can be modeled by means …

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

GPS observations in south Iceland between 1994 and 2003 are compared with two-dimensional elastic half-space and viscoelastic coupling models for two parallel rift zones, representing the Western and Eastern volcanic zones (WVZ, EVZ). GPS data from the Hreppar block, between the WVZ and EVZ, fit a rigid block model within uncertainties. Spreading rates across the WVZ increase from 2.6 ± 0.9 mm/yr in the northeast to 7.0 ± 0.4 mm/yr in the southwest. Conversely, spreading rates in the EVZ decrease from 19.0 ± 2.0 mm/yr in the northeast to 11.0 ± 0.8 mm/yr in the southwest, the direction of ridge …

The H Ii Region/Pdr Connection: Self-Consistent Calculations Of Physical Conditions In Star-Forming Regions, Nicholas Paul Abel, Gary J. Ferland, G. Shaw, Peter A. M. Van Hoof Nov 2005

The H Ii Region/Pdr Connection: Self-Consistent Calculations Of Physical Conditions In Star-Forming Regions, Nicholas Paul Abel, Gary J. Ferland, G. Shaw, Peter A. M. Van Hoof

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have performed a series of calculations designed to reproduce infrared diagnostics used to determine physical conditions in star-forming regions. We self-consistently calculate the thermal and chemical structure of an H II region and photodissociation region (PDR) that are in pressure equilibrium. This differs from previous work, which used separate calculations for each gas phase. Our calculations span a wide range of stellar temperatures, gas densities, and ionization parameters. We describe improvements made to the spectral synthesis code Cloudy that made these calculations possible. These include the addition of a molecular network with ~1000 reactions involving 68 molecular species and …

Laser-Dressed Vacuum Polarization In A Coulomb Field, A. I. Milstein, Ivan S. Terekhov, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Christoph H. Keitel Nov 2005

Laser-Dressed Vacuum Polarization In A Coulomb Field, A. I. Milstein, Ivan S. Terekhov, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Christoph H. Keitel

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate quantum electrodynamic effects under the influence of an external, time-dependent electromagnetic field, which mediates dynamic modifications of the radiative corrections. Specifically, we consider the quantum electrodynamic vacuum-polarization tensor under the influence of two external background fields: a strong laser field and a nuclear Coulomb field. We calculate the charge and current densities induced by a nuclear Coulomb field in the presence of a laser field. We find the corresponding induced scalar and vector potentials. The induced potential, in first-order perturbation theory, leads to a correction to atomic energy levels. The external laser field breaks the rotational symmetry of …

The Measurement Of Implicit Motives In Three Cultures: Power And Affiliation In Cameroon, Costa Rica, And Germany, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis, Wolfgang Friedlmeier, Holger Busch, Domingo Campos

Peer Reviewed Articles

This article examines methodological issues related to the measurement of implicit motives in culturally divergent samples. Implicit motives are seen as basic needs shared by all human beings. However, cross-cultural comparisons are very restricted because many cross-cultural studies on implicit motives with non- Western cultures developed and discussed culture-inherent stimuli. The aim of the study here was to search for a culture-independent set of picture stimuli measuring two basic motives (affiliation and power motive) in three different cultures. Two pretests and one main study were carried out in Cameroon, Costa Rica, and Germany with student and non-student samples, respectively, and …

Rate Response Assessment From Various Granular Vrt Applicators, John P. Fulton, Scott A. Shearer, Stephen F. Higgins, Matthew J. Darr, Timothy S. Stombaugh

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Variable-rate technology (VRT) adds complexity to application equipment, thereby confounding the assessment of applicator performance. The intent of this investigation was to assess the rate response of various VRT granular applicators: two spinner spreaders (A and B), and two pneumatic applicators (C and D). Variable-rate (VR) tests were conducted to quantify the rate response characteristics (delay and transition times) for the applicators. A sigmoidal function was used to model the rate response for five of the six tests. Applicator A exhibited a linear response during decreasing rate changes. Results indicated that only applicator B demonstrated consistent delay and transition times, …

