Labor Issues In Nebraska Feedyards, Rik R. Smith, Darrell R. Mark Aug 2005

Labor Issues In Nebraska Feedyards, Rik R. Smith, Darrell R. Mark

Cornhusker Economics

Cattle feeders in Nebraska employ significant labor resources to care for and manage the two million cattle on feed in Nebraska. With an average of about one employee for every thousand head of cattle fed, that translates to around 2,000 jobs for rural economies in Nebraska.

Embracing Uncertainty, Complexity And Change: An Eco-Pragmatic Reinvention Of A First Generation Environmental Law, Mary Jane Angelo Aug 2005

Embracing Uncertainty, Complexity And Change: An Eco-Pragmatic Reinvention Of A First Generation Environmental Law, Mary Jane Angelo

ExpressO

ABSTRACT Embracing Uncertainty, Complexity and Change: An Eco-Pragmatic Reinvention of a First Generation Environmental Law Mary Jane Angelo, University of Florida Levin College of Law Recent scientific reports demonstrate that despite more than thirty years of environmental regulation, we are experiencing unprecedented declines in bird and wildlife species, as well as ecosystem services. Pesticides are at least in part to blame for these profound declines. U.S. pesticide law has failed to carryout its mission. Moreover, a number of lawsuits have been filed recently asserting that the registration of certain pesticides is in violation of the federal endangered species act. One …

Close Quarters Privacy And Jewish House Space In Early Modern Polish Cities, Adam Teller Aug 2005

Close Quarters Privacy And Jewish House Space In Early Modern Polish Cities, Adam Teller

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

The following texts were chosen in order to illustrate the implications of the growth in Jewish population in Poland's larger towns during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when the number of Jews grew faster than the non-Jewish authorities would allow the Jewish quarters to expand. This led to an increasing degree of crowding in the Jewish quarter as a whole as well as in individual houses. To illustrate this, some demographic data on the situation in the Jewish quarter of Poznan may be seen in the presentation.

This presentation is for the following text(s):

  • Cracow Community Ordinance of 5355 (1595) …

Post-Translational Regulation Of Adipose Differentiation-Related Protein By The Ubiquitin/Proteasome Pathway, John Tansey Aug 2005

Post-Translational Regulation Of Adipose Differentiation-Related Protein By The Ubiquitin/Proteasome Pathway, John Tansey

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

Adipose differentiation-related protein (ADRP) is localized to lipid droplets in most mammalian cells. ADRP, proposed to regulate
fatty acid mobilization and lipid droplet formation, is linked to lipid accumulation in foam cells of human atherosclerotic
lesions. In this report, we show that ADRP protein accumulates in Chinese hamster ovary fibroblastic cells cultured in the
presence of oleic acid but is destabilized when fatty acid sources are removed from culture serum. The latter effect was blocked
by the proteasome inhibitor MG132, whereas inhibitors of other proteolytic processes were ineffective. Pulse-chase experiments
confirmed that ADRP degradation is inhibited by MG132. Conditions that …

Final Environmental Assessment: Proposed Demolition Of 12 Structures, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, Randal Klein, Kay Winn Aug 2005

Final Environmental Assessment: Proposed Demolition Of 12 Structures, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, Randal Klein, Kay Winn

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Hill AFB proposes to accommodate current United States Air Force (USAF) missions by demolishing 12 structures on Hill AFB. All 12 buildings have both aged and deteriorated to the point they cannot be economically repaired or remodeled. Seven of the 12 buildings would be demolished without being replaced in kind. For five of the 12 buildings, military construction (MILCON) projects would provide new facilities to house the activities that are or were being performed in the deteriorated structures. The proposed action and the no action alternative were both considered in detail. Following the demolition phase, backfill and revegetation operations would …

Caring For "Ryan White": The Fundamentals Of Hiv/Aids Treatment Policy, Jessamyn Taylor

National Health Policy Forum

This background paper provides an overview of the HIV/ AIDS epidemic in the United States and discusses how treatment of the disease and the populations most affected by it have changed over time. The federal government’s domestic and global efforts in prevention, research, and treatment of the disease are highlighted. The paper outlines the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, a set of programs that fund treatment services for uninsured and underinsured individuals living with HIV/AIDS, and places it in the context of other federal programs that fund treatment for HIV/AIDS. Policy issues for Ryan White’s potential congressional …

Portable Probes To Measure Electrical Conductivity And Soil Quality In The Field, S.L. Arnold, John W. Doran, James S. Schepers, Brian J. Wienhold, Daniel Ginting, Brigid Amos, S. Gomes Aug 2005

Portable Probes To Measure Electrical Conductivity And Soil Quality In The Field, S.L. Arnold, John W. Doran, James S. Schepers, Brian J. Wienhold, Daniel Ginting, Brigid Amos, S. Gomes

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soil electrical conductivity (EC) is a useful indicator in managing agricultural systems, but tools for convenient and inexpensive measurements in the field are generally lacking. Handheld conductivity probes were designed to evaluate in-field naturally occurring and human-induced total soluble electrolyte levels in soil and water. The probes were used to survey and monitor EC in the field and to assess soil and water quality as related to environmental stability and sustainable food production. A pencil-sized 16-cm probe (PP) was connected to a handheld Hanna (DiST WP 4) conductivity meter, resulting in an economical, compact, and easy to use device. The …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

This risk assessment has been carried out following the guidelines for Health Risk Analysis entitled “Wild Animal Translocations” prepared by the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre (http://wildlife1.usask.ca). It includes 9 comprehensive appendices of bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal organisms reported from domestic sheep, goats, llamas and wild sheep and mountain goats. The report is a breakdown of those appendices into discussions of organisms of major concern, organisms of unknown concern, organisms of minimal concern, and those that cause no apparent disease, are not transmissible between the species of interest, or do not occur in Canada. Where possible, organisms were assigned …

Cybersecurity, Identity Theft, And The Limits Of Tort Liability, Vincent R. Johnson Aug 2005

Cybersecurity, Identity Theft, And The Limits Of Tort Liability, Vincent R. Johnson

ExpressO

This article considers to what extent database possessors (such as credit card companies and universities) can be held liable for harm caused to data subjects (such as consumers, applicants, and alumni) when information relating to those persons is hacked or otherwise subject to improper access. Addressing common-law and statutory sources (including new legislation in 17 states) the article clearly differentiates the duty to safeguard data from the duty to notify data subjects that the security of their information has been breached. By analogy to the “medical-monitoring damages” which some states award in toxic-exposure cases, the article argues that “security-monitoring damages” …

Mechanisms Underlying The Production Of Carapace Vibrations And Associated Waterborne Sounds In The American Lobster, Homarus Americanus, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Heidi Pye Henninger Aug 2005

Mechanisms Underlying The Production Of Carapace Vibrations And Associated Waterborne Sounds In The American Lobster, Homarus Americanus, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Heidi Pye Henninger

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

American lobsters produce carapace vibrations, which also lead to waterborne acoustic signals, by simultaneously contracting the antagonistic remotor and promotor muscles located at the base of the second antenna. These vibrations have a mean frequency of 183.1 Hz (range 87–261 Hz), range in duration from 68 to 1720 ms (mean 277.1 ms) and lead to waterborne sounds of similar frequencies. Lobsters most often produce these signals using only one pair of muscles at a time and alternate between the muscles of the left and right antennae when making a series of vibrations. Occasionally, they vibrate their carapace by simultaneously contracting …
