Why Is Management A Cliché?, Stefano Harney Jul 2005

Why Is Management A Cliché?, Stefano Harney

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article introduces the term demotics of management by asking why so much management literature reads like a cliché. Typically this question has been approached by seeing the cliché as strategic. This article instead views the cliché as symptomatic. It marks a growing problem—how can management track labor out of the workplace and into the realm of social reproduction, a realm that is increasingly, with the tendency of immaterial labor, directly productive. This problem has produced not only the explosion of popular management literature, particularly in the United States, in the last 20 years, but also what might be called …

Memory Enhancement By A Semantically Unrelated Emotional Arousal Source Induced After Learning, Kristy A. Nielson, Douglas Yee, Kirk I. Erickson Jul 2005

Memory Enhancement By A Semantically Unrelated Emotional Arousal Source Induced After Learning, Kristy A. Nielson, Douglas Yee, Kirk I. Erickson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

It has been well established that moderate physiological or emotional arousal modulates memory. However, there is some controversy about whether the source of arousal must be semantically related to the information to be remembered. To test this idea, 35 healthy young adult participants learned a list of common nouns and afterward viewed a semantically unrelated, neutral or emotionally arousing videotape. The tape was shown after learning to prevent arousal effects on encoding or attention, instead influencing memory consolidation. Heart rate increase was significantly greater in the arousal group, and negative affect was significantly less reported in the non-arousal group after …

The Effects Of Non-Contingent Extrinsic And Intrinsic Rewards On Memory Consolidation, Kristy A. Nielson, Ted Bryant Jul 2005

The Effects Of Non-Contingent Extrinsic And Intrinsic Rewards On Memory Consolidation, Kristy A. Nielson, Ted Bryant

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Emotional and arousing treatments given shortly after learning enhance delayed memory retrieval in animal and human studies. Positive affect and reward induced prior to a variety of cognitive tasks enhance performance, but their ability to affect memory consolidation has not been investigated before. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a small, non-contingent, intrinsic or extrinsic reward on delayed memory retrieval. Participants (n = 108) studied and recalled a list of 30 affectively neutral, imageable nouns. Experimental groups were then given either an intrinsic reward (e.g., praise) or an extrinsic reward (e.g., $1). After a one-week delay, participants’ retrieval performance …

Transitive Inference And Commonly Coded Stimuli, William T. Suits Jul 2005

Transitive Inference And Commonly Coded Stimuli, William T. Suits

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This experiment examined whether stimuli that were commonly coded through association with similar outcomes would be treated differently when used in a transitive inference (TI) task than stimuli not commonly coded. A TI task was used in which stimuli were presented to pigeons as pairs (A+B-, B+C-, C+D-, D+E-), and a single pair of stimuli was presented as a test (BD). Pigeons were assigned to four groups in which stimuli were associated with one another along the linear array. For the Within Common Coding Group, the outcomes were arranged so that B and D both received the same outcome (when …

Theta Activity During Navigation In Virtual Environments, Colleen Margaret Moore Jul 2005

Theta Activity During Navigation In Virtual Environments, Colleen Margaret Moore

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Human navigation has gone through many different stages, from guidance by stars to guidance by technology. Theories for performance differences range from differences between individuals, to experience with the environment. Researchers turn to virtual environments during experimentation which are easy to manipulate and easier to measure during navigation. However, fidelity is an issue with regard to transfer of learning to a real world environment. We examined differences in theta activity during navigation in low and high fidelity virtual environments. The researchers recruited thirty-two students between the ages of 18-40 from the university subject pool for voluntary participation. We measured EEG …

Inside The Fairy Ring: Jane Eyre And The Victorian Fairy Tale, Kimberly Alford Jul 2005

