Nanoplankton Biodiversity In The Pettaquamscutt River Estuary, Rhode Island, Unites States, Sunshine Menezes Jan 2005

Nanoplankton Biodiversity In The Pettaquamscutt River Estuary, Rhode Island, Unites States, Sunshine Menezes

Open Access Dissertations

Biodiversity of the nanoplankton was investigated within the Pettaquamscutt River Estuary (PRE) in southern Rhode Island, U.S.A. through light and electron microscopy. Five stations were sampled along the salinity gradient of the estuary to determine spatial and temporal variation in the nanoplanktonic community. Salinity and nutrient data indicated that there were two distinct regions within the estuary, classified as the "lower river region" and the "upper river region". Nanoplankton always dominated the phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll a) in the upper river region, but not in the lower river. Live samples indicated that there is an abundant and diverse assemblage of …

Restructuring School: Improving K-8 Science Teaching And Learning In Schools Through Systematic Professional Development, Diana Catalina Siliezar

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of the study is to examine the effectiveness that a systematic, content specific professional development program has on K-8 teachers' attitudes, content preparedness, pedagogy preparedness, teacher efficacy, and their knowledge of standards and classroom practice. The Northeastern LSC program in this study is a project that uses inquiry-based, hands-on science kits that have been designed to help K-8 students comprehend science content and processes that are outlined by the various science standards such as the National Science Education Standards (NSES, 2001). Teachers were stratified according to the number of professional development hours they encountered and the types of …

Group Identity Effects On Social Influence, Adviye Tolunay Jan 2005

Group Identity Effects On Social Influence, Adviye Tolunay

Open Access Dissertations

This experiment investigated the effects of different group identities on social influence in a sample of 294 predominantly first-year college students. The primary aim of this study was to test whether forming social identities on different criteria along the trivial-important dimension of group definition has significantly different effect on individuals' conformity to their group's majority opinion in response to social dilemmas. The second aim of this study was to investigate whether conformity to group norms occurs in computer mediated contexts, in which a person does not know the identities of his or her group members and is not in face-to-face …

Recombinant Antimicrobials For Feed Based Delivery In Aquaculture, Tarquin Dorrington Jan 2005

Recombinant Antimicrobials For Feed Based Delivery In Aquaculture, Tarquin Dorrington

Open Access Dissertations

Two antimicrobial peptides of marine origin, tachyplesin from the horseshoe crab (Tachyplesus tridentatus) and pleurocidin from the winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus), were evaluated for potential use in feed-based delivery in oyster aquaculture. Tachyplesin, a beta sheet structure was more effective against a range of gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens, as well as against the protozoan oyster parasite Perkinsus marinus. In addition, tachyplesin's structure made it more resistant to the effects of proteases from the oyster and the parasite. The two peptides also had different effects on the host bacteria of the oyster digestive system, with tachyplesin selectively killing more gram-negatives and …

Reducing Risks From Natural Disasters In Rhode Island: A Case Study Of Local Hazard Mitigation Planning In North Kingstown, Bonnie M. Dixon Jan 2005

Reducing Risks From Natural Disasters In Rhode Island: A Case Study Of Local Hazard Mitigation Planning In North Kingstown, Bonnie M. Dixon

Open Access Master's Theses

The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 provided strengthened federal incentives for local hazard mitigation planning. In Rhode Island, this process is currently being carried out by each municipality with guidance from the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA). This analysis of the local hazard mitigation planning process in Rhode Island is based on the author's participation in hazard mitigation planning in North Kingstown, and a review of the scholarly literature.

Six points are identified on which Rhode Island's process could be improved: l) more use of specialized expertise, 2) continuous staffing of planning and implementation, 3) greater coordination between jurisdictions, …

Ninety students at the University of Rhode Island in the upper level Communication 381 Research Methods course participated in this study. The results indicate that significantly positive relationships exist among the dimensions of the two concepts. Limitations and directions for …

An Analysis Of The Thermal Decomposition Reactions Of Organic Electrolytes Used In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Christopher Lawrence Campion Jan 2005

An Analysis Of The Thermal Decomposition Reactions Of Organic Electrolytes Used In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Christopher Lawrence Campion

Open Access Dissertations

The thermal decomposition of LiPF6 in solution with carbonate solvents has been investigated. The thermal dissociation of LiPF6 into LiF and PF5 is known. In solution, PF5 reacts with carbonates to form a variety of decomposition products including: carbon dioxide (CO2), ethers (R2O), alkylfluorides (RF), phosphorus oxyfluoride (OPF3), and fluorophosphates (OPF2OR, OPF(OR)2), assignment of structure is supported by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography with Mass Selective Detection (GC-MS). Similar decomposition products are observed during the thermal decomposition of carbonate solutions of LiPF6. …

The Current State Of Advance Directive Law In Ohio: More Protective Of Provider Liability Than Patients Rights, Marie Ortman Jan 2005

The Current State Of Advance Directive Law In Ohio: More Protective Of Provider Liability Than Patients Rights, Marie Ortman

Journal of Law and Health

Ohio has adopted the Modified Uniform Rights of the Terminally Ill Act which governs the use and execution of written advance directives as expressions of a patient's desire to consent to or refuse future medical treatment. However, the Act also includes a provision that grants both civil and criminal immunity to health care providers who do not comply with a person's written advance directive. Unfortunately, because of the grant of civil and criminal immunity encompassed within the adopted written advance directive statutes, Ohio law today does not afford any greater protection of a patient's right to refuse medical treatment at …
