Silvopasture Water And Fencing Systems For Cattle, Sid Brantly Feb 2005

Silvopasture Water And Fencing Systems For Cattle, Sid Brantly

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Silvopasture is an agroforestry system that combines grazing livestock with growing trees for a timber product. Creating small, fenced paddocks and rotating cattle builds in "recovery periods" for the forage and protects the soil and trees. In a silvopastoral system, grazing recovery periods can only be achieved when well-designed livestock water supplies and cross fences are used. Fortunately, technological advances in livestock water system design and fence materials have helped to create a feasible working environment where rotating livestock from one silvopasture paddock to another can be both convenient and affordable. However, some special considerations must be given to water …

Opinion: Avian Brains And A New Understanding Of Vertebrate Brain Evolution, Gerald E. Hough, The Avian Brain Nomenclature Consortium Feb 2005

Opinion: Avian Brains And A New Understanding Of Vertebrate Brain Evolution, Gerald E. Hough, The Avian Brain Nomenclature Consortium

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

We believe that names have a powerful influence on the experiments we do and the way in which we think. For this reason, and in the light of new evidence about the function and evolution of the vertebrate brain, an international consortium of neuroscientists has reconsidered the traditional, 100-year-old terminology that is used to describe the avian cerebrum. Our current understanding of the avian brain — in particular the neocortex-like cognitive functions of the avian pallium — requires a new terminology that better reflects these functions and the homologies between avian and mammalian brains.

Radioactive Neighbor: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, The Radioactivist Campaign (Trac)

The RadioActivist Campaign

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) reports releases of radioactive and toxic materials into its surroundings. LLNL also monitors its environment for radioactive and toxic materials, with results published in an annual Environmental Report. LLNL’s radiological monitoring focuses on two radionuclides “often associated with LLNL operations”: hydrogen-3 (called tritium) and plutonium. Other radioactive by-products of nuclear fission and nuclear activation are not included in LLNL’s routine monitoring. Thus, neighbors of LLNL have to largely rely on LLNL to report its own sources of radioactivity (such as pipes, stacks, effluent, etc.). Livermore residents also have to rely on LLNL to report …

Hybrid Xerogel Films As Novel Coatings For Antifouling And Fouling Release, Ying Tang, John A. Finlay, Gregory L. Kowalke, Anne E. Meyer, Frank V. Bright, Maureen E. Callow, James A. Callow, Dean E. Wendt, Michael R. Detty

Biological Sciences

Hybrid sol-gel-derived xerogel films prepared from 45/55 (mol ratio) n-propyltrimethoxysilane (C3-TMOS)/tetramethylorthosilane (TMOS), 2/98 (mol ratio) bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]-ethylenediamine (enTMOS)/tetraethylorthosilane (TEOS), 50/50 (mol ratio) n-octyltriethoxysilane (C8-TEOS)/TMOS, and 50/50 (mol ratio) 3,3,3-trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane (TFP-TMOS)/TMOS were found to inhibit settlement of zoospores of the marine fouling alga Ulva (syn. Enteromorpha) relative to settlement on acid-washed glass and give greater release of settled zoospores relative to glass upon exposure to pressure from a water jet. The more hydrophobic 50/50 C8-TEOS/TMOS xerogel films had the lowest critical surface tension by comprehensive contact angle analysis and gave significantly greater release of 8-day Ulva sporeling biomass after exposure to …

Reflection And Cognitive Strategy Instruction: Modeling Active Learning For Pre-Service Teachers, Barbara C. Palmer, C. Glennon Rowell, Mary Alice Brooks

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading methodology courses, like other courses in college, are often one-dimensional when it comes to instructional delivery systems. Too often, "teacher talk" that elicits far too little reflection prevails. This practice can be changed with activities calling for students to construct knowledge from their experiences, thus following basic tenets of constructivism. The purpose of this article is to discuss how pre-service teachers can be taught to think beyond strategies in methodology and reflect upon language itself Three instructional strategies - semantic feature analysis, fictitious writing systems activities, and nonsense story analysis - are examples of ways college professors can get …

Integrated Fisheries Management Report Western Rock Lobster Resource., Department Of Fisheries Feb 2005

Integrated Fisheries Management Report Western Rock Lobster Resource., Department Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

This report is the first in a series of Integrated Fisheries Management (IFM) reports required under the 2004 Government Policy on IFM. Under this policy, the Executive Director of Fisheries is required to approve a sustainability report for each fishery, which includes a clear statement on the harvest level. The sustainable harvest level is that total catch, or catch range, that is to be allocated among the various user groups identified for that particular fishery. These IFM reports will assist in the process of allocating explicit shares in the use of Western Australia’s fish resources. They do not establish the …

Functional Specialization Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Cytosolic Thioredoxin H1 In The Response To Alkylation-Induced Dna Damage, Nandita Sarkar, Stephane Lemaire, Danxia Wu-Scharf, Emmanuelle Issakidis-Bourguet, Heriberto D. Cerutti

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

DNA damage occurs as a by-product of intrinsic cellular processes, like DNA replication, or as a consequence of exposure to genotoxic agents. Organisms have evolved multiple mechanisms to avoid, tolerate, or repair DNA lesions. To gain insight into these processes, we have isolated mutants hypersensitive to DNA damaging agents in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. One mutant, Ble-1, showed decreased survival when it was treated with methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), bleomycin, or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) but behaved like the wild type when it was exposed to UVC irradiation. Ble-1 carries an extensive chromosomal deletion that includes …

