Reliability And Validity Of Virtual Build Methodology For Ergonomics Analyses, Tinghao Wu

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the Virtual Build methodology for ergonomics design and analysis. Thirty-six human subjects participated in this study and performed a set of six tasks. The tasks were performed twice in both real and virtual environment. The subject?s motion in performing tasks was analyzed by ergonomics assessments by using Virtual Build methodology. Criteria-related validity was evaluated by comparing the Virtual Build ergonomic assessment results with manual calculation. Test-retest reliability was evaluated by correlating ergonomics assessment results between two trials. The result shows that the Virtual Build methodology is reliable for ergonomic …

Two- And Three-Plane Job Risk Classification Using Motion Capture: An Examination Of The Marras Et Al. Model, 1993, Tara Marie Cappelli Dec 2005

Two- And Three-Plane Job Risk Classification Using Motion Capture: An Examination Of The Marras Et Al. Model, 1993, Tara Marie Cappelli

Theses and Dissertations

Lower Back Disorders account for 16-19% of work related claims and 33-41% of dollars paid in workers? compensation (as cited in Marras, 1999), with impacts to society approaching $100 billion dollars annually (as cited in Marras et al., 1999). Dr. William Marras engineered a device to track trunk kinematics in order to develop a Job Risk Classification Model for predicting high-risk group probability of lower back injury. The device has been validated, but other technologies such as 3-D motion capture can potentially gather the same data. This study examined the use of motion capture to apply two- and three-plane lifting …

Experimental Study On The Effects Of Operational Parameters Of A Downdraft Gasifier, Lin Wei

Theses and Dissertations

To examine the effects of operational parameters on syn-gas quality and biouel conversion rate under various running conditions, an experimental study of hardwood chip?s gasification in a downdraft gasifier was conducted. The resulting syn-gas had average low heating value of 5.79 ± 0.52 MJ/ Nm3, tar concentration of 14.06 ± 8.54 mg/Nm³, particulate concentration of 3.05 ± 1.79 mg/Nm³, hardwood conversion rate of 2.37±0.24 Nm³/kg, and carbon conversion rate of 98.01 ± 0.53%. This syn-gas is of acceptable quality to be used as a fuel source for internal combustion engine operations. The gasifier?s grate temperature had no evident effects on …

Definition, Analysis, And An Approach For Discrete-Event Simulation Model Interoperability, Tai-Chi Wu Dec 2005

Definition, Analysis, And An Approach For Discrete-Event Simulation Model Interoperability, Tai-Chi Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Even though simulation technology provides great benefits to industry, it is largely underutilized. One of the biggest barriers to utilizing simulation is the lack of interoperability between simulation models. This is especially true when simulation models that need to interact with each other span an enterprise or supply chain. These models are likely to be distributed and developed in disparate simulation application software. In order to analyze the dynamic behavior of the systems they represent, the models must interoperate. However, currently this interoperability is nearly impossible. The interaction of models also refers to the understanding of them among stakeholders in …

Design Optimization Of A Parallel Hybrid Powertrain Using Derivative-Free Algorithms, Sachin Kumar Porandla Dec 2005

Design Optimization Of A Parallel Hybrid Powertrain Using Derivative-Free Algorithms, Sachin Kumar Porandla

Theses and Dissertations

A Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is a complex electro-mechanical-chemical system that involves two or more energy sources. The inherent advantages of HEVs are their increased fuel economy, reduced harmful emissions and better vehicle performance. The extent of improvement in fuel economy and vehicle performance greatly depends on selecting optimal component sizes. The complex interaction between the various components makes it difficult to size specific components manually or analytically. So, simulation-based multi-variable design optimization is a possible solution for such kind of system level design problems. The multi-modal, noisy and discontinuous nature of the Hybrid Vehicle design requires the use of …

The Development Of A Methodology For Assessing Industrial Workstations Using Computer-Aided Ergonomics And Digital Human Models, Jinyan Du

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined an existing industrial workstation at an automobile assembly plant using computer aided ergonomics and digital human models. The purpose of this evaluation was the development of a methodology useful for evaluating workstations to identify potential design issues that could result in musculoskeletal injury in a real work environment. An ergonomic risk assessment was conducted on a lifting task while being performed both manually and using an assist device. JACK digital human modeling and ergonomics software were used to conduct a computer-based ergonomic analysis. Four analysis tools in JACK (static strength analysis, rapid upper limb assessment, metabolic energy …

Evaluation Of Chitosan Gelatin Complex Scaffolds For Articular Cartilage Tissue Engineering, Harshal Prabhakar Mahajan Dec 2005

Evaluation Of Chitosan Gelatin Complex Scaffolds For Articular Cartilage Tissue Engineering, Harshal Prabhakar Mahajan

Theses and Dissertations

In search of better scaffolding materials for in vitro culture of chondrocytes, the combination of chitosan (similar to glycosoaminoglycans) and gelatin (denatured collagen) was tested due to its resemblance to cartilage extra-cellular matrix (ECM). Porous scaffolds were fabricated from chitosan gelatin blends (1:1, 2:1, and 3:1). The response of chondrocytes to them was evaluated from the amount of sulphated GAG and collagen type 2 secreted after 3 and 5 weeks. The effect due to static (transwell inserts) and dynamic (rotating bioreactor) culture methods was analyzed. Results indicate that 1:1 chitosan gelatin blends showed the best chondro-conductive potential. The rotating bioreactor …

Biomechanical And Metabolic Changes Within Rabbit Articular Cartilage Following Treatment With Radiofrequency Energy, Christopher Larry Horstman Dec 2005

Biomechanical And Metabolic Changes Within Rabbit Articular Cartilage Following Treatment With Radiofrequency Energy, Christopher Larry Horstman

Theses and Dissertations

The effects caused to articular cartilage by the remote use of arthroscopically-delivered RF energy to soft tissues in the joint are unknown. This investigation reported the short and long-term effects of bRF and mRF energy on the biomechanical properties and metabolic activity of articular cartilage. In addition, the effect of Cosequin® therapy was addressed. Thirty New Zealand white rabbits were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups (Group 1 - placebo; Group 2 - Cosequin®). Histopathology, cell viability, GAG synthesis, and mechanical function of the articular cartilage were compared between groups. Data were analyzed using a mixed model ANOVA …

Plasma Steroid And Vitellogenin Concentrations, Activity Of Cathepsins, And Egg Protein Content During Oocyte Maturation, And Influence Of Hormone Injection In Four Commercial Strains Of Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus, Marinela Barrero-Monzon Dec 2005

Plasma Steroid And Vitellogenin Concentrations, Activity Of Cathepsins, And Egg Protein Content During Oocyte Maturation, And Influence Of Hormone Injection In Four Commercial Strains Of Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus, Marinela Barrero-Monzon

Theses and Dissertations

Profiles of plasma estradiol and testosterone concentrations, cathepsin D, L, and B activities, and quantitative and qualitative protein content were developed and evaluated in four commercial strains of channel catfish, Gold Kist (2), Thompson and NWAC-103 for one year (age 2 to age 3). Great variation between individuals of the same strain precluded the identification of any significant, strain-specific differences for the variables under investigation. When variables from fish of all strains were collectively evaluated over time, both estradiol and testosterone concentrations significantly increased in July and then later from February to April. The increase in hormone concentration was accompanied …
