Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In Palembang manuscripts are known to be available originating in the Palembang Palace as well as individual collection. This paper discusses the tradition of copying manuscript in Palembang, beginning with the historical background of Palembang, continuing with Malay manuscript copying in Palembang, and with a limited information on the content of the manuscript. Kepustakawanan Dalam "The Name Of The Rose" Karya Umberto Eco, Laksmi Laksmi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The Name of the Rose, a detective novel, is set by some issues on librarianship during the Middle Age in Europe. By using discourse analysis approach, I try to know how far the concept of the librarianship was understood at that time-in the novel-based on the understanding of some concepts, starting from "library", "development system", "collection handling", which includes "classification", "censorship system" and "librarians' professionalism", until some matters on borrowing and using collection. Besides, this analysis is aimed at identifying cultural values related to the librarianship. The conclusion shows that the librarianship has an important role in providing suspense elements …
Va Savoir! - The Adage "Jura Novit Curia" In Contemporary France, Douglas Brooker
Va Savoir! - The Adage "Jura Novit Curia" In Contemporary France, Douglas Brooker
ExpressO
The Civilian adage jura novit curia – the court knows the law – for all that it is well recognised in France does not receive much scrutiny. This is unusual first because some claim it expresses a fundamental principle of French law and secondly because rules and practices associated with jura novit curia are controversial. The paper remedies the scholarly deficit, scrutinising seven definitions of jura novit curia to catalogue for the first time the divergent meanings associated with the adage and to analyse their status in French law and legal culture. While many meanings are attributed to jura novit …

Buggy Whips And Broadcast Flags: The Need For A New Politics Of Expression, Garrett Levin
Buggy Whips And Broadcast Flags: The Need For A New Politics Of Expression, Garrett Levin
Duke Law & Technology Review
In response to growing fears from the entertainment industry over online file-sharing of valuable content, the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") enacted sweeping regulations over the production of electronic devices in the name of protecting digital television broadcasts. Although the FCC's "broadcast flag" regulation was struck down on jurisdictional grounds, Hollywood has not given up the push for strict control. If Hollywood successfully acquires broadcast flag protection there could be far-reaching implications for innovation and development of new digital technologies. While content providers have important reasons to protect copyrighted material, there is too much at stake to merely acquiesce to their …

Sluice Boxes On The Shores: An Environmental History Of Gold Mining On Oregon's South Coast, Tania Louise Hyatt-Evenson
Sluice Boxes On The Shores: An Environmental History Of Gold Mining On Oregon's South Coast, Tania Louise Hyatt-Evenson
Dissertations and Theses
Environmental historians have researched, analyzed, and concluded that gold mining significantly altered the environment in Southern Oregon. Environmental case studies have examined mining's impact on the watersheds in the Rogue Valley, but none have analyzed the effect gold miners had on the Southern Oregon coast. While gold mining occurred on the South Coast from the 1850s to the 1940s, on a smaller scale, the impact from environmental change is just as significant. The purpose of this study is to understand how mining changed the landscape of the South Coast, and how this change affected the human populations that lived in …
