Whither Color-Blind Love? A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis Of Love In Black And White, Brian A. Mcelwain Jan 2005

Whither Color-Blind Love? A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis Of Love In Black And White, Brian A. Mcelwain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interracial marriage remains one of the most emotionally charged issues in the troubled racial history of the United States. Love in Black and White: The Triumph of Love over Prejudice and Taboo is Mark and Gail Mathabane's relatively popular memoir of their interracial marriage. Using this text as a means of access to the discourses surrounding interracial marriage in the post-Civil Rights era, this study applies the key Foucauldian concepts of discourse, power, subjectivity, and critique to an interpretation of this text in relation to its sociohistorical context. Color-Blind Love emerges as the dominant discourse of the memoir and this …

Biosynthesis Of Trans-2-Hexenal In Response To Wounding In Strawberry Fruit And Interaction Of Trans-2-Hexenal With Botrytis Cinerea, Kyung Myung Jan 2005

Biosynthesis Of Trans-2-Hexenal In Response To Wounding In Strawberry Fruit And Interaction Of Trans-2-Hexenal With Botrytis Cinerea, Kyung Myung

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Intact strawberry fruit did not produce detectable t-2-H which is derived from -linolenic acid (18:3). However, in response to wounding by gentle bruising, strawberry fruit emitted t-2-H with the largest quantity produced within 10 min following injury. The level of total lipid 18:3 in the fruit increased two-fold in response to wounding whereas free 18:3 declined slightly (about 30%). At 10 min following wounding, fruit exhibited a 25% increase in 13-lipoxygenase (LOX) activity, which leads to the production of 13-hydroperoxyoctadecatrienoic acid (13-HPOT) from 18:3. The activity of hydroperoxide lyase (HPL), which catalyzes formation of cis-3-hexenal (c-3-H), the precursor of t-2-H, …

Isolation And Characterization Of The Four Arabidopsis Thaliana Poly(A) Polymerase Genes, Lisa Renee Meeks Jan 2005

Isolation And Characterization Of The Four Arabidopsis Thaliana Poly(A) Polymerase Genes, Lisa Renee Meeks

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Poly(A) tail addition to pre-mRNAs is a highly coordinated and essential step in mRNA maturation involving multiple cis- and trans-acting factors. The trans-acting factor, poly(A) polymerase (PAP) plays an essential role in the polyadenylation of mRNA precursors. The Arabidopsis thaliana genome contains four putative PAP genes. We have found, using in silico analysis and transgenic plants expressing GUS under the control of the four PAP promoters, that each of these genes is expressed in overlapping, yet unique patterns. This gives rise to the possibility that these genes are not redundant and may be essential for plant survival. To further test …

Universal Human Rights, The United Nations, And The Telos Of Human Dignity, William J. Wagner Jan 2005

Universal Human Rights, The United Nations, And The Telos Of Human Dignity, William J. Wagner

Scholarly Articles

In this short essay, I seek to provide a description of the way the rights framework, by its nature, functions to unify global practice around normative ideals. I then outline obstacles, both theoretical and practical, to the effective functioning of this framework and the advancement of its purpose. Next, I lay out and critique the means that the Church, in its official teaching, proposes for overcoming these obstacles. I conclude by sketching briefly what I understand to be a more adequate program for addressing the impediments that exist to the realization of the aspiration of universal respect for human dignity …

The Usa Patriot Act, Toni Panetta Jan 2005

The Usa Patriot Act, Toni Panetta

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The events of September 11, 2001 serve as the origin of the United States’ War on Terror as popularized by the Bush administration. Previously, American strategies to combat terrorism focused on attacks against its interests abroad, and support for other governments’ efforts to curb terrorist acts within their own boundaries. However, September 11 revealed vulnerability to violence by non-state actors within U.S. borders. In response, the United States reshaped its anti-terrorist strategies to prevent future attacks by targeting terrorists, foreign and domestic, known and potential.

Accumulation Of Retinol In The Liver After Prolonged Hyporetinolemia In The Vitamin A-Sufficient Rat, Sin Gieng, Jens Raila, Francisco Rosales Jan 2005

Accumulation Of Retinol In The Liver After Prolonged Hyporetinolemia In The Vitamin A-Sufficient Rat, Sin Gieng, Jens Raila, Francisco Rosales

