Synthesis And Evaluation Of New Cathepsin D Inhibitors, Rose M. Mcconnell, Walter E. Godwin, Kelley Sayyer, Carol Trana, Adam Green, Matthew Mcconnell, Ashley Young, Lauren Young, Susan E. Hatfield

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Cathepsin D, a lysosomal aspartic protease, has been suggested to play a role in the metastatic potential of several types of cancer A high activated cathepsin D level in breast tumor tissue has been associated with an increased incidence of relapse and metastasis. High levels of active cathepsin D have also been found in colon cancer, prostate cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. Hydroxyethyl isosteres with cyclic tertiary amine have proven to be clinically useful as inhibitors of aspartyl proteases, such as cathepsin D and the HIV1 aspartyl protease. Also cathepsin D has recently been associated with the development of …

Seasonal Incidence Of Sperm Within The Spermathecae Of Ouachita Dusky Salamanders (Desmognathus Brimleyorum) In Arkansas, Stanley E. Trauth, Michelle N. Mary

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We examined 91 adult female Ouachita dusky salamanders {Desmognathus brimleyorum) to determine the seasonal incidence of sperm within spermathecae. The spermatheca (sperm storage gland) along with supporting tissue was removed from the dorsal cloacal wall of each female and prepared for light microscopy. We recorded the reproductive condition of females (diameter of enlarged ovarian follicles =EOF) and found large aggregates of sperm within the spermathecae during all months, except February (no specimens available). The highest incidence of sperm in spermathecae occurred in July specimens (53%; n = 17). Although the known nesting season runs from July into August in this …

The Current State Of The Gynecological Health Of Missouri Women And The Promotion Of Women's Health Issues In St. Charles County, Missouri, Tina Chapman Jan 2005

The Current State Of The Gynecological Health Of Missouri Women And The Promotion Of Women's Health Issues In St. Charles County, Missouri, Tina Chapman

Theses

This thesis will focus on the current state of women's gynecological health in Missouri and the importance of raising the awareness of health issues among a targeted population of women in St. Charles County.

Compared to national averages, women living in Missouri suffer higher infection rates of certain sexually transmitted diseases as well as higher rates of cervical cancer. Since hundreds of thousands of women do not receive annual exan1inations that would detect these conditions, it is clear that a public information campaign is desperately needed. This project attempts to develop such a campaign.

The campaign will focus on St. …

The Importance Of The Chorus In Blood Wedding, Myrna Julia Castro Rios Jan 2005

The Importance Of The Chorus In Blood Wedding, Myrna Julia Castro Rios

Theses

This Master in Fine Arts thesis, authored by Myrna Julia Castro Rios, explores the significance of the chorus in Federico García Lorca's Blood Wedding, focusing on its role within the play and its relationship to Greek drama traditions. The study delves into Lorca’s biography, his poetic style, and the symbolic imagery that infuses his work, particularly in the depiction of the chorus. Drawing parallels to the chorus of Greek tragedies, the thesis highlights how Lorca adapted its narrative and symbolic functions to create a unique element in Blood Wedding.

Castro recounts her directorial process, from pre-production research and …

Combined Alterations, Travis James Fullerton Jan 2005

Combined Alterations, Travis James Fullerton

Theses and Dissertations

The world around us is in constant flux. The photographs we make of the world, no matter how true or untrue, have a direct influence on how we perceive the environment around us. Photography serves to categorize our perceptions of the world. The value of an image is not in what it represents, but in what it recalls. Photographs are fragmented and clear, imperfect and idealized all at the same time.

Evaluation Of Techniques For The Assessment Of Biomarker Responses In Selected Molluscs And Crustaceans For In Situ Environmental Assessment, Robert John Wedderburn Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Techniques For The Assessment Of Biomarker Responses In Selected Molluscs And Crustaceans For In Situ Environmental Assessment, Robert John Wedderburn

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

There is a constant and increasing need for sensitive and relevant information regarding the effects of the chronic exposure of coastal and marine ecosystems to anthropogenically derived chemicals and stressors. If these environments are to be preserved and maintained then an increased availability of techniques to aid in the understanding of pollutant effect will be of significant advantage. This work examines the use of a suite of biomarkers of marine pollution exposure and effect to determine environmental quality and the effect of pollutants on marine organisms. The aim is to examine the sensitivity of a range of techniques and their …

Mechanical Properties Of Hoof Horn, Sole Haemorrhage And Lameness In Dairy Cattle, Betina Winkler Jan 2005

Mechanical Properties Of Hoof Horn, Sole Haemorrhage And Lameness In Dairy Cattle, Betina Winkler

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The present study aimed to develop a method to measure changes in the mechanical properties of the sole and white line hoof horn that should be used in vivo and to examine the hypothesis that the presence of haemorrhages in the horn would represent a weakening of the structural strength of the horn. Hoof horn samples were collected from the sole and white line areas of the hoof horn of dairy cattle. The maximum punch force, work to fracture, elastic modulus and membrane stress were measured through the use of a punch test and the elastic modulus was measured through …

The Role Of Biological Interactions In Modifying The Effects Of Climate Change On Intertidal Assemblages, Phillipa Jane Moore Jan 2005

The Role Of Biological Interactions In Modifying The Effects Of Climate Change On Intertidal Assemblages, Phillipa Jane Moore

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The geographic distribution of most species is expected to alter as a consequence of global climate change. Predictions for the extent of these range shifts are frequently based on anticipated changes in temperature using a 'climate envelope' approach, which oversimplifies predictions because it does not consider interactions with other physical and biological factors. The aim of this thesis was to investigate how biological interactions modulate species responses to climate change. On many rocky shores in the NE Atlantic the interaction between limpets, barnacles and canopy forming macroalgae have an important role in structuring rocky shore communities. In particular, limpets control …

