Digital Image Processing, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2005

Digital Image Processing, Jonathan Blackledge

Books/Book chapters

Newspapers and the popular scientific press today publish many examples of highly impressive images. These images range, for example, from those showing regions of star birth in the distant Universe to the extent of the stratospheric ozone depletion over Antarctica in springtime, and to those regions of the human brain affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Processed digitally to generate spectacular images, often in false colour, they all make an immediate and deep impact on the viewer’s imagination and understanding.

Professor Jonathan Blackledge’s erudite but very useful new treatise Digital Image Processing: Mathematical and Computational Methods explains both the underlying theory and …

Spatial Analysis Of Urban Stormwater Quality Jan 2005

Spatial Analysis Of Urban Stormwater Quality

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Urban stormwater non-point source pollutants are recognized as a major cause of receiving waters quality deterioration. To date most research has focused on specifying temporal variations of stormwater quality parameters which includes high uncertainties and also increases the risk of pollution control structures failure. Traditionally, the temporal variations of quality parameters in forms of either pollutograph or Event Mean Concentration (EMC) is obtained by sampling stormwater at the outlet of urban catchments for quality analysis in addition to measurement of flow rate over years. Spatial variations of the runoff quality are the key factor in non-point source pollution studies. This …

Small-Scale Biodiesel Production: A Feasibility Study, Isabel Call Jan 2005

Small-Scale Biodiesel Production: A Feasibility Study, Isabel Call

Honors Papers

The objective of the research presented in this paper is the development of cost curves for small-scale biodiesel production and a comparison of relevant technologies. The three technologies considered are the biodiesel pilot plant at the Iowa Energy Center's Biomass Energy Conversion Center, the commercially-sold Fuelmeister, and the bicycle-powered machine currently under development by students at Oberlin College. The price of biodiesel at which production via these technologies becomes profitable and the relative profitability of each will be determined through the use of a linear program. The importance of resource recovery and energy efficiency and the use of recycled feedstocks …

Responses Of Coccidia-Vaccinated Broilers To Essential Oil Blends Supplementation Up To Forty-Nine Days Of Age, E. O. Oviedo Rondon, S. Clemente-Hernandez, P. Williams, R. Losa Jan 2005

Responses Of Coccidia-Vaccinated Broilers To Essential Oil Blends Supplementation Up To Forty-Nine Days Of Age, E. O. Oviedo Rondon, S. Clemente-Hernandez, P. Williams, R. Losa

Faculty Publications

Coccidiosis control may become a greater problem as the use of growth-promoting antibiotics (GPA) and ionophores declines. Vaccination with live oocysts may turn into a popular alternative to the use of coccidiostats in broilers, although cocci vaccination is frequently linked to temporary lower performance in young flocks. This experiment evaluates the dietary supplementation of 2 specific essential oil (EO) blends (Crina Poultry and Crina Alternate), either as alternatives to GPA and ionophores (BMD + Coban) or as feed additives that help to improve the performance of cocci-vaccinated broilers. Live performance and lesion scores were observed. These 2 specific EO blends …

On Democratic Personalities, Robert W. Daly Jan 2005

On Democratic Personalities, Robert W. Daly

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

In Part I, I describe and discuss the ideal traits of a democratic personality, note the contribution of education to the acquisition of these traits, and describe other immature traits of personality that impede or preclude the emergence of a democratic personality. In Part II, I note how the traits of a democratic personality are or are not acquired through the processes of identity formation in late adolescence and early adulthood. Finally, I contrast the ideal traits of a democratic personality with other traits that can frustrate attempts to develop a democracy but which can contribute to successful adaptation in …

Relationship Between Habitat Distribution, Growth Rate, And Plasticity In Congeneric Larval Dragonflies, S. J. Mccauley Jan 2005

Relationship Between Habitat Distribution, Growth Rate, And Plasticity In Congeneric Larval Dragonflies, S. J. Mccauley

Biological Sciences

The relationship between habitat distribution, growth rate, and plasticity was examined in the larvae of three species of dragonfly in the genus Libellula L., 1758. Growth rates were compared under three conditions: in the absence of predation risk, in the presence of sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque, 1819; Pisciformes: Centrachidae), and in the presence of invertebrate predators. I assessed how the habitat distributions of the three species of dragonfly, specifically how commonly they occur with fish, were related to growth rates and to the level of growth plasticity under different levels of perceived predation risk. There was a negative relationship …

Effects Of Weaning Date And Retained Ownership On Cow And Calf Performance And Forage Disappearance In Spring Calving Beef Systems, Doug G. Landblom, Hubert H. Patterson, Pat Johnson, Roger Gates, Steve Paisley, Doug Young Jan 2005

Effects Of Weaning Date And Retained Ownership On Cow And Calf Performance And Forage Disappearance In Spring Calving Beef Systems, Doug G. Landblom, Hubert H. Patterson, Pat Johnson, Roger Gates, Steve Paisley, Doug Young

South Dakota Beef Report, 2005

Researchers in North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming are working together to evaluate the effect of weaning calves 75 days earlier than normal and are following the calves through finishing. This report summarizes accomplishments so far. Briefly, weaning calves 75 days early (mid-August) has improved cow weight and condition score compared to cows whose calves were weaned normally (early-November). Native range forage disappearance has tended to be lower when calves were weaned early. After weaning, backgrounded early weaned steers grew faster and were more efficient. However, early weaned steers required 61 more days on feed to reach final harvest.

