What’S Wrong With The Right: A Conservative Vision For The Twenty-First Century, Ted Mcallister Apr 2005

What’S Wrong With The Right: A Conservative Vision For The Twenty-First Century, Ted Mcallister

School of Public Policy Working Papers

What's wrong with the right? It has become a political movement, disconnected from a larger, more complicated and diverse social and cultural tradition. By the 1980s the right had transformed the Republican Party, had articulated a clear if not consistent agenda. After Reagan the right turned policy agendas into ideological objectives. What made their ideology different was the apocalyptic quality to the struggle for power. With the right ideas, the good cause, the right settled into a Manichean language that demonized opponents. With the stakes so high, those on the right approached politics as a Hobbesian conflict rather than a …

The Antitumor Agent, Arglabin-Dma, Preferentially Induces Apoptosis In Human Colon Tumor Cells, Sung Wook Kwon Apr 2005

The Antitumor Agent, Arglabin-Dma, Preferentially Induces Apoptosis In Human Colon Tumor Cells, Sung Wook Kwon

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Arglabin-DMA, an analog of farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP), reportedly inhibits farnesyltransferase (FTase) directly by competitively blocking the binding of Ras protein and its posttranslational modification, as suggested in previous studies. But, the mechanisms by which Arglabin-DMA inhibits tumor growth in vivo and in vitro are still relatively poorly characterized. To determine the mechanism by which this drug inhibits tumor growth, the effects of Arglabin-DMA in two human colon tumor cell lines (mutant K-ras HCT 116 and wild-type ras HT-29) were explored on cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle kinetics in vitro. In cell viability studies, we showed that Arglabin-DMA …

Grand Strategy Analysis: A Proto-Theoretical Approach, Patrick Magee Apr 2005

Grand Strategy Analysis: A Proto-Theoretical Approach, Patrick Magee

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

International relations scholarship begins and ends with assumptions—about human nature; about human interaction; about starting points, relative information, and outcomes. Such assumptions are necessary to further the intellectual coherence and development of scholarly work. However, they restrict the applicability of scholarly research to those situations that parallel the work's underlying assumptions.

This work argues the body of international relations scholarship as a whole would benefit from the development of a pre-theory state, absent any assumptions about international relations, from which observers can identify those works of scholarship that are most effective in explaining perceptive states and the strategic decisions taken …

Agriculture Environmental Management System Electronic Manure Handling Process Map, John D. Harrison, Aditya H. Toney, Dallen R. Smith

Journal of Extension

Utah State University Cooperative Extension Agriculture Environmental Management Systems participants developed an electronic process flow method for identifying aspects and assessing impacts from the manure handling systems on animal feeding operations. This method breaks the manure handling system into manageable portions by delineating every process and support activity on a process flow diagram. Then each process and activity is individually examined to identify associated aspects. This approach expedites the identification of aspects in relation to those processes and activities. It also fulfills the operational control condition to "identify those operations and activities that are associated with identified significant environmental aspects."

Beta-Alanine Suppresses Heat Inactivation Of Lactate Dehydrogenase, Ankur D. Mehta, Norbert W. Seidler Apr 2005

Beta-Alanine Suppresses Heat Inactivation Of Lactate Dehydrogenase, Ankur D. Mehta, Norbert W. Seidler

Student Publications

Beta-Alanine exhibits neurotransmitter activity and is a component of the anti-glycation agent carnosine. We propose that beta-alanine may have additional properties which may be of physiological significance. Interestingly, stress modulates the level of beta-alanine, which regulates excitotoxicity responses and prevents neuronal cell death. We hypothesize that beta-alanine's protective role may involve preservation of enzyme structure and function, suggesting that beta-alanine may act as a chemical chaperone. We used light scattering, enzyme activity and intrinsic fluorescence to monitor heat-induced changes in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the presence and absence of beta-alanine. We observed that beta-alanine suppressed heat-induced LDH inactivation, prevented LDH …