Faculty Publications

We assessed the effects of prolonged reduction of plasma retinol concentrations (hyporetinolemia) on the distribution of tissue vitamin A (VA) and of its active compounds using a model of continuous recombinant human interleukin-6 (rhIL-6) infusion via osmotic minipumps in VA-sufficient male rats. Plasma retinol and retinol-binding protein (RBP) concentrations remained decreased and lower in rhIL-6-treated rats compared with controls from 7.5 h throughout 7 days of infusion (P < 0.001). This reduction was accompanied by a 68% increase in hepatic retinol concentration by 7 days (P < 0.05). Hepatic and renal retinyl palmitate and retinoic acid concentrations did not change, and renal megalin content remained unchanged; hepatic RBP concentrations were 41% lower in rhIL-6-treated rats compared with controls (P < 0.05). These results indicate that instead of being lost, retinol accumulated in the liver during inflammation and that hyporetinolemia was attributable to a decrease in the availability of hepatic RBP. A plausible consequence of the effect of rhIL-6-induced hyporetinolemia is that by 7 days tissues that are dependent on plasma retinol may become deprived of VA.These results have important implications in understanding the mechanism by which measles infection induces hyporetinolemia and VA deficiency of extrahepatic tissues.

Vaccine-associated feline sarcoma (VAFS) with multiple recurrences was diagnosed in the specimens at the injection site of a Turkish Van cat that had been vaccinated four months previously. The original tumor consisted of two compartments each 2.5 cm and 3.5 cm in diameter. It recurred five times following surgery and local recurrences necessitated five more radical resections within two years. Euthanasia was performed when pleural effusion developed, but evidence of metastatic disease was not observed. This article reports the first case of a vaccine-associated feline sarcoma in a Turkish Van cat clinically diagnosed as prominent evidence of postvaccinal sarcoma from …

Aspergillosis And Gastric Impaction In An Ostrich, Azi̇z Arda Sancak, Jale Paracikoğlu Jan 2005

Aspergillosis And Gastric Impaction In An Ostrich, Azi̇z Arda Sancak, Jale Paracikoğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

It is inevitable to encounter many diseases of ostriches in Turkey as a consequence of the rapid expansion of ostrich farming and flocks in this country. Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from the lungs and air sacs of a 3-month-old, male, blue-neck ostrich. In postmortem examination, the ingestion of a large amount of gravel was noted. The accumulated gravel had led to an occlusion of the passage between the proventriculus and gizzard. This work appears to be the first report of aspergillosis and gastric impaction developing together and leading to death in an ostrich.

Environmentally Friendly Technology: The Behaviour Of Natural And Synthetic Binder Systems Within Paper Coatings, Giuliano Laudone Jan 2005

Environmentally Friendly Technology: The Behaviour Of Natural And Synthetic Binder Systems Within Paper Coatings, Giuliano Laudone

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Coating shrinkage upon drying is a phenomenon well known to the paper coating industry, where it often causes changes in the final structure of the coating layer leading to poor results in terms of gloss, light scattering, surface strength, coverage, uniformity and printability. Such shrinkage has in previous studies been wrongly associated with shrinkage of the polymeric binders used in the coating formulation, by making erroneous comparison with solvent-based paint systems. Natural binders, as starch or proteins, which come from renewable resources and are therefore environmentally friendly, suffer more from this shrinkage phenomenon than synthetic binders. The aim of this …

Phosphorus Speciation In Soil Leachate Using Field-Flow Fractionation And Flow Injection Analysis, Laura Jane Gimbert Jan 2005

Phosphorus Speciation In Soil Leachate Using Field-Flow Fractionation And Flow Injection Analysis, Laura Jane Gimbert

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Colloidal material (0.001 - 1 um) in soil leachate and agricultural drainage waters is an important route for the transport of contaminants such as phosphorus from land to catchments. Excessive phosphorus concentrations can result in eutrophication of natural waters. To be able to characterise the colloidal material, in terms of size distribution, a mild and relatively new separation technique field-flow fractionation (FFF) can be used to fractionate complex colloidal samples. By combining FFF and flow injection analysis (FIA) more detailed physico-chemical information on phosphorus species in soil leachates and agricultural runoff waters can be obtained. Chapter 1 describes the methods …

Computational Models Of The Thalamocortical Circuit: Sleep Oscillations And Receptive Fields., Nada Yousif Jan 2005

Computational Models Of The Thalamocortical Circuit: Sleep Oscillations And Receptive Fields., Nada Yousif

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The thalamus is a subcortical structure, which consists of a collection of functionally and morphologically defined nuclei. A subset of these, the sensory nuclei, receive information from the periphery and relay it to the related primary cortical area. Hence the thalamus was traditionaUy assumed to passively relay afferent information. However, the fact that thalamic relay cells receive a large proportion of their sjoiaptic inputs from the cortical cells to which they project, has led to the consensus that there is a more significant thalamic contribution to sensory processing. This thesis investigates the role of the thalamocortical feedback loop using population-level …