Inside The Fairy Ring: Jane Eyre And The Victorian Fairy Tale, Kimberly Alford

English Theses & Dissertations

Focusing on nineteenth century literature in England, this paper explores the relationship of fairy tales to the realist novel. Even though the novels of the time are best known for being grounded firmly in realism, the world of fairies, existing most prominently in nineteenth-century children's literature, crept into novels and stories written for adults. The novel Jane Eyre, frequently discussed regarding its treatment of nineteenth century social issues, contains gothic and romantic elements alongside the realist mode. These elements contribute to a "transformation" of the text into a fairy tale. The novel becomes a fairy tale not in structure alone, …

The Sharper Image: Bringing Irish Nationalist Identity Into Focus, 1880-1923, Meghan M. Ferriter Jul 2005

The Sharper Image: Bringing Irish Nationalist Identity Into Focus, 1880-1923, Meghan M. Ferriter

History Theses & Dissertations

From 1880 to 1923, Irish nationalists created and sustained an independent cultural identity shaped by external and internal forces. British political cartoons reveal key external cultural perceptions of the Irish, while Irish nationalist writings endorse internal concepts of character and project political aims. Irish nationalists present an uninterrupted internal identity in pursuit of autonomy. Images published in Punch, or the London Charivari, provide external factors of identity that evolve from exaggerated threat to trivial concern while the nationalist political demands they represent escalate.

Identity is the product of complex interaction and compromise between external and internal definitions. Individuals …

Fine-Tuning Of Mass-Spring Model Properties For Simulating Realistic Soft Body Deformation, Sylva A. Girtelschmid Jul 2005

Fine-Tuning Of Mass-Spring Model Properties For Simulating Realistic Soft Body Deformation, Sylva A. Girtelschmid

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Obtaining a well behaved soft-tissue model is one of the most challenging and important tasks in the development of surgical simulation systems. Achieving both accurate and real-time deformation response from a soft-tissue model becomes more difficult as the complexity of the represented anatomy and the degree of deformation increases. One common approach to modeling deformable objects is the Mass-Spring (MS) system method. Mass-Spring systems are attractive to real-time applications due to their relatively low computational requirement and ease of implementation. However, their parameter determination is typically done manually, which becomes tedious when accurate approximation to real-world objects is desired. This …

Law Vs. War: Competing Approaches To Fighting Terrorism, Shawn Boyne Ms., Michael German Mr., Paul R. Pillar Dr., Dallas D. Owens Dr. Jul 2005

Law Vs. War: Competing Approaches To Fighting Terrorism, Shawn Boyne Ms., Michael German Mr., Paul R. Pillar Dr., Dallas D. Owens Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The authors address one of the fundamental assumptions underlying the conduct of the War on Terrorism - the nature of our enemy, whether perpetrators of terrorist activities are criminals or soldiers (combatants). Although the United States recognizes that terrorist acts are certainly illegal, it has chosen to treat perpetrators as combatants; but much of the world, including many of our traditional allies, have opted for a purely legalistic approach. Disagreement about assumptions is not the only basis for divergent policies for confronting terrorism, but certainly explains much of our inability to agree on strategies to overcome what we recognize as …

Prolegomenon To An Intellectual History Of Administrative Law In The Twentieth Century: The Case Of John Willis And Canadian Administrative Law, Michael Taggart Jul 2005

Prolegomenon To An Intellectual History Of Administrative Law In The Twentieth Century: The Case Of John Willis And Canadian Administrative Law, Michael Taggart

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The intellectual legal history-the history of ideas--of modern administrative law has yet to be written. The first part of this article suggests that one way to approach this necessary task is to posit the writings of leading administrative law thinkers in the context of cases, controversies, doctrines, events, and movements throughout the twentieth century. The work of pioneer administrative lawyer John Willis is used to exemplify this type of contextualized intellectual legal history. The second part of this article seeks to gauge Willis's influence on the development of Canadian administrative law.

