The Defensin Gene In Dermacentor Variabilis And Ixodes Scapularis, Katherine Corbett Seguin Apr 2005

The Defensin Gene In Dermacentor Variabilis And Ixodes Scapularis, Katherine Corbett Seguin

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

In response to microbial challenge, invertebrates rely on their innate immune response to recognize and destroy harmful pathogens. One of the primary proteins produced by the response and that has been observed in many invertebrates, including insects, mussels, and ticks, is defensin. These proteins are responsible for forming pores in the membranes of invading microbes thereby destroying them. This study examined the gene coding region for defensin in two important tick disease vectors, Dermacentor variabilis and Ixodes scapularis. PCR amplification of the genes from tick chromosomal DNA resulted in the amplification of a 225 base pair amplicon. Sequencing of …

The Influence Of Visibility, Cloud Ceiling, Financial Incentive, And Personality Factors On General Aviation Pilots' Willingness To Take Off Into Marginal Weather, Part I: The Data And Preliminary Conclusions, William Knecht, Howard Harris, Scott Shappell Apr 2005

The Influence Of Visibility, Cloud Ceiling, Financial Incentive, And Personality Factors On General Aviation Pilots' Willingness To Take Off Into Marginal Weather, Part I: The Data And Preliminary Conclusions, William Knecht, Howard Harris, Scott Shappell

Publications

Adverse weather is the leading cause of fatalities in general aviation (GA). In this research, influences of ground visibility, cloud ceiling height, financial incentive, and personality were tested on 60 GA pilots' willingness to take off into simulated adverse weather. Results suggested that pilots do not see "weather" as a monolithic cognitive construct but, rather, as an interaction between its separate factors. This is supported by the finding that the multiplicative statistical effect of visibility and ceiling could better predict takeoff than could the linear effect of either variable considered separately. Also found was a statistical trend toward financial incentive …

An Application And Evaluation Of A Methodology For Testing Operational Level Training Simulations, Karl Dean Neal Apr 2005

An Application And Evaluation Of A Methodology For Testing Operational Level Training Simulations, Karl Dean Neal

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center has developed a methodology for testing operational-level training simulation systems. The methodology is built on analyses of the military tasks that an operational-level simulation is intended to train. These tasks are derived from the U.S. Department of Defense Universal Joint Task List. The methodology analyzes the categories of capabilities the simulation should have to support those tasks based on operational-level-military entities and actions. Cross-referencing the tasks and capabilities leads to functionality items the simulation should have. The methodology focuses on training joint force command tasks and decision making at the operational level of …

Feeding Behavior And Conditioning In Two Heterotrophic Dinoflagellates, Todd A. Egerton Apr 2005

Feeding Behavior And Conditioning In Two Heterotrophic Dinoflagellates, Todd A. Egerton

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Growth and abundance of heterotrophic dinoflagellate predators are generally attributed to the availability of algal prey. Several species of dinoflagellates feed on a wide variety of food types including fish. However the actual feeding preferences of dinoflagellates have been much less studied. In the few studies that have been carried out on dinoflagellate feeding preference, none have looked at possible factors that may affect preference. I conducted three experiments on the toxic dinoflagellate Pfiesteria piscicida and the related unnamed species Cryptoperidiniopsis brodyi which, (1) calculated the feeding preferences between algal Rhodomonas prey and fish blood cells and identified factors that …

The Immediate Effect Of Cryotherapy At The Ankle Joint On Postural Control, Bradley W. Sage Apr 2005

The Immediate Effect Of Cryotherapy At The Ankle Joint On Postural Control, Bradley W. Sage

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the immediate effect of cryotherapy at the ankle joint on measures of static and dynamic postural control. Scores for the chronically unstable ankle were analyzed during a static and dynamic stability test through the use of video analysis. The static test consisted of each subject performing a single leg stance on a multi-axial progressive balance board for one minute. The dynamic test consisted of each subject performing an agility hop test, in which they "hopped" to each of six squares marked on the floor in sequential order. The dependent measure for each …

Here And There, Warren D. M. Reed Apr 2005

Here And There, Warren D. M. Reed

English Theses & Dissertations

HERE AND THERE is a collection of short stories bringing both outré burlesque comedy and tragic moments from the human drama under one heading. I believe, as Victor Hugo pointed out in his Preface de Cromwell, that comedy and tragedy are intrinsic elements of human life and therefore ought to be represented together. The first section is mostly comedy, and explores the ironic grotesqueries of life in the West. The concluding section, whose stories are set in Francophone Africa, examines in a more serious tone conflicts arising directly and indirectly from contact with the West.

