A Comparison Of Evaluative Techniques To Improve The Reliability Of Maintenance Documentation, Bonnie Lida Rogers, Christopher J. Hamblin, Alex Chaparro

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

The purpose of this research was to investigate the applicability of usability methods in evaluating aviation maintenance documentation and to document the types of errors found. A diverse set of participants were recruited to participate in the evaluations in order to document how experience and training affect error detection. The results are similar to the findings of usability testing of software and web design – system experts and users identify unique errors and roadblocks.

Automation, Crm And Distributed Cognition: An Exploration Of The Defense Mechanism In The Cockpit, Jingnong Chen, Douglas Paluszak, Julie Silverstein Jan 2005

Automation, Crm And Distributed Cognition: An Exploration Of The Defense Mechanism In The Cockpit, Jingnong Chen, Douglas Paluszak, Julie Silverstein

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

What is the mechanism that allows aircraft flight crews to achieve such an astounding safety record despite the hazards they encounter? In this paper, we discussed the topics of aviation safety from a broad theoretical framework, which generally relate to these three topics: Automation, Crew Resource Management, and Distributed Cognition. We outline the preliminary results of a study surveying 38 reports from the Aviation Safety Reporting System. In this survey, the reports were given three classifications, the problem-based classification, the optimal-solution-based classification and the actual-solution-based classification. Some interesting findings were shown by studying the correspondences between three classifications. Based on …

Fighter Pilot Trainee Retention Of Knowledge And Skills: An Exploratory Study, Dee H. Andrews, Christopher B. Sinclair Jan 2005

Fighter Pilot Trainee Retention Of Knowledge And Skills: An Exploratory Study, Dee H. Andrews, Christopher B. Sinclair

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

An exploratory study was conducted to investigate knowledge and skill retention of foreign military fighter pilot trainees with intermediate levels of flying experience. Twenty participants completed a standardized advanced skills fighter-training program that lasted about 10 months for the first class (n=12) and eight months for the second (n=8). Following flight training, the students engaged in non-flying duties (i.e., leave, English training classes). Members of the first class did not resume flying for a minimum of eight months; the second class returned to the simulator or the flight line within three months of completing initial training. Thus, two retention intervals …

The Role Of Institutional Review Boards In Aviation Research: It's The Law And It Makes Sense, Dr. Earl S. Stein Jan 2005

The Role Of Institutional Review Boards In Aviation Research: It's The Law And It Makes Sense, Dr. Earl S. Stein

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

Research in medicine and social sciences often involves the participation of human participants, who under the rules in place today volunteer their time and understand both the benefits and risks associated with the research. This was not always the case. Rules, regulations, and laws currently require oversight by organizations referred to as Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). These boards exist to protect the participants, ensure their ethical treatment, and encourage good research. IRBs enhance the quality of research planning, and the IRB process should be part of every researcher's timeline for completion of his/her projects.

Three American Troops In Iraq: Evaluation Of A Brief Exposure Therapy Treatment For The Secondary Prevention Of Combat - Related Ptsd *, Jeffrey A. Cigrang, Alan L. Peterson, Richard P. Schobitz

School of Professional Psychology Faculty Publications

Relatively little research has been devoted to developing empirically-supported interventions for the secondary prevention of chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (i.e., for individuals who have developed PTSD symptoms but not the full PTSD disorder). One-session psychological debriefing has been routinely used as a primary preventive intervention for individuals exposed to trauma, but the appropriateness of this practice has been questioned. The authors describe an alternative, secondary prevention model of brief exposure- based treatment using three cases of military members seeking help at a forward-deployed medical clinic in Iraq for PTSD symptoms following combat -related traumas. Treatment involved repeated imaginal exposure and …

Video Games: Changing The Way We Think Of Home Entertainment, Eri Shulga

Theses

In this paper the various aspects of video games in modern day households will be discussed. According to marketing trends, video games will be extremely influential in the future of home entertainment, however not all gaming companies are able to understand the importance of this growing trend deep enough to make an effort in producing family-oriented1 video games [43, par. 2]. The need for more varied video games will be discussed in this paper and examples of successful family games will be used to solidify research conclusions.

