Factors That Influence Mammography Use Of Community Health Workers, Cynthia M. Kratzke Jan 2005

Factors That Influence Mammography Use Of Community Health Workers, Cynthia M. Kratzke

Health Services Research Dissertations

Community health worker (CHW) interventions promote early detection of breast cancer and mammography use to help eliminate health disparities for minority and low-income women. Data trends show lower mammography use among this population although CHW interventions have been shown to promote mammography use. However, CHW interventions have not been tested sufficiently to examine the factors that influence mammography use of CHWs.

This cross-sectional study examined the factors that influence mammography use of CHWs and the relationship of self-efficacy, social norms, and mammography use of CHWs. The PRECEDE model served as the framework combining social factors, beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and accessibility …

Technology Competition And Optimal Investment Timing: A Real Options Perspective, Robert J. Kauffman, X. Li Jan 2005

Technology Competition And Optimal Investment Timing: A Real Options Perspective, Robert J. Kauffman, X. Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Companies often choose to defer irreversible investments to maintain valuable managerial flexibility in an uncertain world. For some technology-intensive projects, technology uncertainty plays a dominant role in affecting investment timing. This article analyzes the investment timing strategy for a firm that is deciding about whether to adopt one or the other of two incompatible and competing technologies. We develop a continuous-time stochastic model that aids in the determination of optimal timing for managerial adoption within the framework of real options theory. The model captures the elements of the decision-making process in such a way so as to provide managerial guidance in …

The Effects Of Shilling On Final Bid Prices In Online Auctions, Robert J. Kauffman, Charles A. Wood Jan 2005

The Effects Of Shilling On Final Bid Prices In Online Auctions, Robert J. Kauffman, Charles A. Wood

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An increasing number of reports of online auction fraud are of growing concern to auction operators and participants. In this research, we discuss reserve price shilling, where a bidder shills in order to avoid paying auction house fees, rather than to drive up the price of the final bid. We examine the effect that premium bids have upon the final selling price, since they are linked with reserve price shill bids. We use 10,260 eBay auctions during April 2001, and identify 919 auctions involving 322 sellers and 1583 bidders involved in concurrent auctions for the exact same item. We find …

Tuning In (Or Out) The Big Voice Of Arundhati Roy Following The God Of Small Things, Geoffrey Kain Jan 2005

Tuning In (Or Out) The Big Voice Of Arundhati Roy Following The God Of Small Things, Geoffrey Kain

Publications

Arundhati Roy made a great splash in 1997 with publication of The God of Small Things, receiving the Brooker Prize for her first and to date only novel and thereby stepping suddenly and quite flamboyantly into the spotlight of international literary notoriety. Not surprisingly, most who have read her highly acclaimed novel have waited for another novel to follow in its wake. After nine years, a second novel has not yet followed. Roy has said she will write another novel when and if she feels ready and has a story that needs to be told, but some impatience among …

Consistency Management Among Replicas In Peer-To-Peer Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Takahiro Hara Jan 2005

Consistency Management Among Replicas In Peer-To-Peer Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Takahiro Hara

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent advances in wireless communication along with peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm have led to increasing interest in P2P mobile ad hoc networks. In this paper, we assume an environment where each mobile peer accesses data items held by other peers which are connected by a mobile ad hoc network. Since peers' mobility causes frequent network partitions, replicas of a data item may be inconsistent due to write operations performed by mobile peers. In such an environment, the global consistency of data items is not desirable by many applications. Thus, new consistency maintenance based on local conditions such as location and time …

Quality Management In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton Jan 2005

Quality Management In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton

All Books

Higher education institutions have traditionally vied for renown for quality education, with external measurements such as achievement levels of graduating students and later graduate success as two evidences of that quality. In some countries external monitoring of final examinations has provided a measuring rod of institutional success; in others, other performance indicators have been used. In more recent years, however, significant focus has shifted internationally not just to evidence of institutional outcomes, but the internal processes by which quality is assured. Coupled with this has been an increased emphasis on the more formative elements of achieving quality, not just in …

Strategic Planning In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton Jan 2005

Strategic Planning In Higher Education, Andrea Luxton

All Books

Texts on strategic planning are numerous, particularly in relation to the business sector, and higher education has often largely employed a business model in its own approaches to developing strategy. However, in more recent years writers have focused on the specific needs of the higher education environment in planning. This booklet seeks to capture the essence of the debates on strategy in planning, in order to provide a framework for higher education planning that will meet the best standards of practice internationally.

Strengths And Resilience In Chinese Immigrant Families: An Initial Effort Of Inquiry, Yan Ruth Xia, Zhi George Zhou, Xiaolin Xie Jan 2005

Strengths And Resilience In Chinese Immigrant Families: An Initial Effort Of Inquiry, Yan Ruth Xia, Zhi George Zhou, Xiaolin Xie

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The landscape of American demography has changed dramatically since the middle of the 20th century. Research indicates that the number of immigrants to the United States will continue to increase rapidly over the next three decades (Day, 1996). As the immigrant population grows, so does the necessity for family researchers to build theories to describe and explain the experiences of the new immigrant families. The research that we present here is aimed at expanding the knowledge base in relation to the resilience of newcomers in the Midwest; this study involved the use of both qualitative (holistic) and quantitative (scientific) methods. …

Experimental Investigation Of Drilling Fluid Formulations And Processing Methods For A Riser Dilution Approach To Dual Density Drilling, John Shelton Jan 2005

Experimental Investigation Of Drilling Fluid Formulations And Processing Methods For A Riser Dilution Approach To Dual Density Drilling, John Shelton

