Geographic Distribution Of The Southeast Asian Turtles In The Genus Malayemys (Testudines: Bataguridae), Timothy R. Brophy

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Members of the genus Malayemys, Malayan snail-eating turtles, are small batagurid turtles reaching maximum sizes of 22 cm carapace length (Srinarumol, 1995). They have dark brown to mahogany carapaces with three discontinuous keels, yellow plastra with large dark blotches on each scute, and large black heads adorned with yellow or cream-colored stripes that extend onto their necks (Ernst et al., 2000). Malayemys inhabit lowland freshwater habitats throughout Southeast Asia including ponds, canals, streams, swamps, marshes and wet rice fields. These are diurnal bottom dwellers that feed primarily on mollusks (Smith, 1931; Taylor, 1970; Nutaphand, 1979; Srinarumol, 1995; Ernst et al., …

Environmental Justice In A Dryland Democracy: A Comment On Water Basin Institutions, Eileen Gauna Jan 2005

Environmental Justice In A Dryland Democracy: A Comment On Water Basin Institutions, Eileen Gauna

Faculty Book Display Case

This comment to Dryland Democracy (Prof. Janet Neuman, in Dusting Off the Blueprint for a Dryland Democracy: Incorporating Watershed Integrity and Water Availability Into Land Use Decisions (Dryland Democracy)) will expand upon the theme of social costs, exploring how Professor Neuman's basic proposal-water basin institutions with centralized authority-might address some of these inequities. There are not only serious environmental justice issues that must be addressed by a water basin institution, but there are also special complications that would arise during the initial process of consolidating authority. Before that discussion proceeds, however, a brief history of the environmental justice movement is …

The Study Of Religion And The Rise Of Atheism: Conflict Or Confirmation?, Michael J. Buckley S.J. Jan 2005

The Study Of Religion And The Rise Of Atheism: Conflict Or Confirmation?, Michael J. Buckley S.J.

Religious Studies

'Religion' and 'theology' are not terms with fixed meanings and invariant applications. They are rather copies or commonplaces - not in the sense of the familiar and the trite, but in the classical sense of linguistic variables, terms ambiguous and capacious enough to house a vast diversity of meanings, arguments, and referents.1 The interconnection of such topics constitutes neither a determined problem nor an exact proposition. It constitutes what John Dewey called 'a problematic situation', an indeterminate area out of which problems and their resolutions can emerge only if these ambiguous terms are given specific meanings and definite applications …

Dracula And The Afterlife: A Psychological Explanation, Jack D. Maser Jan 2005

Dracula And The Afterlife: A Psychological Explanation, Jack D. Maser

Journal of Dracula Studies

Until relatively recently, the primary psychological approach to understanding Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the folklore of vampires has been psychoanalysis. Maurice Richardson asserted in 1956 that Dracula must be seen from a Freudian standpoint, since “from no other does the story really make any sense” (427). However, the psychoanalytic approach shares little with modern, scientifically based psychology. Fascinating though it may be, psychoanalytic theory has almost no measurable attributes and may itself be as mythical as vampires and an afterlife. Rather, psychoanalysis is a creative theory of human cognition and behavior that can be neither proven false, objectively replicated, nor …

Prophylactic Efficacy Of Crushed Garlic Lobes, Black Seed Or Olive Oils On Cholinesterase Activity In Central Nervous System Parts And Serum Of Lead Intoxicated Rabbits, Maged M. Yassin Jan 2005

Prophylactic Efficacy Of Crushed Garlic Lobes, Black Seed Or Olive Oils On Cholinesterase Activity In Central Nervous System Parts And Serum Of Lead Intoxicated Rabbits, Maged M. Yassin

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effect of lead on cholinesterase activity in various central nervous system (CNS) parts and in serum, and the potential of crushed fresh garlic lobes, black seed and olive oils to combat lead poisoning in rabbits were assessed. Oral administration of lead acetate elevated BLL compared to control and sodium acetate groups. This increase was a function of the experimental time. Treatment of animals with crushed fresh garlic lobes, black seed or olive oils lowered BLL, with garlic was the most effective. Lead caused progressive decrease in the activity of acetylcholinesterase in different brain regions and spinal cord allover the …
