A Rhetoric Of Sports Talk Radio, John D. Reffue Nov 2005

A Rhetoric Of Sports Talk Radio, John D. Reffue

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sports talk radio is a broadcast format that has grown exponentially through the 1990's and into the early part of the twenty-first century. Academic publications about the format, especially qualitative analyses, have been extremely limited and previous radio content researchers have called for a more in-depth study of talk radio, in particular the relationships between and among callers, hosts and the listening audience.

This study examines sports talk radio as a format separate from political talk radio programming. An evolution of the format from its roots as a broadcast novelty to the modern day stand-alone genre is traced, including an …

As the Semantic Web gains importance for sharing knowledge on the Internet this has lead to the development and publishing of many ontologies in different domains. When trying to reuse existing ontologies into their applications, users are faced with the problem of determining if an ontology is suitable for their needs. In this paper, we introduce OntoQA, an approach that analyzes ontology schemas and their populations (i.e. knowledgebases) and describes them through a well defined set of metrics. These metrics can highlight key characteristics of an ontology schema as well as its population and enable users to make an informed …

The Perils Of Higher Skill Shortages For Pakistan’S Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2005

The Perils Of Higher Skill Shortages For Pakistan’S Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

It is highly paradoxical that in a developing country such as Pakistan, we are experiencing serious skill shortages and, at the same time, high rates of open and under employment. A lot has already been said about the causes of the mismatch between the skills required by the economy and the skills generated by the educational institutions. In this paper, I am also not going to focus on technical and vocational skills such as carpenters, masons, electricians, plumbers, automobile, air conditioning, refrigeration mechanics, medical technicians, nurses, foremen, etc. but mostly on higher skills such as needed by the I.T. and …

The deminer was doing clearance around an accident site where an AP mine blew off the tire of a car on the 23rd November. The soil in the area is hard and there are lots of metal pieces in the ground. The mine was detonated by the deminer during excavation most likely due to incorrect procedures. The blast went through a gap between the visor and the vest and caused injuries to the deminers face. Also the thumb on his right hand received injuries. The leather gloves the deminer was wearing saved him from worse injuries.

Thanksgiving, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have announced yet another new agreement on drug policy. It may even be the final such policy agreement of the year. As such we can now relax and know that drug use in baseball is under complete and total control. We also know that democracy is spreading across Iraq and throughout the Middle East. And Santa Claus is coming to town.

"Boilerplate": An Introduction, Omri Ben-Shahar Nov 2005

"Boilerplate": An Introduction, Omri Ben-Shahar

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

This short essay introduces the themes that are developed in twelve articles that were delivered recently in a symposium on “Boilerplate: Foundations of Market Contracts” at the University of Michigan Law School. The proceeding of the symposium will be published in Volume 104 of the Michigan Law Review.

Boilerplate And Economic Power In Auto Manufacturing Contracts, Omri Ben-Shahar, James J. White Nov 2005

Boilerplate And Economic Power In Auto Manufacturing Contracts, Omri Ben-Shahar, James J. White

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

This article studies the standard form contracts used by automobile manufacturers to purchase auto parts. It explores how the contracts reflect divisions of bargaining power, asymmetric information, problems of hold-up and renegotiation, and market competition. Based on interviews with representatives of buyers and suppliers, the article also describes the process of drafting the forms, the negotiation over price and other terms in the shadow of these forms, and the opportunities for non-drafters to extract improved terms. Some of the main lessons are: (i) The terms of the contracts and the bidding process prevent ex-post hold-up by suppliers (in contrast to …

The Irrational Auditor And Irrational Liability, Adam C. Pritchard Nov 2005

The Irrational Auditor And Irrational Liability, Adam C. Pritchard

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

This essay argues that less liability for auditors in certain areas might encourage more accurate and useful financial statements, or at least equally accurate statements at a lower cost. Audit quality is promoted by three incentives: reputation, regulation, and litigation. When we take reputation and regulation into account, exposing auditors to potentially massive liability may undermine the effectiveness of reputation and regulation, thereby diminishing integrity of audited financial statements. The relation of litigation to the other incentives that promote audit quality has become more important in light of the sea change that occurred in the regulation of the auditing profession …

Characterization Of The Interactions Between The Active Site Of A Protein Tyrosine Kinase And A Divalent Metal Activator, Xiaofeng Lin, Marina K. Ayrapetov, Gongqin Sun Nov 2005

Characterization Of The Interactions Between The Active Site Of A Protein Tyrosine Kinase And A Divalent Metal Activator, Xiaofeng Lin, Marina K. Ayrapetov, Gongqin Sun

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Background:

Protein tyrosine kinases are important enzymes for cell signalling and key targets for anticancer drug discovery. The catalytic mechanisms of protein tyrosine kinase-catalysed phosphorylation are not fully understood. Protein tyrosine kinase Csk requires two Mg2+ cations for activity: one (M1) binds to ATP, and the other (M2) acts as an essential activator.

Results:

Experiments in this communication characterize the interaction between M2 and Csk. Csk activity is sensitive to pH in the range of 6 to 7. Kinetic characterization indicates that the sensitivity is not due to altered substrate binding, but caused by the sensitivity of M2 binding …

Composable Models For Timing And Liveness Analysis In Distributed Real-Time Embedded Systems Middleware, Venika Subramonian, Christopher Gill, Cesar Sanchez, Henry B. Sipma Nov 2005

Composable Models For Timing And Liveness Analysis In Distributed Real-Time Embedded Systems Middleware, Venika Subramonian, Christopher Gill, Cesar Sanchez, Henry B. Sipma

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Middleware for distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems has grown increasingly complex, to address functional and temporal requirements of diverse applications. While current approaches to modeling middleware have eased the task of assembling, deploying and configuring middleware and the applications that use it, a lower-level set of formal models is needed to uncover subtle timing and liveness hazards introduced by interference between and within distributed computations, particularly in the face of alternative middleware concurrency strategies. In this paper, we propose timed automata as a formal model of low-level middleware building blocks from which a variety different middleware configurations can be constructed. …
