Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

While attempting to locate and evaluate prehistoric Caddo archaeological sites in the Dry Creek watershed, Wood County, Texas, that had been originally recorded by A. T. Jackson and M. M. Reese in 1930, the M. W. Burks site (41WD52) was discovered by James E. Bruseth and Bob D. Skiles in June 1977. The site is in the Forest Hill community, about 5 km north of Quitman, Texas, in the East Texas Pineywoods and Gulf Coastal Plain. It is on a small rise in the uplands overlooking a small intermittent drainage that is an unnamed tributary of Little Dry Creek.

The Pine Saddle Site (3pl1080) In The Ouachita Mountains, Polk County, Arkansas, Timothy K. Perttula, Bo Nelson

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Novaculite was procured and knapped by aboriginal Indian populations living in southwestern Arkansas for thousands of years, and there are numerous prehistoric novaculite quarries in the Ouachita Mountains. In Late Archaic times. this desirable material was widely traded and exchanged with other groups to the south, east, and west, particularly with the peoples living at the Poverty Point site and environs in the lower Mississippi valley in northern Louisiana. Later groups such as the Caddo also made considerable use of this material, since it was in their traditional homelands, and many habitation sites and mound centers in the region contain …

Journal of Marine Research

The rapidly rising levels of atmospheric and oceanic CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels has lead to well-established international concerns over dangerous anthropogenic interference with climate. Disposal of captured fossil fuel CO2 either underground, or in the deep ocean, has been suggested as one means of ameliorating this problem. While the basic thermoladynamic properties of both CO2 and seawater are well known, the problem of interaction of the two fluids in motion to create a plume of high CO2/low pH seawater has been modeled, but not tested. We describe here a novel experiment designed …

The Nonlocal Model Of Porewater Irrigation: Limits To Its Equivalence With A Cylinder Diffusion Model, Nicola J. Grigg, Bernard P. Boudreau, Ian T. Webster, Phillip W. Ford Jan 2005

The Nonlocal Model Of Porewater Irrigation: Limits To Its Equivalence With A Cylinder Diffusion Model, Nicola J. Grigg, Bernard P. Boudreau, Ian T. Webster, Phillip W. Ford

Journal of Marine Research

Burrows maintained by animals in aquatic sediments ventilate the sediment and can substantially alter the rates and pathways of biologically-mediated decomposition reactions. A well known and effective way of modeling the impact of such bioirrigation in sediment diagenetic models is to assume that solutes diffuse into an annulus of sediment surrounding the burrow; the reaction diffusion equations are represented in cylindrical polar co-ordinates. More commonly, bioirrigation of sediments is represented by one-dimensional "nonlocal" irrigation models. Their use is typically justified by the assertion that a nonlocal model is equivalent to a radially-integrated two-dimensional diffusion model in cylindrical-polar co-ordinates. In this …

Similar Rapid Response To Phytodetritus Deposition In Shallow And Deep-Sea Sediments, L. Moodley, J. J. Middelburg, K. Soetaert, H. T. S. Boschker, P. M. J. Herman, C. H. R. Heip

Journal of Marine Research

The short-term benthic response to an input of fresh organic matter was examined in vastly contrasting benthic environments (estuarine intertidal to deep-sea) using 13C-labeled diatoms as a tracer of labile carbon. Benthic processing was assessed in major compartments through 13C-enrichment in σCO2, in bacteria-specific phospholipids and in fauna tissue. A rapid response was evident in all environments. Under warm bottom water (14–18°C), similar quantities of the added carbon were respired within 24 hours in shallow and deep-sea sediments. However, the speed and magnitude of respiration were strongly reduced under low bottom water temperature (4–6°C), both in …

Solute-Specific Pore Water Irrigation: Implications For Chemical Cycling In Early Diagenesis, Christof Meile, Peter Berg, Philippe Van Cappellen, Kagan Tuncay Jan 2005

Solute-Specific Pore Water Irrigation: Implications For Chemical Cycling In Early Diagenesis, Christof Meile, Peter Berg, Philippe Van Cappellen, Kagan Tuncay

Journal of Marine Research

In one-dimensional (1D) early diagenetic models, bioirrigation is typically represented by a nonlocal mass transfer or bioirrigation coefficient, α. Usually, all pore water species are assigned the same α. Here, we show that this assumption can lead to significant errors in estimates of bioirrigation intensities. Using a simplified early diagenetic reaction network, we compute the 3D concentration fields of major pore water species around a vertical burrow, as well as the solute fluxes across the burrow wall. From these results, corresponding 1D vertical α profiles are derived. The α profiles show pronounced differences from one solute to another. Dissolved O …

