Physical Activity And Use Of Suburban Train Stations: An Exploratory Analysis, Michael Greenberg, John Renne, Robert Lane, Jeffrey Zupan Jul 2005

Physical Activity And Use Of Suburban Train Stations: An Exploratory Analysis, Michael Greenberg, John Renne, Robert Lane, Jeffrey Zupan

Journal of Public Transportation

Physical inactivity contributes to a growing proportion of illness and premature death in the United States. Only about 45 percent of Americans meet the recommended national standard for physical activity. Yet, analysis of 300 surveys collected from train riders at three walkable New Jersey suburban train stations showed that 78 percent met the activity guidelines. A new train station that allows these riders to save time in their commute has attracted new riders and has led existing commuters to change their commute. One-third of those surveyed reported additional physical activity primarily because they walked more after leaving the train in …

On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Ingergenerational Equity, Cass R. Sunstein, Arden Rowell Jul 2005

On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Ingergenerational Equity, Cass R. Sunstein, Arden Rowell

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

There is an elaborate debate over the practice of "discounting" regulatory benefits, such as environmental improvements and decreased risks to health and life, when those benefits will not be enjoyed until some future date. Economists tend to think that, as a general rule, such benefits should be discounted in the same way as money; many philosophers and lawyers doubt that conclusion on empirical and normative grounds. Both sides neglect a simple point: Once government has converted regulatory benefits into monetary equivalents, what is being discounted is merely money, not regulatory benefits as such. No one seeks to discount health and …

V-Atpase Expression During Development Of Artemia Franciscana Embryos: Potential Role For Proton Gradients In Anoxia Signaling, Joseph A. Covi, Steven C. Hand Jul 2005

V-Atpase Expression During Development Of Artemia Franciscana Embryos: Potential Role For Proton Gradients In Anoxia Signaling, Joseph A. Covi, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

Under anoxia, Artemia franciscana embryos downregulate metabolic processes and approach an ametabolic state. Entrance into this quiescent state is accompanied by a profound acidification of the intracellular space, and more than two decades of research now clearly demonstrates that this acidification is critical to metabolic downregulation in anoxic embryos. However, the proximal mechanisms responsible for the pH shift remain largely unidentified. Here, we report evidence demonstrating expression of the V-ATPase in encysted embryos and present an argument for its involvement in the intracellular acidification induced by anoxia. We identified a single B-subunit cDNA sharing the greatest degree of sequence similarity …

V-Atpase Inhibition Prevents Recovery From Anoxia In Artemia Franciscana Embryos: Quiescence Signaling Through Dissipation Of Proton Gradients, Joseph A. Covi, W. Dale Treleaven, Steven C. Hand Jul 2005

V-Atpase Inhibition Prevents Recovery From Anoxia In Artemia Franciscana Embryos: Quiescence Signaling Through Dissipation Of Proton Gradients, Joseph A. Covi, W. Dale Treleaven, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

The metabolic downregulation critical for long-term survival of Artemia franciscana embryos under anoxia is mediated, in part, by a progressive intracellular acidification. However, very little is known about the mechanisms responsible for the pH transitions associated with exposure to, and recovery from, oxygen deprivation. In the present study, we demonstrate with 31P-NMR that incubation of intact embryos with the V-ATPase inhibitor bafilomycin A1 severely limits intracellular alkalinization during recovery from anoxia without affecting the restoration of cellular nucleotide triphosphate levels. Based on these data, it appears that oxidative phosphorylation and ATP resynthesis can only account for the first 0.3 pH …

The Regulation Of Fatty Acid Synthase By Stat5a, Jessica C. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Stephens Jul 2005

The Regulation Of Fatty Acid Synthase By Stat5a, Jessica C. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Growth hormone (GH) diminishes adipose tissue mass in vivo and decreases expression and activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS) in adipocytes. GH and prolactin (PRL) are potent activators of STAT5 and exert adipogenic and antiadipogenic effects in adipocytes. In this study, we demonstrate that GH and PRL decrease the mRNA and protein levels of FAS in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. We present evidence that indicates that FAS is repressed at the level of transcription. In addition, PRL responsiveness was shown to exist between -1,594 and -700 of the rat FAS promoter. Moreover, responsiveness to PRL was abolished with mutation of a site …

Terrorism Risk In A Post-9/11 Economy: The Convergence Of Capital Markets, Insurance, And Government Action, Robert J. Rhee Jul 2005

Terrorism Risk In A Post-9/11 Economy: The Convergence Of Capital Markets, Insurance, And Government Action, Robert J. Rhee

UF Law Faculty Publications

September 11 changed the American economy and the global insurance market. The insurance industry no longer covers terrorism risk for "free." The traditional insurance mechanism alone cannot spread the risk of repeated catastrophic losses. Beyond the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002 lingers the questions of a longterm solution and government's role therein. Government can assume different roles: reinsurer, wealth (re)distributor, regulator, or a combination thereof. This article suggests that the government should foster a regulatory and tax environment in which the private sector can develop a capital market solution for terrorism risk. Securitization is an alternative to reinsurance and …

An Anglo-American Rethinks Native American Education: Can We Avoid Yesterday’S Tragedies?, Mitchell J. Moore Jul 2005

An Anglo-American Rethinks Native American Education: Can We Avoid Yesterday’S Tragedies?, Mitchell J. Moore

