The Impact Of Visual Aids On Memory In Preaching, Curtis Deterding May 2005

The Impact Of Visual Aids On Memory In Preaching, Curtis Deterding

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Are hearers able to better retain what they have heard preached if visual aids are used? This is the central question answered by this thesis. A primary presupposition of this project is that when we involve the use of sight during the sermon event, our ablitity to remember what was said increases. In this study, the theoretical and theological analysis of remembering and memory are discussed in connection with the use of visuals for retention. Those who participated in the project as hearers were asked to evaluate some sermons that used visual aids and some that did not. Based on …

Stress And The Common Cold, Nicole Kinman, Angela Vincent

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Stress is very common among people especially in today’s world. People also seem to be getting colds much more often than they used to. Does stress cause people to get sick more often? In the present study 40 participants, all Lindenwood University students ages 18 to 29 years old took a stress test and a health questionnaire in an attempt to determine whether or not the more stressed a person is the more often they will get sick. The participants were asked to spare five minutes of their time to complete the two surveys. This study determined that there is …

How Males And Females Feel About Body Image, Hannah Briscoe, Cadey Kuehnel

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

We wanted to see if the participants have a low or high body image. The participants were asked questions determining how they feel about their body image and others around them. Our hypothesis is that the younger participants will have a lower body image then those older, males will have a higher body image than females and seniors will have a higher body image than freshmen. The subjects were from the Human Subjects Pool at Lindenwood University consisting of general psychology, Anthropology, and Sociology classes. Our findings were significant with our hypothesis.

Do Sports Have An Effect On School Performance?, Tara Clegg

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The amount of time someone spends playing and practicing for a sport, or how much involvement it has with other activities was studied in respect to performance in school. Students were assumed to not do well in school if they were too involved with sports and other extracurricular activities. The students that participated in the research were all from the human subject pool at Lindenwood University. These students were either in a psychology, anthropology, or sociology class to receive extra credit. All of them were administered a ten questions survey in regards to involvement and school. In the study, 28 …

Deconstructing The “War Of All Against All”: The Prevalence And Implications Of War Metaphors And Other Adversarial News Schema In Time, Newsweek, And Maclean’S, Michael Karlberg, Leslie Buell May 2005

Deconstructing The “War Of All Against All”: The Prevalence And Implications Of War Metaphors And Other Adversarial News Schema In Time, Newsweek, And Maclean’S, Michael Karlberg, Leslie Buell

Peace and Conflict Studies

This study examines and critiques the discursive construction of a Hobbesian “war of all against all” in North American commercial news magazines. The prevalence of war metaphors and related adversarial news schemas is documented over a twenty year period, from 1981 to 2000, through an analysis of TIME and Newsweek, along with their Canadian counterpart Maclean’s. After documenting the pervasiveness of these discursive constructs, the paper discusses the underlying causes and potential consequences of these patterns in commercial news discourse. The paper concludes by asserting that this discursively constructed “war of all against all” is highly problematic and unsustainable in …

A Multi-Scale Analysis Of Census-Based Land Surface Temperature Variations And Determinants In Indianapolis, Indiana, Bingqing Liang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mapping urban temperatures are one of the major foci in urban climatology studies due to its close relationships with environmental, economic, and social issues. Most previous urban temperature studies were based on a single scale. This study utilized remote sensing and GIS data to perform a multiple scale analysis of urban temperatures. Land surface temperatures (LST) data derived from a Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) image were used to examine census-based variations and to model their numerical relationships with urban morphology in Marion County, Indiana. Selected variables for the urban morphology include Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NOVI), buildings, roads, …

The Effect Of Scaling-Up On Remotely Derived Leaf Area Index Estimators In The Brazilian Amazon, John I. Menzies

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research compared a traditional statistical technique with artificial neural networks to determine their effectiveness for modeling LAI in the Santarem region of the Brazilian Amazon. In addition, different satellite sensors in the form of ETM+, ASTER, MO DIS, and IKONOS were used to assess if spatial and spectral resolutions play a role in the ability to estimate LAI. This study focused on the following: (1) Determining if neural networks perform more accurately than multiple regression for LAI modeling (2) the effectiveness of different resolution satellite data including ETM+, ASTER, MODIS, and IKONOS for LAI estimation; (3) determining if spatial …

Culture And Motivation In Online Learning Environments, Frances A. Clem Edd May 2005

Culture And Motivation In Online Learning Environments, Frances A. Clem Edd

Dissertations

In the past, instructional design of online learning has largely ignored culture in the creation of online learning environments. Because research in the interaction of culture and online learning is very sparse, an exploratory, blended study was conducted to assess whether there is evidence that one measurable aspect of learners’ culture interacts with the online learning environment in ways that can be observed and identified, and whether this interaction impacts learners’ motivation and behavior in those environments. “Culture” is a complex concept consisting of many interrelated behaviors and values. For this reason, the study focused on one single aspect of …

More Than Meets The Ear: The Culture Behind The Music, Anita Sant May 2005

More Than Meets The Ear: The Culture Behind The Music, Anita Sant

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

More than Meets the Ear: The Culture behind the Music is a traveling exhibit that was designed and created over more than a year's time at Utah State University's museum of anthropology. As one member of a team of interns, I helped decide on an exhibit focus, its audience, content, and design. We started from the ground up as inexperienced undergraduates under the tutelage of the museum's curator, Lara Petersen, and the museum's director, Dr. Bonnie Pitblado.