Adr Through A Cultural Lens: How Cultural Values Shape Our Disputing Processes, Julia Ann Gold

Journal of Dispute Resolution

I arrived for my second Nepali language class on time, but the teacher kept chatting about inconsequential things. I was paying by the hour, and we had already spent 25 minutes talking about nothing! A week later, I received an invitation to an art exhibit. The location was "Royal Museum," so that is where I went, only to find an empty building and no people. What had I missed? In my first meeting with the Dean of the Law Campus, we talked about trekking, the upcoming religious holidays, his visit to Seattle two years ago, relatives in the United States, …

Instructions In Inequality: Development, Human Rights, Capabilities, And Gender Violence In Schools, Erika George Jul 2005

Instructions In Inequality: Development, Human Rights, Capabilities, And Gender Violence In Schools, Erika George

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that the international community's gender equality targets will not be realized by 2015 because the problems associated with sexual violence against girls in schools are situated at an intersection of contested conceptual divides between human rights (civil and political liberties) and development aims (social and economic needs). Cracks in the conceptual foundations of both the liberal and utilitarian theories of justice and equality, which support traditional human rights advocacy and economic development plans, respectively render each approach inadequate to fully identify and address the grave danger sexual violence and harassment in schools pose to educational equality. In …

Susceptibility Of Biofilms To Bdellovibrio Bacteriovorus Attack, Daniel Kadouri, George A. O'Toole Jul 2005

Susceptibility Of Biofilms To Bdellovibrio Bacteriovorus Attack, Daniel Kadouri, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Biofilms are communities of microorganisms attached to a surface, and the growth of these surface attached communities is thought to provide microorganisms with protection against a range of biotic and abiotic agents. The capability of the gram-negative predatory bacterium Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus to control and reduce an existing Escherichia coli biofilm was evaluated in a static assay. A reduction in biofilm biomass was observed as early as 3 h after exposure to the predator, and an 87% reduction in crystal violet staining corresponding to a 4-log reduction in biofilm cell viability was seen after a 24-h exposure period. We observed that …

Erythroid Cell-Specific Α-Globin Gene Regulation By The Cp2 Transcription Factor Family, Ho C. Kang, Jui Hyung Chae, Yeon H. Lee, Mi-Ae Park, June Ho Shin, Sung-Hyun Kim, Sang-Kyu Ye, Yoon Shin Cho, Steven Fiering, Chul Geun Kim

Dartmouth Scholarship

We previously demonstrated that ubiquitously expressed CP2c exerts potent erythroid-specific transactivation of alpha-globin through an unknown mechanism. This mechanism is reported here to involve specific CP2 splice variants and protein inhibitor of activated STAT1 (PIAS1). We identify a novel murine splice isoform of CP2, CP2b, which is identical to CP2a except that it has an additional 36 amino acids encoded by an extra exon. CP2b has an erythroid cell-specific transcriptional activation domain, which requires the extra exon and can form heteromeric complexes with other CP2 isoforms, but lacks the DNA binding activity found in CP2a and CP2c. Transcriptional activation of …

This study is a qualitative case study that explores the connection between literacy and gender in a first grade classroom environment. The subjects for this study are twenty first grade students in a regular education classroom located in a southern New Jersey elementary school. For this study, students were observed with the attempt to answer three questions: 1) What gender stereotypes have these first graders internalized coming into the classroom? 2) How are these gender beliefs expressed in the language arts classroom? 3) What are teachers doing to foster these biases in their students? Data collected includes student writings, discussions, …

Vision-Based Hand Shape Identification For Sign Language Recognition, Jonathan Rupe Jun 2005

Vision-Based Hand Shape Identification For Sign Language Recognition, Jonathan Rupe

Theses

This thesis introduces an approach to obtain image-based hand features to accurately describe hand shapes commonly found in the American Sign Language. A hand recognition system capable of identifying 31 hand shapes from the American Sign Language was developed to identify hand shapes in a given input image or video sequence. An appearance-based approach with a single camera is used to recognize the hand shape. A region-based shape descriptor, the generic Fourier descriptor, invariant of translation, scale, and orientation, has been implemented to describe the shape of the hand. A wrist detection algorithm has been developed to remove the forearm …
