Economic Systems Of Foraging, Agricultural, And Industrial Societies, Frederic L. Pryor Jan 2005

Economic Systems Of Foraging, Agricultural, And Industrial Societies, Frederic L. Pryor

Economics Faculty Works

Drawing upon the disciplines of economics, anthropology, and history, and employing a new and unified analytic approach, Frederic L. Pryor reformulates in this book the entire field of comparative economic systems. He examines large samples of foraging (hunting, gathering, and fishing), agricultural, and industrial economies to explore four key questions: What are the distinct economic systems found in each group? Why do certain societies or nations have one economic system rather than another? What impact do economic systems have on the performance of the economy? How do these economic systems develop and change? The results provide a context that allows …

Ethanol Effects On Reward Value Judgment Following Infusions Into The Amygdala: Implications For Emotional Processing, Stephanie M. Brewer '05 Jan 2005

Ethanol Effects On Reward Value Judgment Following Infusions Into The Amygdala: Implications For Emotional Processing, Stephanie M. Brewer '05

Honors Projects

Alcohol, when delivered systemically, leads to impaired performance on a variety of tasks, including emotionally-laden or reward value tasks. It is also known that lesions to the amygdala produce emotional or reward value deficits. However, it is unknown whether the emotional deficits observed after alcohol ingestion are due to alcohol's direct effect on the amygdala. The present study examined the effects of alcohol when infused directly into the amygdala on emotional memory and judgment. Eight male Long-Evans rats were trained on a behavioral task to associate one sweetness level with a reward and another sweetness level with no reward. Once …

Conservation Of Subterranean Biodiversity In Western Australia: Using Molecular Genetics To Define Spatial And Temporal Relationships, Mark Adams, Stefan Eberhard, Remko Leys Jan 2005

Conservation Of Subterranean Biodiversity In Western Australia: Using Molecular Genetics To Define Spatial And Temporal Relationships, Mark Adams, Stefan Eberhard, Remko Leys

KIP Abstracts

The Jewel Cave karst system in southwestern Australia contains a community of aquatic invertebrates that is listed as critically endangered owing to lowering water levels in cave lakes. A key question for conservation of biodiversity patterns was to determine the most appropriate spatial scale; viz. lake microscale, cave mesoscale, catchment macroscale, or regional megascale). A second key question was to understand the historical relationship between the community and cave water levels, necessary to evaluate the risk of extinction related to predictions of drying climate in southwestern Australia. This study used molecular genetic techniques (allozyme electrophoresis and mitochondrial DNA sequencing) to …

Crisis, Farming And Community, Christine Hagar, C Haythornthwaite Jan 2005

Crisis, Farming And Community, Christine Hagar, C Haythornthwaite

Faculty Publications

In 2001, the UK was hit by Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) precipitating one of the biggest crises ever to affect the UK farming system. The crisis unfolded as a series of information and communication problems, from government to farmers and from farmers to farmers, with consequences for action in a time of crisis, social support, and the maintenance of community. What happens to a farming community during such a crisis? When the countryside shuts down, and no one can enter or leave the farm, how can information be disseminated? As methods of dealing with the disease change rapidly, as …

Who Believes What? Clearing Up Confusion About Intelligent Design And Young-Earth Creationism, Marcus R. Ross Jan 2005

Who Believes What? Clearing Up Confusion About Intelligent Design And Young-Earth Creationism, Marcus R. Ross

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The question of what differentiates young-Earth creationism (YEC) from Intelligent Design (ID) has resulted in inaccurate and confusing terminology, and hinders both understanding and dialogue. Though both YEC and ID groups have drawn distinctions between themselves, previous attempts to classify design-based positions on origins have been unable to adequately resolve their relationships. The Nested Hierarchy of Design, a multiple-character classification system, categorizes teleological positions according to the strength of claims regarding the reality, detectability, source, method, and timing of design, and results in an accurate and robust classification of numerous positions. This method avoids the philosophical and theological pitfalls of …

Involvement Of Complex Carbohydrate Chemistry In Alzheimer’S Disease, David A. Dewitt, Rudy J. Castellani, George Perry, Mark A. Smith Jan 2005

Involvement Of Complex Carbohydrate Chemistry In Alzheimer’S Disease, David A. Dewitt, Rudy J. Castellani, George Perry, Mark A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The cardinal feature of Alzheimer disease is the extracellular deposition of proteinaceous amyloid-β fibrils as senile plaques. Amyloid-β plays an essential role in disease diagnosis and is also thought by many to be a key mediator of disease pathogenesis. As such, there are tremendous efforts underway to understand mechanisms of amyloid deposition. In this context, it is notable that the actual term amyloid, represents a historical misnomer (being derived from amylose, i.e., starch) and since this realization, the contribution of carbohydrates in disease pathogenesis has largely been ignored. However, recently, two emerging lines of evidence indicate not only that the …

Population And Sustainability, Geoffrey Mcnicoll Jan 2005

Population And Sustainability, Geoffrey Mcnicoll

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Sustainability refers to the preservation of human-valued natural capital—the resources that provide environmental services—at a level sufficient to assure the well-being of future generations. This Population Council working paper assess the effects on the total and per capita availability of those services. The degradation of environmental services—exemplified by the overuse of aquifers or (at a global level) of the atmospheric carbon sink—is a significant threat to sustainable development, one that is often exacerbated by population growth. The critical management issue in such cases is the design of effective governing institutions to restrain service demand and safeguard supply. Uncertainties arising from …

Dangerous Memories: Lynching And The U.S. Literary Imagination, Anne P. Rice Jan 2005

Dangerous Memories: Lynching And The U.S. Literary Imagination, Anne P. Rice

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The terrorization of African Americans through lynching was a national cultural trauma producing a struggle over the meaning of suffering, victimization and moral responsibility. The lesson you were meant to learn from white supremacy and terror powerfully affected how you remembered lynching. My dissertation asks who remembered (and did not remember) what about lynching and how these habits of memory influenced literary and visual representations. I consider the impact of race, gender, class, and sexuality on how lynching was textualized and performed, avoided and blocked. While much recent scholarship has concentrated on the visual technologies of lynching, lynching was also …