LSU Master's Theses

Oil and natural gas resources in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico are important for the U.S. economy, but development is limited by high costs. Dual density drilling concepts that result in wellbore pressure gradients similar to the natural subsurface gradients can simplify well designs and reduce costs. Riser dilution may be an economical means of achieving such a system. This system would use a low density fluid to dilute the weighted wellbore fluid and give an intermediate density fluid in the riser. Two key concerns addressed in this study are whether a drilling fluid can be formulated that will suspend …

The Etoile Du Deseret: Portrait Of The French Mission, 1851-1852, Douglas James Geilman Jan 2005

The Etoile Du Deseret: Portrait Of The French Mission, 1851-1852, Douglas James Geilman

Theses and Dissertations

One of John Taylor's most significant achievements during his mission to France, 1849-1851, was the publication of a French-language Latter-day Saint periodical, the Etoile du Déséret. Appearing in twelve issues from May 1851 to December 1852, the Etoile served a variety of functions for the earliest missionaries and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France. A study of its historical context and of its contents allows readers a glimpse into the circumstances under which the missionaries labored and into the needs of the growing Church. Furthermore, the Etoile provides a vivid example of John …

Computer-Aided Diagnosis Tool For The Detection Of Cancerous Nodules In X-Ray Images, Pallavi Bomma Jan 2005

Computer-Aided Diagnosis Tool For The Detection Of Cancerous Nodules In X-Ray Images, Pallavi Bomma

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis involves development of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tool for the detection of cancerous nodules in X-ray images. Both cancerous and non-cancerous regions appear with little distinction on an X-ray image. For accurate detection of cancerous nodules, we need to differentiate the cancerous nodules from the non-cancerous. We developed an artificial neural network to differentiate them. Artificial neural networks (ANN) find a large application in the area of medical imaging. They work in a manner rather similar to the brain and have good decision making criteria when trained appropriately. We trained the neural network by the backpropagation algorithm and …

The Code Napoléon, Buried But Ruling In Latin America, M C. Mirow Jan 2005

The Code Napoléon, Buried But Ruling In Latin America, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

Following Maitland's famous observation on the place of the forms of action in English law at the beginning of the twentieth century, this essay argues that the Code Napoleon has had a similar effect on Latin American law. It examines various factors that have served to bury the Code and those that have served to continue its rule in Latin America. For Latin America, the author paraphrases Maitland to assert that the Code Napoleon we have buried, but it still rules us from its grave.

The Danish Interest Conference, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

On January 1, 1963 The American Evangelical Lutheran Church ceased to exist as a separate entity. The AELC was the new name that had been assumed by the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1954. Therefore, what really came to an end in 1963 was the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, which hereinafter shall be referred to simply as the Danish Church.

Unhappy Contracts: The Case Of Divorce Settlements, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2005

Unhappy Contracts: The Case Of Divorce Settlements, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

This paper examines a particular type of contracts that is, sadly, increasingly frequent: the agreements produced by divorcing couples. They are unhappy contracts, agreements produced as a necessary part of exit from what is now suboptimal marriage. They are virtually required by many states and are, in theory at least, closely monitored by courts since, when children are involved, they will be incorporated into court orders. What parties to unhappy contracts do is attempt to minimize losses, rather than maximize gain. How are contracts structured that will do this, and how does a difference in the size or power of the …

The "Lone Wolf" Amendment And The Future Of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Law, Patricia L. Bellia Jan 2005

The "Lone Wolf" Amendment And The Future Of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Law, Patricia L. Bellia

Journal Articles

In December 2004, Congress adopted an important change to the statutory framework authorizing domestic surveillance of foreign powers and their agents, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The change, directly prompted by the events of September 11, 2001, makes it easier for the government to conduct surveillance of so-called lone wolf terrorists - that is, terrorists who act in sympathy with the aims of an international terrorist group but not on its behalf, or terrorists whose link to an international terrorist group cannot be demonstrated. Although the logic of the lone wolf amendment at first seems quite compelling, the amendment …

Relocating Disorder, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2005

Relocating Disorder, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

Judicial challenges to order-maintenance policing apparently are leading some city officials to adapt the tools of property regulation to a task traditionally reserved for the police - the control of disorderly people. Examples of efforts to regulate disorder, ex ante, through land-management strategies include homeless campuses that centralize housing and social services, neighborhood exclusion zone policies that empower local officials to exclude disorderly individuals from struggling communities, and the selective targeting of inner-city neighborhoods for aggressive property inspections. These tactics employ different management techniques - some concentrate disorder and others disperse it - but they have same goal: to relocate …

Rights And The Need For Objective Moral Limits, Charles E. Rice Jan 2005

Rights And The Need For Objective Moral Limits, Charles E. Rice

Journal Articles

In this article, we will examine the natural law conception that rights are rooted in human nature, which nature itself is of divine origin through creation. We will compare this natural law concept to the premises and social consequences of the secular, relativist, and individualist approaches common to the jurisprudence of the Enlightenment. This article will offer the conclusion that only a grounding of right in the nature of persons as immortal beings created by God can offer moral and cultural security against the depersonalization characteristic of regimes premised on a relativist individualism.

In Search Of A Theory For Constitutional Comparativism, Roger P. Alford Jan 2005

In Search Of A Theory For Constitutional Comparativism, Roger P. Alford

Journal Articles

Constitutional comparativism - the notion that international and foreign material should be used to interpret the U.S. Constitution - is gaining currency. Yet proponents of this practice rarely offer a firm theoretical justification for the practice. This Article contends that constitutional comparativism should be examined from the perspective of constitutional theory. The use of comparative and international material must be deemed appropriate or inappropriate based on a particular judge's interpretive mode of constitutional analysis. The Article presents four classic constitutional theories - originalism, natural law, majoritarianism, and pragmatism - and addresses the propriety of constitutional comparativism under each theory. This …