Evaluation Of Performance And Costs Of Two Heifer Development Systems, Robin R. Salverson, Hubert H. Patterson, George A. Perry, Doug Young, Matt L. Gibson Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Performance And Costs Of Two Heifer Development Systems, Robin R. Salverson, Hubert H. Patterson, George A. Perry, Doug Young, Matt L. Gibson

South Dakota Beef Report, 2005

Early weaned (EW) heifers must be developed for a longer period of time usually resulting in increased development costs. Developing EW heifers on native range may reduce these costs. Dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) offers protein and energy that compliment native forages for developing heifers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance and costs of two heifer development systems in northwest South Dakota. Sixty-five nulliparous crossbred beef heifers were randomly allotted to one of two systems: 1) heifers (n=33) weaned at 132 d of age (461 lb) and developed on range with a DDGS supplement (1.8 …

A Student-Centered Project For Earth System History, Rebecca Teed Jan 2005

A Student-Centered Project For Earth System History, Rebecca Teed

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

This project is intended to replace some of the lectures that would ordinarily be necessary in a survey of Earth history over geologic time. The students will be taking the lecturer's place in front of the class, presenting some of the material to their colleagues. Students will work in groups on a single era or period. Each student role-plays an expert (such as an oceanographer) and works with teammates playing other sorts of experts (a biologist, a geologist, an atmospheric scientist). Their presentation will require them to do research. They will be constructing resource lists to keep track of how …

Finally, defends the use of literature in writing classrooms.

Cholinergic Basal Forebrain Involvement In The Acquisition Of Differential Reinforcement Of Low Rate Responding Tasks In Rats, Sean Ryan Corley Jan 2005

Cholinergic Basal Forebrain Involvement In The Acquisition Of Differential Reinforcement Of Low Rate Responding Tasks In Rats, Sean Ryan Corley

Theses Digitization Project

It was hypothesized that 192 IgG-saporin lesions of the basal forebrain cholinergic system (BFCS) would disrupt differential reinforcement of low rate (DRL) learning in an uncued DRL task, but would not impair acquisition and performance in the cued version of the task. Results suggest that BFCS lesions impair vigilance to the external cues despite continued practice in the cued DRL, whereas continuous attention to internally produced cues recovers with extended practice in the uncued DRL.

From Darwin To Dracula: A Study Of Literary Evolution, Erin Alice Lamborn Jan 2005

From Darwin To Dracula: A Study Of Literary Evolution, Erin Alice Lamborn

Theses Digitization Project

Argues that, without the publication of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species," Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" and Oscar Wilde's novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" would not have been written with their distinct style and themes, as evolution clashes with degeneration and female power (and the sexuality derived from that power) clashes with the new science. Stoker and Wilde combine the science of the late 19th century with the characters of their imaginations. Natural and sexual selection plays a part in these characters' core development. The mixture of sexuality, science and power in these two novels all combine to formulate what …

The investigation included how often the teachers who were surveyed used WebQuests in the classroom, and what these teachers used to evaluate WebQuests. Examines whether teachers are using rubrics they had created themselves, or WebQuest rubrics that are provided for them.

The Effect Of Early Psychostimulant Treatment On Abuse Liability And Dopamine Receptors, Steven Wayne Villafranca Jan 2005

The Effect Of Early Psychostimulant Treatment On Abuse Liability And Dopamine Receptors, Steven Wayne Villafranca

Theses Digitization Project

Examines whether the reinforcing properties of drugs of abuse were altered in adulthood by methylphenidate, more commonly known as Ritalin. Subjects were 108 rats of Sprague-Dawley descent (Harlan). Methylphenidate, or saline was administered daily to the subjects from the postnatal period (11-20 days old). The rats preference for morphine during early adulthood was measured using conditioned place preference. The number of dopamine D₂ receptors was measured in each rat and the correlation between receptor number and morphine preference was determined. Results indicate that rats pretreated with methylphenidate showed greater preference for morphine than saline pretreated rats and suggests that exposure …

The Representation Of Rape In Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadias, Angela Denise Bullard Jan 2005

The Representation Of Rape In Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadias, Angela Denise Bullard

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis examines the complex and conflicting arguments surrounding the crime of rape in early modern England and how the important literary texts, Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadias, explore the issue of rape. The thesis explores Sidney's attitude toward a system that sanctioned systematic sexual violence towards women as expressed in the text; as part of this it explores the way that the text differentiates rape from seduction.