There are issues that are clearly holding the video gaming industry back …

Perspectives On School Leadership : Taking Another Look, Thomas J. Sergiovani Jan 2005

Perspectives On School Leadership : Taking Another Look, Thomas J. Sergiovani

APC Monographs

The author argues that in many respects leadership has failed us. Not that we should be overwhelmed by this. We just need to know, so we can work on it. There are, I believe, three reasons for the failure of leadership. First, we’ve come to view leadership as behaviour, rather than action; as something psychological rather than spiritual; as having to do with persons rather than ideas. Second, in trying to understand what drives leadership, we’ve overemphasised bureaucratic and personal authority, neglecting professional and moral authority. In the first reason we separated the hand of leadership from the head and …

Conceptual Tools For Improving Self-Knowledge: V Diagrams, Concept Maps, And Time Writings, Marino C. Alvarez Jan 2005

Conceptual Tools For Improving Self-Knowledge: V Diagrams, Concept Maps, And Time Writings, Marino C. Alvarez

Teaching and Learning Faculty Research

This paper presents three metacognitive tools that enable each of us to monitor and assess our degree of self-knowledge with a given topic. V diagrams, concept maps, and time writings are presented as conceptual tools for improving self-knowledge. Self-knowledge comes about from our own individual experiences and the experiences that we glean from others. Each of these conceptual tools reveal language in one of three ways: the V shows the structure of knowledge; the concept map is a word diagram showing relationship of ideas; and, the time writing spontaneously elicits the extent, accuracy, and relevance of these ideas.

The Effects Of Infant Age On Parental Vocalizations About Object Categories In A Play-Type Setting, Katherine L. Schwartzkopf Jan 2005

The Effects Of Infant Age On Parental Vocalizations About Object Categories In A Play-Type Setting, Katherine L. Schwartzkopf

McNair Scholars Journal

Previous studies have examined the role of various perceptual features of objects on an infant’s ability to effectively categorize the object. Few, if any studies have examined the role of parents in the formation of categories early in infancy and the effect of the infants’ age on the type of categorical information provided by the parents. In two studies, parental vocalizations directed to their infants (3- to 12-months of age) about objects were videotaped and analyzed. In Study 1 the proportion of superordinate labels used by parents increased as a function of the infant’s age while the proportion of basic …

Coyote Steals Fire, Northwest Band Shoshone Nation Jan 2005

Coyote Steals Fire, Northwest Band Shoshone Nation

All USU Press Publications

"Coyote was tired of being cold," says this traditional Shoshone tale about the arrival of fire in the northern Wasatch region.

Members of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation developed the concept for this retelling in collaboration with book arts teacher Tamara Zollinger. Together, they wrote and illustrated the book.

Bright watercolor-and-salt techniques provide a winning background to the hand-cut silhouettes of the characters. The lively, humorous story about Coyote and his friends is complemented perfectly by later pages written by Northwestern Shoshone elders on the historical background and cultural heritage of the Shoshone nation.

An audio CD with …

Along Navajo Trails: Recollections Of A Trader, 1898-1948, Will Evans Jan 2005

Along Navajo Trails: Recollections Of A Trader, 1898-1948, Will Evans

All USU Press Publications

Will Evans's writings should find a special niche in the small but significant body of literature from and about traders to the Navajos. Evans was the proprietor of the Shiprock Trading Company. Probably more than most of his fellow traders, he had a strong interest in Navajo culture. The effort he made to record and share what he learned certainly was unusual. He published in the Farmington and New Mexico newspapers and other periodicals, compiling many of his pieces into a book manuscript. His subjects were Navajos he knew and traded with, their stories of historic events such as the …

Poets On Place, W. T. Pfefferle Jan 2005

Poets On Place, W. T. Pfefferle

All USU Press Publications

Out to see America and satisfy his travel bug, W. T. Pfefferle resigned from his position as director of the writing program at Johns Hopkins University and hit the road to interview sixty-two poets about the significance of place in their work. The lively conversations that resulted may surprise with the potential meanings of a seemingly simple concept. This gathering of voices and ideas is illustrated with photo and word portraits from the road and represented with suitable poems.

The poets are James Harms, David Citino, Martha Collins, Linda Gregerson, Richard Tillinghast, Orlando Ricardo Menes, Mark Strand, Karen Volkman, Lisa …

Highway 12, Christian Probasco Jan 2005

Highway 12, Christian Probasco

All USU Press Publications

Highway 12 is undoubtedly one of not only America's but the world's most scenic highways. From its intersection on the west with Highway 89 south of Panguitch, Utah, it runs up through Red Canyon onto the Paunsagunt Plateau and across Bryce Canyon National Park. It then drops into the Paria River Valley, passes through several tiny villages, crosses some extraordinary (for anywhere but this region) badlands, and descends the Escalante River into Potato Valley. While a driver may justifiably feel she has seen some scenery by that point, the highway is just getting started, for in the next stretch, it …

Medical, Racist, And Colonial Constructions Of Power In Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down, Monica E. Chiu

English

This essay looks at the values attributed or denied to "culture" (medical culture, history, Southeast Asian refugees, Asian American cultural citizenship) in the care surrounding a Hmong child diagnosed with spirit loss, according to Hmong interpretation, or epilepsy, as defined by Western medicine. In my reading of Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures, medical, colonial, and authorial knowledge often converge in devastating ways, linking the seemingly disparate discourses of war, refugee medicine, and the model minority through colonial representations. I also look at the …