Analytical And Synthetic Methods For Anatoxins., Janet Crowley Jan 2005

Analytical And Synthetic Methods For Anatoxins., Janet Crowley

Theses

This thesis is focused on the potent cyanobacterial neurotoxins anatoxin-a (AN), its methyl analogue homoanatoxin-a (HMAN) and their non-toxic dihydro- and epoxydegradation products. In commencing the investigation into this area a literature review was performed in order to identify areas where more research and method development was required (Chapter 1). The review highlighted the fact that although a number of analytical methods had been developed for the analysis of AN, there were few methods for the determination of its potent homologue HMAN and their non-toxic degradation products. As these neurotoxins degrade quickly it is important to monitor their degradation products, …

Validation Of An Immunomagnetic-Electrochemiluminescence Detection System For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli 0157 In Food And Comparison With An Iso Standard Method, Eimear Carney Jan 2005

Validation Of An Immunomagnetic-Electrochemiluminescence Detection System For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli 0157 In Food And Comparison With An Iso Standard Method, Eimear Carney

Theses

Rapid and sensitive methods for detecting Escherichia coli 0157 in contaminated food, water and other biological samples are important in limiting and preventing the spread of this pathogen. Traditional culture based methods for bacterial identification and detection can be time consuming and labour intensive. Modem alternative methods should be faster whilst maintaining sensitivity. Immunomagnetic separation (IMS) methodology has been investigated and appears promising for rapid bacterial detection in unrelated food and environmental samples. In this study, a commercial sensor which combined IMS with electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was evaluated for the detection of E. coli 0157 in unrelated food matrices. Emitted signals …

Marginalisation And Reservation In India: An Analysis In The Light Of Rawlsian Theories Of Justice And Equality, Sameer Pandit Jan 2005

Marginalisation And Reservation In India: An Analysis In The Light Of Rawlsian Theories Of Justice And Equality, Sameer Pandit

Socio-Legal Review

In this article the author applies the Rawlsian principles of justice, which lay down a theory of fair equality of opportunity, to examine the Indian reservation policy. Both, in principle, seek to mitigate the arbitrariness of birth and provide individuals with an 'equal start' in life. Although reservations seem justified from a theoretical angle, the historical politicisation of caste has led to the distortion of the policy from being one that seeks to promote equality to a policy that preserves social inequalities and hierarchies. This has been one of the major causes that have prevented the envisioned objectives of the …

Dietary Supplements And Sports Performance: Minerals, Melvin H. Williams Jan 2005

Dietary Supplements And Sports Performance: Minerals, Melvin H. Williams

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Minerals are essential for a wide variety of metabolic and physiologic processes in the human body. Some of the physiologic roles of minerals important to athletes are their involvement in: muscle contraction, normal hearth rhythm, nerve impulse conduction, oxygen transport, oxidative phosphorylation, enzyme activation, immune functions, antioxidant activity, bone health, and acid-base balance of the blood. The two major classes of minerals are the macrominerals and the trace elements. The scope of this article will focus on the ergogenic theory and the efficacy of such mineral supplementation. Grassland And Woodland Bird Occurrence And Habitat Selection In The Prairie-Forest Transition Zone Of Minnesota, Thomas Robert Cooper Jan 2005

Grassland And Woodland Bird Occurrence And Habitat Selection In The Prairie-Forest Transition Zone Of Minnesota, Thomas Robert Cooper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous species of woodland and grassland nesting birds have experienced population declines in the midwestern United States. Habitat loss and habitat fragmentation are suspected to be two of the underlying causes for the population declines of woodland and grassland birds. The Minnesota Valley Wetland Management District (WMD) covers 14 counties in southeastern Minnesota in the transition zone between forested and prairie ecoregions. Little information is available relative to which birds are using grassland or woodland habitat within the WMD and how their presence or absence is related to the available habitat conditions. Therefore, my study objectives were to: 1) determine …

Property Mosaic And State-Making: Governmentality, Expropriation And Conservation In The Pyrenees, Ismael Vaccaro Jan 2005

Property Mosaic And State-Making: Governmentality, Expropriation And Conservation In The Pyrenees, Ismael Vaccaro

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This article identifies the current explosion of conservation policies in the Pyrenees as the most recent wave of a long-standing tradition of state-driven territorial policies. The very existence of these policies cannot be understood without taking into account the consequences of two hundred years of territorial rationalization, land expropriation and natural resource control. Depopulation, agricultural involution and forest recovery are partial consequences, not necessarily intended, of the expansion of the modern Spanish state. In addition to identifying a similar ideological background for the four phases of the model presented here (municipalization, disentailment, expropriation and parks implementation), I also argue that …

Migration And Home Gardens In The Brahmaputra Valley, Assam, India, Rahul J. Shrivastava, Joel T. Heinen

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The Brahmaputra is the largest river system in northeast India. Its valley, in the State of Assam, is home to the Assamese people, indigenous Mishing and Karbi tribes, and Kaziranga National Park. A spectacular array of wildlife shares the floodplain including the endangered Asian elephant, tiger, one-horned rhinoceros and wild buffalo. The fertile floodplain and tea estates have attracted immigrants from within India and from neighboring countries. Migration has been linked to Assam's high population density and agriculture expansion. Based on household surveys in 37 villages in the park's periphery, we compared home garden productivity and economic return among residents …
