The Myth Of The Swiss Lutherans: Martin Bucer And The Eucharistic Controversy In Bern, Amy Nelson Burnett
The Myth Of The Swiss Lutherans: Martin Bucer And The Eucharistic Controversy In Bern, Amy Nelson Burnett
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Most accounts of the eucharistic controversy assume that after the Swiss cities rejected the Wittenberg Concord, Martin Bucer had no more influence in Switzerland. In Bern, however, a party supporting Bucer's concord theology dominated the church from the later 1530s through the 1540s. Although traditionally identified as Lutherans, the theological statements of this group demonstrate their loyalty to Bucer's "middle way" between Luther and Zwingli. The expulsion of this party from Bern in 1548 meant the end of Bucer's influence in western Switzerland, finalized by the Consensus Tigurinus, which carefully avoided any Buceran terminology.

Allelic Variation In The Erythropoietin Receptor Gene Is Associated With Uterine Capacity And Litter Size In Swine, J. L. Vallet, B. A. Freaking, K. A. Leymaster, R. K. Christenson
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP; C vs. T) that creates an extra GATA-1 site (T allele) in intron 4 of the swine erythropoietin receptor (EPOR) gene was discovered and a genotyping assay for this SNP was developed. A total of 402 gilts from lines selected either at random (control), for ovulation rate (OR) or for uterine capacity (UC) for 11 generations were unilaterally hysterectomized-ovariectomized (UHO) at 160 days of age, mated at approximately 250 days of age and slaughtered at 105 days of pregnancy. Blood samples and spleens were collected from each foetus and the numbers of corpora lutea (CL) …

Targeted Oligonucleotide-Mediated Microsatellite Identification (Tommi) From Large-Insert Library Clones, Kefei Chen, Christoph Knorr, Kirsten Bornemann-Kolatzki, Jun Ren, Lusheng Huang, Gary A. Rohrer, Bertram Brenig
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Background: In the last few years, microsatellites have become the most popular molecular marker system and have intensively been applied in genome mapping, biodiversity and phylogeny studies of livestock. Compared to single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) as another popular marker system, microsatellites reveal obvious advantages. They are multi-allelic, possibly more polymorphic and cheaper to genotype. Calculations showed that a multi-allelic marker system always has more power to detect Linkage Disequilibrium (LD) than does a di-allelic marker system [1]. Traditional isolation methods using partial genomic libraries are time-consuming and costintensive. In order to directly generate microsatellites from large-insert libraries a sequencing approach …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Background: Genome assemblies rely on the existence of transcript sequence to stitch together contigs, verify assembly of whole genome shotgun reads, and annotate genes. Functional genomics studies also rely on transcript sequence to create expression microarrays or interpret digital tag data produced by methods such as Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE). Transcript sequence can be predicted based on reconstruction from overlapping expressed sequence tags (EST) that are obtained by single-pass sequencing of random cDNA clones, but these reconstructions are prone to errors caused by alternative splice forms, transcripts from gene families with related sequences, and expressed pseudogenes. These errors …
Effects Of Food Deprivation On Blood Lipid Concentration And Composition In Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus), Michelle Lea Berman
Effects Of Food Deprivation On Blood Lipid Concentration And Composition In Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus), Michelle Lea Berman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Steller sea lions, the largest Otariid, fast during their breeding season; during this time they refrain from ingesting food for a period of 12-43 days. Fasting, while undertaking an extremely energetically demanding activity (breeding and pupping), requires specific physiological adaptations. This study examined the physiological response to fasting of two age classes, juveniles and sub-adults, during the breeding and non-breeding seasons to determine how these animals utilize lipids and the pattern of fatty acid mobilization from lipid stores during fasting. Four juveniles and 5 sub-adults were fasted for one and two weeks, respectively, and blood samples were collected approximately every …
Communicating Culture Through Capoeira, Desislava Georgieva
Communicating Culture Through Capoeira, Desislava Georgieva
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The popularity of capoeira, a dance based in the martial arts and originating among slaves in Sixteenth-Century Brazil, has increased greatly in recent decades as it has spread worldwide as a performance representative of Brazilian history and culture. In 1974, capoeira was declared the national sport of Brazil. Today capoeira academies and competitions may be found wherever Brazilian culture is celebrated and communicated in many major foreign cities. My thesis, through the participant/observer method and the use of long interviews, examines capoeira as it is practiced in one particular academy far from the art form's place of origin. In the …

Novel Protein-Protein Interactions Regulate The Proteolytic Activity Of The Pro- Apoptotic Serine Protease, Omi/Htra2, Supriya Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Omi/HtrA2 is a mitochondrial serine protease with high homology to the bacterial HtrA proteins. Omi promotes caspase-dependent apoptosis by binding and degrading IAPs-inhibitor of apoptosis proteins. Omi can also induce caspase-independent apoptosis but the actual mechanism is still unknown. IAP's are not the only substrates cleaved by Omi. There are at least two more known substrates of Omi, the HAX-1 and the ped/pea-15 proteins. HS1-associated protein X-1 (HAX-1) is a mitochondrial protein, degraded by Omi after induction of caspase-dependent apoptosis. Ped/pea-15 is also an anti-apoptotic protein and is cleaved by Omi after induction of caspase-independent apoptosis. The proteolytic activity of …
Responses Of The Florida Mouse (Podomys Floridanus) To Habitat Management, Jason Depue
Responses Of The Florida Mouse (Podomys Floridanus) To Habitat Management, Jason Depue
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Florida mouse (Podomys floridanus), a species restricted to the Lake Wales Ridge and the Atlantic Coastal Ridge, is recognized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as a species of special concern, highlighting its status as a species that is threatened by habitat loss statewide. Publicly owned lands offer protection for the species, but management is generally focused on protecting biodiversity in general and not a particular species. The response of the Florida mouse to land management practices such as mechanical treatment and prescribed fires is poorly documented. This research examined the population responses of Florida mice on …

BACKGROUND
Currently, there is no effective intervention for a primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy.
METHODS
We studied pregnant women with a primary CMV infection. The therapy group comprised women whose amniotic fluid contained either CMV or CMV DNA and who were offered intravenous CMV hyperimmune globulin at a dose of 200 U per kilogram of maternal weight. A prevention group, consisting of women with a recent primary infection before 21 weeks' gestation or who declined amniocentesis, was offered monthly hyperimmune globulin (100 U per kilogram intravenously).
RESULTS
In the therapy group, 31 women received hyperimmune globulin, only 1 (3 …

Day Vs. Night Sampling For Spiders In Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane
Day Vs. Night Sampling For Spiders In Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane
Horticulture and Crop Science
We compared day sampling (between 0700 and 1100) and night sampling (between 1900 and 2300) of spiders on grapevines in a California vineyard in 1993 and 1994, shaking spiders from the vines onto a drop cloth and vacuuming them up. Pooled density of the seven most abundant spider species did not differ significantly between day and night sampling, nor did density of Cheiracanthium inclusum (Miturgidae), Trachelas pacificus (Corrinidae), Oxyopes spp. (Oxyopidae) or Neoscona oaxacensis (Araneidae). Under day sampling Metaphidippus vitis (Salticidae) was 60% more abundant and Hololena nedra (Agelenidae) more than 2.5 fold more abundant than under night sampling. Daytime …