Essays in Education

“It’s ironic that Indian people are not allowed to be experts in themselves—it’s usually someone else ‘defining’ the Indian” (Pewewardy, 1992, p.5). Tragically, this is an accurate representation of much of the history of Native American education. Major changes have taken place in the last thirty years to correct this tragedy and to return the education of Native Americans to Native Americans. Progress, however has been slow; years of cultural, geographic and educational genocide by Europeans and Non-Indigenous governments have been difficult to overcome. To understand the historical underpinnings of the modern Native American education movement, three general eras of …

Sentence Recognition In Native And Foreign Languages : Comprehension Of Form And Meaning, Sara Elizabeth Sepanski

Master's Theses

The goal of language comprehension is to retrieve and retain the meaning of speech or text. Research with monolinguals has shown that participants' ability to detect structural changes in sentences decreases with time, while their ability to detect meaning changes remains accurate (Sachs, I967). In this study I examined whether this monolingual pattern holds for bilingual speakers in a second language. English-Spanish bilinguals at three different proficiency levels participated in a reading task in which native (LI) and non-native (L2) language sentences were presented. Participants read both LI and L2 sentences and were then tested for their recognition of the …

Erythroid Cell-Specific Α-Globin Gene Regulation By The Cp2 Transcription Factor Family, Ho C. Kang, Jui Hyung Chae, Yeon H. Lee, Mi-Ae Park, June Ho Shin, Sung-Hyun Kim, Sang-Kyu Ye, Yoon Shin Cho, Steven Fiering, Chul Geun Kim Jul 2005

Erythroid Cell-Specific Α-Globin Gene Regulation By The Cp2 Transcription Factor Family, Ho C. Kang, Jui Hyung Chae, Yeon H. Lee, Mi-Ae Park, June Ho Shin, Sung-Hyun Kim, Sang-Kyu Ye, Yoon Shin Cho, Steven Fiering, Chul Geun Kim

Dartmouth Scholarship

We previously demonstrated that ubiquitously expressed CP2c exerts potent erythroid-specific transactivation of alpha-globin through an unknown mechanism. This mechanism is reported here to involve specific CP2 splice variants and protein inhibitor of activated STAT1 (PIAS1). We identify a novel murine splice isoform of CP2, CP2b, which is identical to CP2a except that it has an additional 36 amino acids encoded by an extra exon. CP2b has an erythroid cell-specific transcriptional activation domain, which requires the extra exon and can form heteromeric complexes with other CP2 isoforms, but lacks the DNA binding activity found in CP2a and CP2c. Transcriptional activation of …

Protection Against Experimental Autoimmune Myocarditis Is Mediated By Interleukin-10-Producing T Cells That Are Controlled By Dendritic Cells, Ya Li, Janet S. Heuser, Stanley D. Kosanke, Mark E. Hemric, Madeleine W. Cunningham

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM) can be induced in the Lewis rat by cardiac myosin or its cryptic S2-16 peptide epitope (amino acids1052 to 1076). To investigate cellular mechanisms and the role of antigen-presenting cells in regulation of myocarditis, we induced protection against EAM in Lewis rats by administration of S2-16 peptide in incomplete Freund’s adjuvant (IFA). Protection to EAM was associated with activation of S2-16-reactive splenocytes secreting high levels of interleukin (IL)-10 and reduced levels of interferon- and IL-2. Adoptive transfer of S2-16:IFA-induced splenocytes producing IL-10 suppressed myocarditis induction in syngeneic recipients, suggesting their regulatory cell nature. However, exposure of …

Risk And Consequence Analysis Focused On Biota Transfers Potentially Associated With Surface Water Diversions Between The Missouri River And Red River Basins, Greg Linder, Ed Little, Lynne Johnson, Chad Vishy, Bruce Peacock, Heather Goeddecke

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Section 1 provides a brief overview of the project, including a cursory summary of the history of the “Garrison Diversion” and how that history relates to this work focused on the analysis of risks and consequences potentially associated with interbasin biota transfers. The present study was initiated under the auspices of the Dakota Water Resources Act (DWRA) of 2000, which directed the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a comprehensive study of the water quality and quantity needs of the Red River Valley and the options for meeting those needs. As such, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) requested technical support …

Few studies have examined the water quality impact of manure use in no-tillage systems. A lysimeter study in continuous corn (Zea mays L.) was performed on Maury silt loam (fine, mixed, semiactive, mesic Typic Paleudalf) to evaluate the effect(s) of tillage (no-till [NT] and chisel-disk [CD]), nitrogen fertilizer rate (0 and 168 kg N ha−1), and dairy manure application timing (none, spring, fall, or fall plus spring) on NO3–N, atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine), and alachlor [2-chloro-2′-6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] concentrations in leachate collected at a 90-cm depth. Herbicides were highest immediately after application, declining to less …

The Silencing Of Women: The Irish Abortion Laws And Religion, Rachael Wright Jul 2005

The Silencing Of Women: The Irish Abortion Laws And Religion, Rachael Wright

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay attempts to look at the unfortunate circumstances that surround women in Ireland in regards to abortion. Rather than looking at the pro- and anti-life arguments which are commonly discussed when approaching abortion issues, I have chosen to concentrate on the legal and ethical matters in Ireland that seem to have control over Irish women’s bodies and consequently their personhood. Through the investigation of the changing Irish laws brought about by the Grogan and X cases, it is possible to understand how religious and patriarchal sentiment has continued to suppress women’s personal choice in regards to abortion. By looking …
