The Conservation Security Program: A New Conservation Program That Rewards Historic Land Stewards Who Have Applied And Managed Effective Conservation Systems, Hank Henry
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The Conservation Security Program (CSP) is a voluntary program that provides financial and technical assistance to promote the conservation and improvement of soil, water, air, energy, plant and animal life, and other conservation purposes on tribal and private working lands. Working lands include cropland, grassland, prairie land, improved pasture, and rangeland, as well as forested land that is an incidental part of an agriculture operation. In the first sign-up, CSP was offered in 18 watersheds located in 22 states. In 2005, the program is available in all 50 states, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Basin. The program provides equitable access …

The Myth Of Nature And The Nature Of Myth: Becoming Transparent To Transcendence, Dennis P. Slattery
The Myth Of Nature And The Nature Of Myth: Becoming Transparent To Transcendence, Dennis P. Slattery
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The works by the American mythologist, Joseph Campbell, as well as the poetry of John Keats,
especially his “Ode to a Nightingale,” offer new ways to reimagine our relation to the earth, to
the dead and to language’s continued vitality. Beginning with a brief overview of some of the
major tenets of Campbell’s guiding force of the “monomyth,” which gathers all the various world
mythologies as inflections of one universal story, the essay then moves into a discussion of Keats’
poem in order to reveal the power of poetic utterance in reconfiguring a vital mythology. If there
is to be …

On Location: Theory And Practice In Classroom-Based Writing Tutoring, Candace Spigelman, Laurie Grobman
On Location: Theory And Practice In Classroom-Based Writing Tutoring, Candace Spigelman, Laurie Grobman
All USU Press Publications
Classroom-based writing tutoring is a distinct form of writing support, a hybrid instructional method that engages multiple voices and texts within the college classroom. Tutors work on location in the thick of writing instruction and writing activity. On Location is the first volume to discuss this emerging practice in a methodical way. The essays in this collection integrate theory and practice to highlight the alliances and connections on-location tutoring offers while suggesting strategies for resolving its conflicts. Contributors examine classroom-based tutoring programs located in composition courses as well as in writing intensive courses across the disciplines. While earlier scholarship has …

Access And Allocation Arrangements For The Commercial 'Wetline' Fisheries. Proposals For Discussion., Commercial Access Panel
Access And Allocation Arrangements For The Commercial 'Wetline' Fisheries. Proposals For Discussion., Commercial Access Panel
Fisheries Management Papers
The Minister for Fisheries established this review of open access (wetline) commercial fishery arrangements to provide a more effective management framework for wetline fishing and to complement the recreational initiatives. This must involve the removal of excess fishing capacity, including latent effort, from the fishery and the establishment of a dedicated commercial fishery with clear entry criteria and an appropriate limit on catch in each bioregion. However it must be made clear that the ‘wetline review’ is not a sectoral resource sharing exercise. Following the implementation of new management arrangements for the ‘wetline’ fisheries, the appropriateness of the existing levels …

Proposed Management Arrangements For The West Coast Commercial 'Wetline' Fishery. A Discussion Paper., West Coast And Gascoyne Management Planning Panel
Fisheries Management Papers
The ‘Wetline Review’ was established to implement an effective management framework for the commercial sector to complement the recreational initiatives. It must be stressed at the outset that this review is focussed on the take of scalefish by the commercial sector. The levels of use between the various user groups in the West Coast region will be examined under the new integrated fisheries initiative following the implementation of new management arrangements for scalefish taken by the commercial sector.

An Assessment Of The Use Of Botanical Extracts And Pheromes For The Off-Host And On-Host Control Of Amblyomma Variegatum Tick, Alioune Toure
All PhD Dissertations
The livestock tropical bont tick, Amblyomma variegatum Fabricius, is a pest of major economic importance in Africa where it is the vector of Cowdria ruminantium that causes Headwater, disease in cattle. Its control has relied mainly on commercial acaricides, which have many problems associated with, environmental pollution, development of resistant strains of ticks against acaricides and escalating costs. It has, therefore, become necessary to look for alternative methods of tick control, which are environmentally friendly, relatively cheap and which involve farmers directly. In this regard, the purpose of this study investigated the potential of pheromones in attracting ticks to a …
Studies On The Midgut Lectin Gene Of Glossina Austeni, Daniel Ndem Amin
Studies On The Midgut Lectin Gene Of Glossina Austeni, Daniel Ndem Amin
All PhD Dissertations
Trypanosomiasis continues to be a serious problem in sub-Saharan Africa. The inadequacies of existing control strategies necessitate the development of alternative control measures. In most cases, the causative agents of African trypanosomiasis, Trypanosoma spp., require an obligatory passage through the tsetse, Glossina spp (Diptera; Glossinidae ), vector. This developmental step of the parasite leads to vector-parasite interactions, especially within the midgut. Among the vector molecules highly implicated in the interplay are carbohydrate-binding proteins known as lectins. This thesis describes studies on the midgut proteolytic lectin of Glossina austeni. The purification of a proteolytic lectin from the midgut homogenate of G. …

Psychosocial Treatment Of Children In Foster Care: A Review, Robert Racusin, Arthur C. Maerlender, Anjana Sengupta, Peter K. Isquith, Martha B. Straus
Psychosocial Treatment Of Children In Foster Care: A Review, Robert Racusin, Arthur C. Maerlender, Anjana Sengupta, Peter K. Isquith, Martha B. Straus
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
A substantial number of children in foster care exhibit psychiatric difficulties. Recent epidemiologi-cal and historical trends in foster care, clinical findings about the adjustment of children in foster care, and adult outcomes are reviewed, followed by a description of current approaches to treatment and extant empirical support. Available interventions for these children can be categorized as either symptom-focused or systemic, with empirical support for specific methods ranging from scant to substantial. Even with treatment, behavioral and emotional problems often persist into adulthood, resulting in poor functional outcomes. We suggest that self-regulation may be an important mediat-ing factor in the appearance …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
Pseudomonas syringae is a gram-negative bacterial plant pathogen that is dependent on a type III protein secretion system (TTSS) and the effector proteins it translocates into plant cells for pathogenicity. The P. syringae TTSS is encoded by hrp-hrc genes that reside in a central region of a pathogenicity island (Pai). Flanking one side of this Pai is the exchangeable effector locus (EEL). We characterized the transcriptional expression of the open reading frames (ORFs) within the EEL of P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000. One of these ORFs, PSPTO1406 (hopB1) is expressed in the same transcriptional unit as hrpK. …

Folate Synthesis And Metabolism In Plants And Prospects For Biofortification, Gilles J. C. Basset, Eoin P. Quinlivan, Jesse F. Gregory Iii, Andrew D. Hanson
Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
Folates are essential cofactors for one-carbon transfer reactions in most living organisms and are required for the biosynthesis of nucleic acids, amino acids, and pantothenate. Unlike plants and microorganisms, humans cannot synthesize folates de novo and must acquire them from the diet, primarily from plant foods. However, lack of folates is the most common vitamin deficiency in the world and has serious health consequences, including increased risk of neural tube defects in infants, cancers, and vascular diseases. Consequently, there is much interest in engineering plants with enhanced folate content (biofortification). In this review, we outline progress in defining the plant …