Minimising The Cost Of Future Stock Monitoring, And Assessment Of The Potential For Increased Yields, From The Oceanic Snapper, Pagrus Auratus, Stock Off Shark Bay, Michael J. Moran, Peter Stephenson, Daniel J. Gaughan, Nadia E. Tapp, Jenny Moore Feb 2005

Tapp, Jenny Moore

Fisheries Research Reports

The investment in this project has resulted in a substantially more extensive set of age composition data than would have otherwise been possible. This in turn has underpinned stock assessment modeling that has provided the basis for determining that the commercial fishery for snapper in Shark Bay needed a substantial decrease the total allowable catch. The modeling was able to determine that the stock was at a low size following a period of low recruitment during the late 1990s. The suspected low recruitment, evident once the age date were collated, and anticipated negative effects on the stock were both quantitatively …

Mechanisms For The Environmental Regulation Of Gene Expression: Ecological Aspects Of Animal Development, Scott F. Gilbert Feb 2005

Mechanisms For The Environmental Regulation Of Gene Expression: Ecological Aspects Of Animal Development, Scott F. Gilbert

Biology Faculty Works

The environment can play a significant role in the production of phenotypes. However, the developmental mechanisms by which the environmental agents effect normal development are Just becoming known. At least three paths have been found through which the environment can modify gene activity. The first is the neuroendocrine route. Here, the nervous system monitors the environment and transfers signals to the endocrine system. The endocrine hormones can then alter gene expression. The second route involves environmental factors that change the methylation pattern of genes, thereby altering their transcriptional capabilities. The third route involves the direct induction of gene expression in …

Nitrogen Deposition Onto The United States And Western Europe: A Synthesis Of Observations And Models., Elisabeth A. Holland, Rob Braswell, James Sulzman, Jean-Francois Lamarque

Earth Sciences

The documented acceleration of NH3 and NOx (NO + NO2) emissions over the last 150 years has accelerated N deposition, compromising air and water quality and altering the functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems worldwide. To construct continental-scale N budgets, we produced maps of N deposition fluxes from site-network observations for the United States and Western Europe. Increases in the rates of N cycling for these two regions of the world are large, and they have undergone profound modification of biospheric–atmospheric N exchanges, and ecosystem function. The maps are necessarily restricted to the network measured quantities …

The Effects Of Fire Suppression On Bachman’S Sparrows In Upland Pine Forests Of Eastern Texas, Richard N. Conner, Clifford E. Shackelford, Richard R. Schaefer, Daniel Saenz Feb 2005

The Effects Of Fire Suppression On Bachman’S Sparrows In Upland Pine Forests Of Eastern Texas, Richard N. Conner, Clifford E. Shackelford, Richard R. Schaefer, Daniel Saenz

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

We studied the effects of 8 years of fire suppression on shrub-level vegetation, Bachman’s Sparrows (Aimophila aestivalis), and selected forest bird species between 1995 and 2003 in eastern Texas. Woody shrub-level vegetation between ground level and 3 m above the ground, measured using a leaf area index, increased significantly in all sites (n = 20) previously managed for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) in both longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) and loblolly- (P. taeda) shortleaf (P. echinata) pine habitats. Woody shrub-level vegetation between ground level and 3 m also increased significantly in one-half of control sites (n = 20). During the 8 …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2004-2005, Bruce B. Johnson, Aaron C. Raymond

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

During a period of record-level farm incomes, Nebraska farmland values rose an average of 11.9 % for the year ending February 1, 2005, the largest annual percentage increase of the past 16 years. The increase followed the sizable advances of the previous year, in contrast to several recent years of fairly stable to moderate value increases. While increases were reported by UNL survey respondents across the entire state, there was considerable variability in magnitude of percentage gains. Largest gains were recorded in southeast and eastern Nebraska, with changes of 18.8 % and 13.5 % respectively. Much smaller annual gains were …

Stochastic Dietary Restriction Using A Markov-Chain Feeding Protocol Elicits Complex, Life History Response In Medflies, James R. Carey, Pablo Liedo, Hans-Georg Müller, Jane-Ling Wang, Ying Zhang, Lawrence G. Harshman Feb 2005

Stochastic Dietary Restriction Using A Markov-Chain Feeding Protocol Elicits Complex, Life History Response In Medflies, James R. Carey, Pablo Liedo, Hans-Georg Müller, Jane-Ling Wang, Ying Zhang, Lawrence G. Harshman

Lawrence G. Harshman Publications

Lifespan in individually housed medflies (virgins of both sexes) and daily reproduction for females were studied following one of 12 dietary restriction (DR) treatments in which the availability of high-quality food (yeast–sugar mixture) for each fly was based on a Markov chain feeding scheme – a stochastic dietary regime which specifies that the future dietary state depends only on the present dietary state and not on the path by which the present state was achieved. The stochastic treatments consisted of a combination of one of four values of a ‘discovery’ parameter and one of three values of a ‘persistence’ parameter. …

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Proposed Endangered Status For The Salt Creek Tiger Beetle (Cicindela Nevadica Lincolniana)

Endangered Species Bulletin

We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), propose to list the Salt Creek tiger beetle (Cicindela nevadica lincolniana) as endangered under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). The Salt Creek tiger beetle, a member of the family Cicindelidae, is endemic to the saline wetlands of eastern Nebraska and associated streams in the northern third of Lancaster County and southern margin of Saunders County in Nebraska, where it is found in barren salt flat and saline stream edge habitats. Of six known populations in 1991, three are now extirpated and the remaining …
