The Trouble With Tracing, Manuel R. Vargas Jan 2005

The Trouble With Tracing, Manuel R. Vargas

Philosophy

Many prominent theories of moral responsibility rely on the notion of "tracing," the idea that responsibility for an outcome can be located in (i.e., "traced back to") some prior moment of control, perhaps significantly antecedent to the proximate sources of a considered action. In this article, I show how there is a problem for theories that rely on tracing. The problem is connected to the knowledge condition on moral responsibility. Many prima facie good candidate cases for tracing analyses appear to violate the knowledge condition on moral responsibility. So, either we need to dispense with tracing approaches or we must …

The Challenge Of Restoring Functioning Salt Marsh Ecosystem, John Callaway Jan 2005

The Challenge Of Restoring Functioning Salt Marsh Ecosystem, John Callaway

Environmental Science

Substantial improvements have been made in the restoration of coastal salt marshes over the last decade; however, many challenges remain. Some opportunities for improving restoration efforts include: I. Increasing our understanding of the development of restored salt marsh ecosystems over time, especially in comparison to natural marsh development; and identifying the limiting factors that restrict the development of restored salt marshes. II Considering the role of plant species diversity in restored salt marshes. Recent research at Tijuana Estuary has demonstrated that there is a significant effect of plant species diversity on the development of ecosystem functions in a restored salt …

Effects Of Spring Supplementary Feeding On Population Density And Breeding Success Of Released Pheasants Phasianus Colchicus In Britain, Roger A. H. Draycott, Maureen I. A. Woodburn, John P. Carroll, Rufus B. Sage Jan 2005

Effects Of Spring Supplementary Feeding On Population Density And Breeding Success Of Released Pheasants Phasianus Colchicus In Britain, Roger A. H. Draycott, Maureen I. A. Woodburn, John P. Carroll, Rufus B. Sage

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The release of hand-reared ring-necked pheasants Phasianus colchicus in summer is a common practice in Britain to increase the number of birds available to hunters in winter. The breeding success of the birds which survive the shooting season is poor. Traditionally, birds are provided with supplementary wheat grain from release until the end of the shooting season (1 February) to maintain body condition and to help hold birds in areas for hunting. During 1997- 2000 we assessed the effect of continuing supplementary feeding into spring on pheasant density and breeding success on seven private shooting estates. On each estate we …

Optimizing Allocation Of Monitoring Effort Under Economic And Observational Constraints, Scott A. Field, Andrew J. Tyre, Hugh P. Possingham Jan 2005

Optimizing Allocation Of Monitoring Effort Under Economic And Observational Constraints, Scott A. Field, Andrew J. Tyre, Hugh P. Possingham

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Efforts to design monitoring regimes capable of detecting population trends can be thwarted by observational and economic constraints inherent to most biological surveys. Ensuring that limited resources are allocated efficiently requires evaluation of statistical power for alternative survey designs. We simulated the process of data collection on a landscape, where we initiated declines over 3 sample periods in species of varying prevalence and detectability. Changing occupancy levels were estimated using a technique that accounted for effects of false-negative errors on survey data. Declines were identified within a frequentist statistical framework, but the significance level was set at an optimal level …

L’Intertextualité Géopolitique Dans Le Petit Chat Est Mort De Fejria Deliba, Sarah Buchanan Jan 2005

L’Intertextualité Géopolitique Dans Le Petit Chat Est Mort De Fejria Deliba, Sarah Buchanan

French Publications

In this article, Buchanan examines how Fejria Deliba’s short film, Le petit chat est mort, questions the ideas that conservative members of North African and French communities mobilize to separate themselves from each other. Using theories of intertextuality and geopolitical conscience, Buchanan illustrates how “imagined communities” are always influenced by other national narrations, and how “home” is never isolated, pure or preserved. On the contrary, Buchanan highlights how Deliba presents the French and North African cultures as spaces of intersection and interface, that is, of intertext.

Free Exercise And Individualized Exemptions: Herein Of Smith, Sherbert, Hogwarts, And Religious Liberty, Richard F. Duncan Jan 2005

Free Exercise And Individualized Exemptions: Herein Of Smith, Sherbert, Hogwarts, And Religious Liberty, Richard F. Duncan

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

In Employment Division v. Smith, the Supreme Court revised its jurisprudence of religious liberty by declaring that, as a general rule, the free exercise of religion may be prohibited by government so long as it does so by means of a neutral law of general application. However, in Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye, Inc. v. City of Hialeah, the Court made clear that "[a] law burdening religious practice that is not neutral or not of general application" violates the Free Exercise Clause unless the government justifies the restriction on religious liberty by passing a surpassingly strict compelling …

(The Princess and the Goblin at the Gordon Schools, Huntly, December 15 through 17, 2004)

The Gordon Schools' production of The Princess and the Goblin was a treat. In Stuart Paterson's adaptation for the stage, George MacDonald's fable retains its particular charm; but, being a tale of good versus evil, it also provides the elements of pantomime.

Orts: The George MacDonald Society Newsletter

An English Heritage blue plaque was unveiled by the wellknown biographer and novelist A.N. Wilson at Tudor Lodge, 20 Albert Street, Camden Town in north London on Tuesday 28th June. George MacDonald and his family lived at Tudor Lodge from 1860 to 1863 in the early days of his career as a writer. The plaque describes MacDonald most appropriately as a 'Story Teller'. Mr. Wilson made a speech quoting from his favourite MacDonald book, At the Back of the North Wind. Then the Society's Chairman, Richard Lines, made a short speech giving an overview of MacDonald's significance, followed by John …

2005 The Maine Warden Service And The State Of Maine: A Contemporary And Historical Overview, Timothy E. Peabody, Thomas A. Santaguida

Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW)

Multi facet changes in many aspects of the State of Maine has not necessarily been followed by proportional changes in the structure of the Maine Warden Service. The following areas will be reviewed in this report

  • Increased Population -A review of population trends in the state from 1970 to 1997. Reference will be made to population movements in the state creating more of an interaction between people and wildlife.
  • Increased Access - Road access to remote sections of the state has increased dramatically over the past 20 years; creating increased opportunity for recreational use. Development of water access sites allows …

The Indian Springs #2 Site(41bw512): A Late 18th Century Kadahadacho Settlement In Northeast Texas, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Indian Springs #2 site (41BW512) is on a high alluvial terrace or bluff edge (330 ft. amsl), overlooking the Red River floodplain and Hubbard Slough, an old channel of the river. The current channel of the river is ca. 1.6 km north of the site.

The site appears to be a late 18th century Kadohadacho settlement with a small cemetery, although there is evidence in the collections known to have come from it that it was also occupied in Archaic and Early Caddo times (ca. A.D. 900-1200) as well as in the early to mid-19'h century. The site was …