Applying A Simulation-Based Real-Time Decision Making Method To Mass Casualty Scenarios In Hospital Emergency Departments, Fatemah Al-Douli Apr 2005

Applying A Simulation-Based Real-Time Decision Making Method To Mass Casualty Scenarios In Hospital Emergency Departments, Fatemah Al-Douli

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The high possibility of having a mass casualty incident compels hospitals to plan ahead in order to sufficiently provide the healthcare needed to as many casualty victims as possible. The Emergency Rooms (ER) are usually hospitals' main entrance for many casualties. Therefore, the ER in the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) was selected as the system to be examined. The ER in CHKD, the only specialized pediatric ER in the region, already struggles to handle very high patient arrival rates. Consequently, it is expected that treating a large number of patients surviving within a very short period of …

Rapid Prototyping For The Design Of Virtual Worlds, Prabhu V. Krishnan Apr 2005

Rapid Prototyping For The Design Of Virtual Worlds, Prabhu V. Krishnan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Development of Virtual Reality (VR) applications is challenging where application developers are required to have expertise in the target VR technologies along with the problem domain expertise. New VR technologies impose a significant learning curve to even the most experienced VR developer. The proposed solution relies on synthesis to automate the migration of a VR application to a new unfamiliar VR platform/technology. To solve the problem, the Common Scene Definition Framework (CSDF) was developed, that serves as a superset/model representation of the target virtual world. Input modules were developed to populate the framework with the capabilities of the virtual world …

Factors Influencing The Decision To Disclose After Sexual Assault, Courtney A. Hanley Apr 2005

Factors Influencing The Decision To Disclose After Sexual Assault, Courtney A. Hanley

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Virginians Aligned Against Sexual Assault (VAASA, 2004) report that I in 4 women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Despite the prevalence of the crime, most women do not report acts of sexual assault to the police, making sexual assault, and rape in particular, one of the most underreported crimes (Backman, 1998). Research on has focused primarily on third-party reactions to sexual assault and victim culpability, but rarely seeks data directly from the victim in order to understand the psychological process of disclosing, or delaying disclosure, after an assault. Participants, 44 sexual assault victims seeking counseling at a non-profit rape …

Institute for Technology, Social, and Policy Awareness, Inc. (ITSPA)

Past releases to the environment from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Y- 12 Plant have been of continuing concern to Oak Ridge and downstream communities since the release of mercury, uranium, and other contaminants were made public beginning in 1983. These releases continue to affect the region in many ways today. The intent of this report is to ensure we do not forget what has transpired in this community and to provide a clearer understanding of the impacts on local property owners, particularly those along the East Fork Poplar Creek (EFPC).

This document is intended to serve as an …

Oracle In Brussels, Christian Duvernoy, Sven Völcker

Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr Antitrust Series

It was hands across the water when both a U.S. district court and the European Commission cleared the $10.3 billion merger of Oracle and PeopleSoft. The Department of Justice, which had opposed the deal, had decided not to appeal its defeat in the San Francisco court, and it is thought that the Commission took this as a sign that U.S. regulators would not take it amiss if their European counterparts also let the merger proceed. In any event, there was none of the resentment and outrage that bubbled over not so long ago when U.S. antitrust authorities approved the GE/Honeywell …

Evaluation Of Autoregressive Covariance Structures For Test-Day Records Of Holstein Cows: Estimates Of Parameters, R. M. Sawalha, Jeffrey F. Keown, Stephen D. Kachman, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to compare test-day (TD) models with autoregressive covariance structures for the estimation of genetic and environmental components of variance for milk, fat and protein yields, and somatic cell score (SCS) in Holstein cows. Four models were compared: model I (CS model) was a simple TD repeatability animal model with compound symmetry covariance structure for environmental effects, model II (ARpe model) and model III (ARe model) had first-order autoregressive covariance structures for TD permanent or residual environmental effects, respectively, and model IV (305-d model) was a simple animal model using 305-d records. Data …

Fall From Grace: Arming America And The Bellesiles Scandal, James T. Lindgren Mar 2005

Fall From Grace: Arming America And The Bellesiles Scandal, James T. Lindgren

Law and Economics Papers

Before there was a scandal, there was a book - Michael A. Bellesiles's Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture. Arming America is a well-written and compelling story of how early Americans were largely unfamiliar with guns until the approach of the Civil War. It tells a wide-ranging, detailed, but relatively unnuanced story of gunlessness in early America. Bellesiles writes: "The vast majority of those living in British North American colonies had no use for firearms, which were costly, difficult to locate and maintain, and expensive to use." His primary evidence was low counts of guns in probate …