Every summer, thousands of climbers and nearly half a million other tourists flock to Devils Tower in Wyoming due to its spectacular views and challenging climbing conditions. And every summer, members of several different Native American tribes travel to the religious site known as Bear Lodge, their name for Devils Tower, to perform religious rituals such as the Sun Dance. The Cheyenne, Arapaho, Crow, Kiowa, and Lakota all recognize Devils Tower as a sacred religious site, "grant it a prominent place in their mythology and oral histories, and in the past probably used it for individual religious observances" (Brown 2003: …

clearly remember shivering while rapidly walking across the stage at graduation last May amidst relentless rain, bolts of lightning, and cracks of thunder. As I grasped my hard-earned diploma and smiled genuinely for the camera, I felt prepared to leave for Nicaragua as a Peace Corps volunteer in a few months. Much like my stormy graduation ceremony, my experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua has presented some challenges and is not exactly as I expected, but nonetheless, it has been interesting, and at the end of the day, I feel grateful to be here.

Nerve Growth Factor Improves Muscle Healing Following Mechanical Injury, Raouf Bedir, Dalia Saleh, Mona Elshahat, Adel El-Hawary

Mansoura Medical Journal

Muscle injuries are very common in sports and trauma. The need for a quick and more complete recovery of the muscle after injury directs the attention towards growth factors, which are hormone-like biologically active polypeptides that control cell growth and differentiation. It was observed that nerve growth factor (NGF) is a potent stimulator of myoblast proliferation and fusion in vitro, thus, it was anticipated that NGF could enhance muscle healing in vivo. Six adult albino rats were used in this study. Both right and left gastrocnemius muscles of the albino rats were cut at 60% of their length from their …

Developing And Optimizing Conditions For Single Cell Genetic Analysis, Susan Adele Gitlin Apr 2005

Developing And Optimizing Conditions For Single Cell Genetic Analysis, Susan Adele Gitlin

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) allows for couples to obtain genetic information at the embryo stage, therefore preventing lethal genetic diseases in their offspring. A recent multi-center study determined a 17% amplification failure rate overall and a 3.4% misdiagnosis rate (ESHRE PGD consortium steering committee, 2002). Experiments presented here were conducted to decrease those rates by optimizing single cell sensitivity and specificity of PGD techniques. Primer extension preamplification (PEP) was used after initial amplification failure, followed by gene specific PCR. Reamplification experiments yielded 54% amplification rates using blastomeres that previously failed amplification. In the clinical trial, four of six blastomeres were …

The Role Of Interfunctional Market Orientation In New Product Program Success: An Exploratory Empirical Analysis, George Grady Gresham Apr 2005

The Role Of Interfunctional Market Orientation In New Product Program Success: An Exploratory Empirical Analysis, George Grady Gresham

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

A central tenet of the market orientation construct is the need for virtually all departments, not just the marketing department, to participate in gathering, disseminating and responding to market intelligence. Previous academic research provides empirical support for a positive relationship between market orientation and superior business performance. Superior business performance, for many firms, depends upon a continuous stream of new products emerging from their product development programs, yet few studies have demonstrated the link between market orientation and new product development program success. This dissertation conceptualizes market orientation below the strategic business level as interfunctional market orientation (IFMO) for cross-functional …

Hibernation Is Recorded In Lower Incisors Of Recent And Fossil Ground Ssquirrels (Spermophilus), Tom Goodwin, Gail R. Michener, Daniel Gonzalez, Caroline E. Rinaldi

Faculty Publications

Incremental dentin and associated enamel, features visible on the surface of lower incisors, were characterized for 3 species of ground squirrels (Spermophilus): Pleistocene and Recent S. elegans, Recent S. richardsonii, and Recent S. parryii. A hibernation mark was evident in incisor dentin and enamel, most characteristically as a sleeve of enamel terminating basally adjacent to medially depressed dentin with indistinct and often very fine increments. This mark was absent in juveniles but present in older animals of both sexes for at least 6 weeks after hibernation, eventually being lost through growth and wear of the incisor. Temporal association with hibernation …

The Great Pestilence: Yellow Fever In Portsmouth, Virginia, 1855, Burden Susan Lundgren