Current State Of Co-Employee Immunity Under Workers' Compensation Law, The, Michael S. Kruse Nov 2005

Current State Of Co-Employee Immunity Under Workers' Compensation Law, The, Michael S. Kruse

Missouri Law Review

The exclusivity provision of Missouri's Workers' Compensation Act ("the Act") essentially constitutes a statutory mandated quid-pro-quo agreement amongst employees and their employers. Under the terms of the Act, employers incur the burden of no-fault liability for workplace injuries. The Act states that "[e]very employer ... shall be liable, irrespective of negligence, to furnish compensation . . . for personal injury or death of the employee by accident arising out of and in the course of [his] employment." In exchange for employers incurring this burden, the Act statutorily abrogates any common law right of action the employee may hold against the …

Burger-Blackmun Relationship: Lessons For Collegiality From The Blackmun Papers, The, Duane Benton, Barrett J. Vahle

Missouri Law Review

The [Blackmun] Papers have extensive correspondence, diaries, and other documents illuminating the relationship between Blackmun and Burger. The general thesis presented by Woodward & Amrstrong, Lewis, Greenhouse, Totenberg, and Munford is accurate. This article examines the Papers in detail, against the backdrop of the literature on collegiality. We find a very complex relationship: in the 1950s and 1960s, Burger provided a vital Washington connection for, and political clout to, Blackmun. During those two decades, Blackmun was a key link back to Minnesota, and a solic supporter for Burger. When the two became colleagues on the Supreme Court in 1970, their …

Introducing Discipline: Anthropology And Human Rights Administrations, Iris Jean-Klein, Annelise Riles Nov 2005

Introducing Discipline: Anthropology And Human Rights Administrations, Iris Jean-Klein, Annelise Riles

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Anthropologists engage human rights administrations with an implicit promise that our discipline has something unique to offer. The articles in this special issue turn questions about relevance and care so often heard in the context of debates about human rights outside in. They focus not on how anthropology can contribute to human rights activities, but on what anthropological encounters with human rights contribute to the development of our discipline. They ask, how exactly do we render the subject relevant to anthropology? Reflecting on some ways anthropologists in this field have dispensed care for their subjects, the authors highlight two modalities …

Overlooked In The Tort Reform Debate: The Growth Of Erroneous Removal, Theodore Eisenberg, Trevor W. Morrison Nov 2005

Overlooked In The Tort Reform Debate: The Growth Of Erroneous Removal, Theodore Eisenberg, Trevor W. Morrison

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Disputes over forum often center on whether a case should proceed in state or federal court. Removal to federal court can trigger a costly forum struggle. When a state case is removed to federal court only to be sent back to state court, the time and resources incurred in the detour are a toll on the judicial system and waste parties’ resources. We find erroneous removal to be an increasing problem. From 1993 to 2002, a period when state tort filings noticeably decreased, the number of removed diversity tort cases increased by about 10 percent to about 8,900 per year. …

Willful Judging Of Harry Blackmun, The, Gregory C. Sisk

Missouri Law Review

As an invited guest at a symposium in which a central place is given to examining the personal papers and judicial life of a jurist who is esteemed and even revered by many of those participating and attending, my playing of a negative note may sound discordant. Indeed, it may appear downright rude. Because my hosts assured me that the academic ideal of balanced perspectives and critical analysis animated this symposium, and that they would expect nothing less than such a countervailing viewpoint from me, I feel less churlish than otherwise I might.

Why Do Supreme Court Justices Succeed Or Fail - Harry Blackmun As An Example, Lawrence S. Wrightsman, Justin R. La Mort

Missouri Law Review

At present, 108 Justices have served on the United States Supreme Court. Some have clearly been successes as judges, while a few have clearly not, and a large number are cast into that middle, "satisfactory" or "average," category. The purpose of this paper is to propose, examine, and evaluate specific factors as determinants of judicial success, and then to consider Justice Harry Blackmun's place on a continuum of successes and failures. The paper is divided into three sections. First, it reviews several ideal qualities and examines the results of several surveys of experts, which classify the Justices into categories based …
