History Of The Beef Teaching Herd Of The Animal Science Department, University Of Nebraska, James A. Gosey

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The first mention of beef cattle used for instruction of students at the University of Nebraska was about 1874 according to Professor Wm. J. Loeffel’s written history of “Animal Husbandry Through the Years at the University of Nebraska.” While the University was founded in 1869, and the College of Agriculture was established in 1872, it wasn’t until 1874 that the “college farm” was purchased at the current location of the UNL East Campus for $55 per acre. Some livestock was maintained on the college farm during the years 1875 to 1890, but the number was quite small. The Board of …

Optimal Wet Corn Gluten And Protein Levels In Steam-Flaked Corn-Based Finishing Diets For Steer Calves, H. C. Block, C. N. Macken, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Rick Stock Jan 2005

Optimal Wet Corn Gluten And Protein Levels In Steam-Flaked Corn-Based Finishing Diets For Steer Calves, H. C. Block, C. N. Macken, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Rick Stock

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A feeding trial evaluated the hypothesis that wet corn gluten feed would improve growth performance of cattle fed steam-flaked corn-based finishing diets and supply required degradable intake protein (DIP). The trial used 360 steer calves (initial BW = 288 ± 11 kg) housed in 36 pens for 166 d in an incomplete 4 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments. Pens of steers were assigned to treatments according to a completely randomized design (four replicates per treatment combination). Treatments were wet corn gluten feed (0, 20, 30, or 40% of dietary DM) and CP (13.0, 13.7, or 14.4% of dietary DM) …

Incorporating Children's Literature In The Classroom : A First Grade Interdisciplinary Unit, Tiffany Gilchrist

Honors Capstones

The goal of this research is to investigate and demonstrate the importance of using a balanced literacy program in a primary level classroom. This is done through readalouds, shared readings, guided readings, independent readings, and extension activities all based on quality children's literature. This research paper was designed around the specific investigation of each of the individual components of a balanced literacy program, and how those components are interrelated. It was found that students who are immersed in reading activities through this type of program become stronger lifelong readers. They enjoy reading more and are better at it. All reading …

Voice Track Computer Based Simulation For Medical Training, Alpesh Purshottam Makwana Jan 2005

Voice Track Computer Based Simulation For Medical Training, Alpesh Purshottam Makwana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Varying the delivery rate of audio-based text within web-based training increases the effectiveness of the learning process and improves retention when compared with a fixed audio-based text delivery rate. To answer this question, two groups of 20 participants and one group of 10 participants were tested using the Web-based Anatomy & Physiology course modules developed by Medsn, Inc. The control group received the static speed of 128 words per minute while the experimental group received the initial speed of 128 words per minute with the option to change the speed of the audio-based text. An additional experimental group received the …

Small Fish Species Of Arkansas Reservoirs, Thomas M. Buchanan Jan 2005

Small Fish Species Of Arkansas Reservoirs, Thomas M. Buchanan

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Sixty-six Arkansas reservoirs were sampled with rotenone from 1997 through 2004 to determine the distribution and species richness of small, nongame fish species in manmade lentic environments. Eighty-five small fish species distributed among 13 families were collected. Fish distribution and species richness varied by reservoir size, ecoregion, and reservoir type. Species richness was significantly correlated with reservoir size and the number of small species occurring in reservoir drainages. Some small species apparently maintained breeding populations in reservoirs, other species occurred in low numbers and may not have maintained breeding populations, and some species occurred sporadically, probably as stragglers from nearby …

Distribution Of Bats In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of The Arkansas Delta Region, H. Bobby Fokidis, Stephen C. Brandebura, Thomas S. Risch Jan 2005

Distribution Of Bats In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of The Arkansas Delta Region, H. Bobby Fokidis, Stephen C. Brandebura, Thomas S. Risch

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Bat distribution data is incomplete for the delta region of Arkansas. We extensively surveyed 16 counties within the Mississippi alluvial plain that comprises the delta from late spring to early fall 2004 using mist nets. We obtained 44 new county records for 9 species: Myotis lucifigus, M. austroriparius, Pipistrellus subflavus, Eptesicus fuscus, Lasiurus seminolus, L. borealis, L. cinereus, Nycticeius humeralis, and Corynorhinus rafinesquii. We generated updated distribution maps for these species and eastward Arkansas range expansions were documented for L.seminolus. Possible sampling concerns and research directions are discussed in relation to the needs of bats inhabiting bottomland forests of the …

Annotated Checklist Of The Amphipoda Of Arkansas With Emphasis Upon Groundwater Habitats, G. O. Graening, Michael E. Slay, John R. Holsinger

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Based on recent collections and review of the literature, 20 species of freshwater amphipod crustaceans are listed from the state of Arkansas. Included are species from the families Allocrangonyctidae, Crangonyctidae, Gammaridae and Hyalellidae and the genera Allocrangonyx, Bactrurus, Crangonyx, Stygobromus, Gammarus, and Hyalella. Ten of the species are restricted to subterranean groundwaters, 2 are closely associated with groundwater but also occur in surface waters, and 8 are known primarily from surface waters. Two of the species are in the process of being described in the literature, whereas 2 remain only provisionally recognized to date. On the basis of this new …

Distribution And Status Of The Kiamichi Shiner, Nottropis Ortenburgeri Hubbs (Cyprinidae), Henry W. Robison

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Kiamichi shiner, Notropis ortenburgeri, a diminuitive, silvery, upland stream fish in southwestern Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma was studied from 1999-2001 to determine its distribution, habitat, and conservation status in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Eighty-five collections were made during the two-year study. The present distribution in Arkansas and Oklahoma is described as well as the conservation status of the Kiamichi shiner in both states.
