Clinical research has also shown that herbals have genuine utility in the treatment of liver diseases. The article deals with investigative work …

Promising Phytochemicals From Indian Medicinal Plants, Amrit Pal Singh Jan 2005

Promising Phytochemicals From Indian Medicinal Plants, Amrit Pal Singh

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The medicinal plants find application in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural and food industry. The use of the medicinal herbs for curing disease has been documented in history of all civilizations. With the onset of research, it was concluded that plants contain active principles, which are responsible, for curative action of the herbs. Ayurvedic drugs are used in crude forms like expressed juice, powder, decoction or infusion. Ancient healers, developed formulations based on medicinal herbs, were probably not aware about the chemical composition of the herbs. But the advancement they made despite non-availability of scientific procedures is astonishing. Scientific research has proved …

Ethnobotanical Study Of Galliyat For Botanical Demography And Bio-Ecological Diversification, Muhammad Arshad, Mushtaq Ahmad Jan 2005

Ethnobotanical Study Of Galliyat For Botanical Demography And Bio-Ecological Diversification, Muhammad Arshad, Mushtaq Ahmad

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The present research work was based on the results of an enthnobotanical research project conducted in the Galliyat areas of North-West Frontier Province (Pakistan) during July 2003-March 2004. The region is mountainous with pine forests. Botanists have rarely studied the remote villages of the area, hence ethnobotanical information is quite meager. The local people of the area have always used surrounding natural resources, that is wild plants, for medicinal purposes and have for a long time depended on the surrounding plant sources for their food, shelter, fodder, timber, fuel and health care. The present study mainly focuses on the information …

Plea Bargaining At The International Criminal Tribunal For The Former Yugoslavia, Ralph Henham, Mark Drumbl Jan 2005

Plea Bargaining At The International Criminal Tribunal For The Former Yugoslavia, Ralph Henham, Mark Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) increasingly has turned to plea bargains to resolve the cases before it. A number of factors motor this trend. One is administrative: the ICTY has been subject to considerable pressure from the United Nations Security Council and donor states to accelerate its work. Another is the desire to obtain acknowledgements of responsibility from perpetrators. Moreover, there is concern that, as time passes, the memories of witnesses dim. The rigours of direct and cross-examination may retraumatise those who have survived mass atrocity. ICTY judges also have expressed their understanding that guilty pleas …

2005 Louisiana Summary: Agriculture And Natural Resources, Lsu Agcenter

Louisiana Summary: Agriculture and Natural Resources

This book tabulates the value of Louisiana agriculture in 2005. Agents and specialists of the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, as well as other agencies – both private and public – compiled the statistics. Their analysis focuses on the animal, forestry, fisheries, plant and wildlife commodities that comprise our vital agricultural industry. The agricultural industry continues to contribute significantly to the state’s economy with the potential for increased benefits through value-added processing.

In 2005, Louisiana farmers, foresters, fishermen and ranchers faced unprecedented challenges associated with hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Although the devastation and destruction caused by the two storms definitely have …

Marine Radiations At Small Geographic Scales: Speciation In Neotropical Reef Gobies (Elacatinus), Michael S. Taylor, Michael E. Hellberg Jan 2005

Marine Radiations At Small Geographic Scales: Speciation In Neotropical Reef Gobies (Elacatinus), Michael S. Taylor, Michael E. Hellberg

Faculty Publications

Studies of speciation in the marine environment have historically compared broad-scale distributions and estimated larval dispersal potential to infer the geographic barriers responsible for allopatric speciation. However, many marine clades show high species diversity in geographically restricted areas where barriers are not obvious and estimated dispersal potential should bring many sister taxa into contact. Genetic differentiation at small (separation <1000 >km) spatial scales could facilitate speciation by mechanisms other than the gradual accumulation of reproductive isolation during extended allopatry, such as ecological adaptation to local environmental conditions or the rapid evolution of genes tied to mate recognition, but the role of …

Potential For Including A Sustainable Rural Development Function In The Conservation Security Program, Jean Michel Basquin Jan 2005

Potential For Including A Sustainable Rural Development Function In The Conservation Security Program, Jean Michel Basquin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Agri-environmental policy and rural development efforts in the United States do not always seem to operate on common ground, although the United States Department of Agriculture oversees some aspects of both of them. Both efforts target activities taking place in rural communities. The primary aim of this thesis is to see how the Conservation Security Program (C S P) of the 2002 Farm Bill might foster sustainable rural development by using specific strategies. The CSP is compared to France's Contrat Territorial d' Exploitation. Based on the findings of this analysis, tentative guidelines are suggested for implementation of the C S …

Home-Range Size, Response To Fire, And Habitat Preferences Of Wintering Henslow's Sparrows, Catherine L. Bechtoldt, Philip C. Stouffer Jan 2005

Home-Range Size, Response To Fire, And Habitat Preferences Of Wintering Henslow's Sparrows, Catherine L. Bechtoldt, Philip C. Stouffer

Faculty Publications

Henslow's Sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii) is a declining, disturbance-dependent grassland bird that winters in the longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) ecosystem of the southeastern United States. During two winters (2001, 2002), we estimated the relative abundances, movement patterns, and habitat associations of Henslow's Sparrows wintering in habitat patches differing in time since last burn (burn treatment). We conducted our study in southeastern Louisiana in Andropogon spp.-dominated longleaf pine savanna habitat. Henslow's Sparrows were most abundant in savannas burned the previous growing season, with a mean relative abundance of 2.6 individuals/ha. The most dramatic decline occurred between burn year 0 and year 1 …

Role Of The Posterior Vacuole In Spraguea Lophii (Microsporidia) Spore Hatching, Ann M. Findley, Earl H. Weidner, Kevin R. Carman, Zhimin Xu, J. Samuel Godbar Jan 2005

Role Of The Posterior Vacuole In Spraguea Lophii (Microsporidia) Spore Hatching, Ann M. Findley, Earl H. Weidner, Kevin R. Carman, Zhimin Xu, J. Samuel Godbar

Faculty Publications

Microsporidia constitute a large group of obligate intracellular protozoan parasites that inject themselves into host cells via the extrusion apparatus of the infective spore stage. Although the injection process is poorly understood, its energy source is thought to reside in the posterior vacuole that swells significantly during spore firing. Here we report the presence and localisation of the key peroxisomal enzymes catalase and acyl-CoA oxidase (ACOX) within the posterior vacuole of Spraguea lophii (Doflein, 1898) spores. Western blot analyses show that these enzymes discharge out of the spore and end up in the medium external to the extruded sporoplasms. The …

Theory Of Mind In Chimpanzees: A Rationalist Approach, Benjamin Grant Purzycki Jan 2005

Theory Of Mind In Chimpanzees: A Rationalist Approach, Benjamin Grant Purzycki

Nebraska Anthropologist

The question of whether or not chimpanzees possess the ability to mentally represent others' mental states has been a popular question since Premack and Woodruff (1978) originally asked the question. It is well established that humans have a theory of mind (ToM), but extending this psychological faculty to our evolutionary cousins has created a massive amount of literature and research attempting to resolve this issue. Such a resolution is arguably not possible given the nature of the debate. An Either/Or approach to chimpanzee theory of mind both ignores the essential components of ToM as well as foreclosing on the possibility …