Health Services Research Dissertations

In 1855, the town of Portsmouth, Virginia was devastated by an epidemic of yellow fever. Most citizens fled. Of those who remained, most became infected and a thousand died. The municipal government collapsed. In their place, a small organization known as the Portsmouth Relief Association assumed responsibility for ensuring the survival of the town. This organization managed the care of the sick, the burial of the dead, and the care of orphans. It was the sole agent receiving and allocating the funds and resources that poured into the community. Scarce food, drugs and other supplies were available only through the …

Archetypes On Screen: Odysseus, St. Paul, Christ And The American Cinematic Hero And Anti-Hero, John Fitch Iii Apr 2005

Archetypes On Screen: Odysseus, St. Paul, Christ And The American Cinematic Hero And Anti-Hero, John Fitch Iii

Journal of Religion & Film

Within the national cinematic gestalt, we are continually offered portrayals of the individual redemptive journey. Filmmakers repeatedly give us versions of the hero and anti-hero. These figures have their roots in age-old mythological and religious characters, and are easily identifiable in the traditional Western and more recent Road Movie. This paper compares the mythic Odysseus and the Christian gospel's St. Paul, with a look also at the Christ-figure, in an examination of the cinematic use of the hero and anti-hero archetypes and their meanings.

Castaway And Cast Away: Colonial, Imperial, And Religious Discourses In Daniel Defoe And Robert Zemeckis, Catherine Craft-Fairchild Apr 2005

Castaway And Cast Away: Colonial, Imperial, And Religious Discourses In Daniel Defoe And Robert Zemeckis, Catherine Craft-Fairchild

Journal of Religion & Film

In Colonial Discourse and Post-Colonial Theory, Patrick Williams and Laura Chrisman offer a useful distinction between "colonialism, the conquest and direct control of other people's land" and "imperialism - the globalization of the capitalist mode of production, its penetration of previously non-capitalist regions of the world, and destruction of pre- or non-capitalist forms of social organization." Two works, one early and one recent, encapsulate this distinction. Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe positions its protagonist as a colonizer - a man who defies his father's exhortation to live modestly, instead embarking on a sea venture in the hopes of amassing significant …

Federalism's Fallacy: The Early Tradition Of Federal Family Law And The Invention Of States' Rights, Kristin Collins Apr 2005

Federalism's Fallacy: The Early Tradition Of Federal Family Law And The Invention Of States' Rights, Kristin Collins

Faculty Scholarship

By examining the history of the federal government's role in the regulation of the family, this article joins the work of others who in recent years have begun to piece together the history of the federal government's role in crafting domestic relations law and policy.'8 Much of this attention has focused on federal involvement in domestic relations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with relatively less consideration given to the pre-Civil War period. Though recent contributions to this field have helped to cure this imbalance, 19 there remains a strong sense, especially among lawyers and judges, that …

Law And Public Health: Beyond Emergency Preparedness, Wendy K. Mariner Apr 2005

Law And Public Health: Beyond Emergency Preparedness, Wendy K. Mariner

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines three questions: What is public health? What is public health law? What roles can lawyers play in public health? It first describes the breadth of public health, highlighting six trends shaping its future: social determinants of health; synergy between medicine and public health; shifts in focus from external (e.g., environmental and social) to internal (behavioral) risks to health; federalization of public health law; globalization of health risks and responses; and bioterrorism. Because the domains of law that apply to public health are equally broad, the Article next offers a conceptual framework for identifying the types of laws …

The Potential For Mitten Crab Colonization Of Estuaries On The West Coast Of North America, Erik Hanson, Mark Sytsma Apr 2005

The Potential For Mitten Crab Colonization Of Estuaries On The West Coast Of North America, Erik Hanson, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Mitten crabs are invasive species that pose a risk to the aquatic environments of the Pacific Northwest and the economic and social activities that depend upon intact aquatic systems. The recent establishment of a large population in the San Francisco Bay and the potential for introductions from California, Asia and Europe pose a significant invasion potential for esturaires and rivers from Catifornia to Alaska.