As the project gradually progressed and was honed to the subject of ethnomusicology, I took on the responsibility of the educational aspect of …

Alternative Futures For The Bear River Watershed, Richard E. Toth

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The Bear River Watershed (BRW) is located in northeastern Utah, southeastern Idaho, and southwestern Wyoming. Over the three states the watershed encompasses an area of 7,500 square miles (4,800,000 acres). The Bear River 's headwaters begin at close to 13,000 feet in the High Uintas Wilderness Area of northeastern Utah. The course of the river follows a horseshoe pattern flowing north through Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho before bending south at Soda Springs. The river then meanders through the Gem and Cache Valleys before reaching its delta at the Great Salt Lake at an elevation of 4,211 feet.

Repeat Migration In The United States: A Comparison Of Black, Hispanic, And White Return And Onward Migrants, Beth A. Wilson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The primary objective of this study is to examine U.S. repeat migration for blacks, Hispanics, and whites. It investigates the relationships and patterns of these different racial/ethnic groups utilizing the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79). Repeat migration within and across categories of individual characteristics for blacks, Hispanics, and whites, is compared in order to determine if there are differences in the overall rates of repeat migration for these groups, once other factors are controlled.

To do this several statistical procedures are utilized, and the results of selected descriptive and logistic analyses are presented. The descriptive statistics control for …

A Needs Assessment Of Marriage And Family Therapy Approved Supervision In Utah, Daniel J. Woodbury May 2005

A Needs Assessment Of Marriage And Family Therapy Approved Supervision In Utah, Daniel J. Woodbury

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research presents data gathered through a needs assessment regarding approved supervision in Utah. A sample of ISO therapists in Utah gave descriptive facts about the current need for supervision in Utah as well as the number of therapists that are willing to provide supervision. Additionally, therapists that are not currently approved supervisors indicated whether or not they would be willing to become approved supervisors, what would make the designation more appealing, and what would impede them from becoming an approved supervisor. Therapists in agencies also gave information regarding how agencies currently view marriage and family therapy interns and their …

Constructing A Risk Controversy: The Case Of A Proposed High-Level Nuclear Waste Repository On The Skull Valley Goshute Indian Reservation, Taunya J. Jones May 2005

Constructing A Risk Controversy: The Case Of A Proposed High-Level Nuclear Waste Repository On The Skull Valley Goshute Indian Reservation, Taunya J. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis is a qualitative case study of a risk controversy generated by a proposal to construct a high-level nuclear waste repository on the Goshute Indian reservation in rural, northwestern Utah. Using data taken from local newspapers and public hearings, I examine and compare the claims-making activity of project opponents and project proponents. I explore and analyze variability in claims making along four specific dimensions: risk communication, trust and distrust in science and technology, environmental equity, and tribal sovereignty. My analysis is intended to illuminate the sources of contention between opponent and proponent claims-making groups in this case.

"Holiness Is Not A Luxury Of The Pure": Blessed Mother Teresa Of Calcutta And The Struggle Over Symbols, Emily Petty Puckett Rodgers May 2005

"Holiness Is Not A Luxury Of The Pure": Blessed Mother Teresa Of Calcutta And The Struggle Over Symbols, Emily Petty Puckett Rodgers

Anthropology Undergraduate Honors Theses

“Holiness is not a luxury of the pure” (Mother Teresa 1987). The quote that forms part of the title for this paper is from an interview with Mother Teresa that appeared in Anne and Jeanette Petrie’s film “Mother Teresa” in 1986. Mother Teresa is referring to the forms of holiness that can appear in unlikely places, such as in the homeless and dying of Calcutta. Just as these forms of holiness are constructed in unexpected and conceivably impure places, so are symbols. Neither holiness, nor symbols are necessarily pure, although their users may want to project them as such.

An Integrated Conflict Management System For The Private Sector Workplace, Jessica Kettle May 2005

An Integrated Conflict Management System For The Private Sector Workplace, Jessica Kettle

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis begins with an examination inside the private sector workplace and the manner in which the corporate environment currently manages conflict. Upon defining the methods that seem to be best practices, this thesis will analyze what is valuable and what changes should be implemented for a more effective system. The model that is projected serves as a preliminary proposal of the content of an integrative conflict management system. It does not discuss in detail the cost / benefit analysis of a current structure versus what the costs the new system would assume. Also, its purpose is not to yet …