Life In The Lee: Local Distributions And Orientations Of Honeycomb Worms Along The California Coast, Stacey A. Simmons, Richard K. Zimmer, Cheryl Ann Zimmer Jan 2005

Life In The Lee: Local Distributions And Orientations Of Honeycomb Worms Along The California Coast, Stacey A. Simmons, Richard K. Zimmer, Cheryl Ann Zimmer

Journal of Marine Research

In the rocky intertidal, invertebrates living in dense, intraspecific groups may be particularly important community members because they provide structural habitat for other species. Despite the prevalence of conspecific aggregates, there is scant knowledge of the proximate and ultimate causes of their distributions. Phragmatopoma californica is a gregarious, suspension-feeding tubeworm that forms extensive reefs ("honeycombs") along the California coast. Local distributions and sizes of worm aggregations, tube orientations and worm mass were quantified to identify patterns and generate hypotheses regarding potential structuring processes. Field surveys were conducted at five intertidal boulder fields in northern and southern California, spanning much of …

Diffusion Of Organic And Inorganic Solutes Through Macrofaunal Mucus Secretions And Tube Linings In Marine Sediments, Angelos K. Hannides, Shannon M. Dunn, Robert C. Aller Jan 2005

Diffusion Of Organic And Inorganic Solutes Through Macrofaunal Mucus Secretions And Tube Linings In Marine Sediments, Angelos K. Hannides, Shannon M. Dunn, Robert C. Aller

Journal of Marine Research

Transport models in sediments commonly assume that diffusion occurs through water saturated pore space and that diffusive properties are largely homogeneous and isotropic. The bioturbated zone of marine sediments is characterized by sediment pores filled with mucus gel and criss-crossed by organic membranes that line macrofaunal tubes and burrows. Diffusion experiments utilizing pedal mucus from the naticid snails, Neverita (=Polinices) duplicata and Euspira (=Lunatia) heros, and organic tube linings from the polychaetes Onuphis jenneri, Diopatra cupria, and Chaetopterus variopedatus, demonstrated that the diffusion of both organic and inorganic solutes is inhibited by …

Response Of Cow-Calf Pairs To Water High In Sulfates, Hubert Patterson, Pat Johnson, George Perry, Roger Gates, Ron Haigh Jan 2005

Response Of Cow-Calf Pairs To Water High In Sulfates, Hubert Patterson, Pat Johnson, George Perry, Roger Gates, Ron Haigh

South Dakota Beef Report, 2005

Data from our laboratory showed water sulfate levels of 3,000 ppm reduced performance and health of growing steers during summer months. In addition, water averaging 2,600 ppm in sulfates for cow-calf pairs had little impact on calf growth or milk production, but caused small reductions in cow BW and body condition score (BCS). This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of high sulfate water on cow and calf performance, milk production, and reproduction. Ninety-six crossbred, lactating cows (ages 2-13; average calving date of April 14) and their calves were assigned, after stratifying by age, weight, and previous winter management, …

Forecasting Forage Yield On Clayey Ecological Sites In Western South Dakota Using Weather Data, Alexander J. Smart, Barry H. Dunn, Lan Xu, Patricia S. Johnson, Roger N. Gates

South Dakota Beef Report, 2005

The ability to forecast annual forage yield from weather data would be useful for making appropriate adjustments to stocking rates in order to achieve or maintain desired plant communities. Our objective was to determine the relationship between weather variables and annual forage yield from three distinct plant communities on clayey ecological sites in western South Dakota. Forage yield and weather data were collected from 1945 through 1960 at the Cottonwood Range and Livestock Research Station, in western South Dakota. Pastures stocked at 0.25, 0.40, and 0.60 AUM/acre from 1942 to 1960 developed into western wheatgrass-dominated, western wheatgrass-shortgrass co-dominated, and shortgrass …

Computational Design And Experimental Testing Of A Novel Axial Flow Lvad, Alexandrina Untaroiu, Houston Wood, Paul Allaire Jan 2005

Computational Design And Experimental Testing Of A Novel Axial Flow Lvad, Alexandrina Untaroiu, Houston Wood, Paul Allaire

Articles

Thousands of cardiac failure patients per year in the United States could benefit from long-term mechanical circulatory support as destination therapy. To provide an improvement over currently available devices, we have designed a fully implantable axial-flow ventricular assist device with a magnetically levitated impeller (LEV-VAD). In contrast to currently available devices, the LEV-VAD has an unobstructed blood flow path and no secondary flow regions, generating substantially less retrograde and stagnant flow. The pump design included the extensive use of conventional pump design equations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling for predicting pressure-flow curves, hydraulic efficiencies, scalar fluid stress levels, exposure …
