Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 10th Annual National Conference (2005)

This presentation suggests ways in which students of color can learn, through meaningful research experience, to place into proper context the “majority rules” of a predominantly white institution (University of Nebraska-Lincoln). This process will start with a grassroots experience in Haiti and will end with students incorporating that experience into the campus community.

Introduction To Gendering Modern Japanese History, Barbara Molony Nov 2005

Introduction To Gendering Modern Japanese History, Barbara Molony

History

Gender, as Joan Scott asserted in 1986, is a useful category of historical analysis.1 In the last quarter century, gender has emerged as a lively area of inquiry for historians and other scholars. Gender analysis has suggested some important revisions of the "master narratives" of national histories-that is, the dominant, often celebratory, tales of the successes of a nation and its leaders.2 These narratives, like all histories, are provisional and incomplete and, to varying degrees, reflect the changing material, discursive, and ideological contexts of their times.3 To mention just two of the fields of history that had …

Women, Migration, And The Body-Less Spirit Of Capitalist Patriarchy, Mechthild Hart Nov 2005

Women, Migration, And The Body-Less Spirit Of Capitalist Patriarchy, Mechthild Hart

Journal of International Women's Studies

The continuously expanding global free trade in domestic and sex workers intensifies old capitalist-patriarchal forms of extracting women’s emotional, physical, and sexual labor. The patriarchal dream of seizing control of impure, unruly life has now entered its neoliberal stage, exemplified by money begetting money in the virtual sphere of financial speculation, and by biotechnology’s promise to create a world that is no longer in need of impure female mothering bodies. The very nature of the work associated with unruly life delivers, however, a major blow to the patriarchal vision of a totally controlled, purified, body-less world. Imported female ‘servants of …

Introducing Discipline: Anthropology And Human Rights Administrations, Iris Jean-Klein, Annelise Riles Nov 2005

Introducing Discipline: Anthropology And Human Rights Administrations, Iris Jean-Klein, Annelise Riles

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Anthropologists engage human rights administrations with an implicit promise that our discipline has something unique to offer. The articles in this special issue turn questions about relevance and care so often heard in the context of debates about human rights outside in. They focus not on how anthropology can contribute to human rights activities, but on what anthropological encounters with human rights contribute to the development of our discipline. They ask, how exactly do we render the subject relevant to anthropology? Reflecting on some ways anthropologists in this field have dispensed care for their subjects, the authors highlight two modalities …

Distributions Of Epiphytic Orchids And Bromeliads On Secondary Forest And Pasture Trees, November 2005, Greta Brom-Palkowski Nov 2005

Distributions Of Epiphytic Orchids And Bromeliads On Secondary Forest And Pasture Trees, November 2005, Greta Brom-Palkowski

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The locations and densities of epiphytic orchids and bromeliads growing on host trees are influenced greatly by differences in epiphyte requirements for light, moisture and nutrients. Because these factors differ greatly between minimally and highly disturbed habitats, epiphytic composition may also be altered. This study examined changes in epiphytic orchid and bromeliad density between hosts in secondary forest and pasture. Fifteen trees in each habitat type were censused for the abundance of orchids and bromeliads in different parts of the trees. Results indicated that the highest concentration of both orchids and bromeliads is in the pasture. In addition, in both …

An Introductory Essay: Are We In “The Age Of Resistance” In A Post-9/11 World?, J. P. Linstroth Nov 2005

An Introductory Essay: Are We In “The Age Of Resistance” In A Post-9/11 World?, J. P. Linstroth

Peace and Conflict Studies

This introductory article to the Special Issue of Peace and Conflict Studies asks, “are we in the ‘Age of Resistance’ in a post-9/11 world?” It is argued the concept of “resistance” may be framed in a broad theoretical context to include multiple and contested meanings by social and political actors as well as by scholars and through intellectual debate. The article questions recent ideas prevalent in fauxpolitical science studies which promote a clash of civilizations, essentialize histories, support anachronistic Orientalist-approaches, and bolster foreign policy initiatives by removing the human element. The contention is for researchers and theorists to concentrate on …

Weight Control Behavior And Women: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Walcott-Mcquigg Nov 2005

Weight Control Behavior And Women: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Walcott-Mcquigg

Journal of International Women's Studies

The objective of this study was to seek directly from culturally diverse women information on their weight control behavior. Specific questions were: What types of weight control behavior are practiced by women? 2) What factors influence participation in weight control behavior? and, 3) what are the cultural influences on women’s motivation and ability to participate in weight control behavior? Face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 135 middle-income women (African American, Caucasian, Mexican American, Puerto Rican) in their homes, offices, and at other places in their neighborhoods. Additional data collection included measuring body weight and height. The …

Mainstreaming Gender In Hiv/Aids Programs: Ongoing Challenges And New Opportunities In Malawi, Rebecca Tiessen Nov 2005

Mainstreaming Gender In Hiv/Aids Programs: Ongoing Challenges And New Opportunities In Malawi, Rebecca Tiessen

Journal of International Women's Studies

Numerous efforts are in place in Malawi to address the high rates of HIV/AIDS in the country. Furthermore, several successes in HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation (including free anti-retroviral drugs to people living with AIDS) have been documented. Fewer successes, however, have been achieved in integrating gender issues into HIV/AIDS programs. In this article I begin by defining gender mainstreaming and why it is central to HIV/AIDS programming. The second objective of this paper is to summarize the existing initiatives to mainstream gender in HIV/AIDS programs. The final objective is to uncover the ongoing needs, gaps and challenges for gender mainstreaming …

Mri-Assessed Volume Of Left And Right Hippocampi In Females Correlates With The Relative Length Of The Second And Fourth Fingers (The 2d : 4d Ratio), Janos Kallai, Arpad Csatho, Ferenc Kover, Tamas Makany, Janos Nemes, Krisztina Horvath, Norbert Kovacs, John T. Manning, Lynn Nadel, Ferenc Nagy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Atrophy of the left or right side of the hippocampus has been related to cognitive deficits and psychiatric disease. In this study, we examined the correlation between the hippocampal volume laterality index and the relative lengths of the second (index finger) and fourth (ring finger) digits (2D:4D) in healthy female subjects. The 2D:4D ratio is fixed in utero, and the ratio is higher in women than in men. There is evidence that this ratio is an indicator of the intrauterine concentration of testosterone, which influences the development of different regions of the brain. Assessing the volume of different parts of …

Walking On Uneven Paths: The Transcultural Experience Of Migrant Children In France And Ireland, Rossella Ragazzi Nov 2005

Walking On Uneven Paths: The Transcultural Experience Of Migrant Children In France And Ireland, Rossella Ragazzi

Doctoral

This thesis foregrounds the application of anthropological documentary methods and ethnographic investigation in examining the world of child immigrants and the cross-cultural dilemmas they encounter upon entering the formal educational system of the ‘host’ country- in this case, a primary school setting in Dublin and Paris. The specificity of the primary school classroom as an ethnographic site facilitates a sustained audio-visual examination of immigrant children as they work to re-build their identities in a new and unfamiliar environment. Such a richly textured space opens up potential avenues of exploration for the researcher: what, for example, can intercultural pedagogy learn from …
