Nonlinear Dynamics In Ecosystem Response To Climatic Change: Case Studies And Policy Implications, Virginia R. Burkett, Douglas A. Wilcox, Wilcox Stottlemyer, Wylie Barrow, Dan Fagre, Jill Baron, Jeff Price, Jennifer L. Nielsen, Craig D. Allen, David L. Peterson, Greg Ruggerone, Thomas Doyle Sep 2005

Nonlinear Dynamics In Ecosystem Response To Climatic Change: Case Studies And Policy Implications, Virginia R. Burkett, Douglas A. Wilcox, Wilcox Stottlemyer, Wylie Barrow, Dan Fagre, Jill Baron, Jeff Price, Jennifer L. Nielsen, Craig D. Allen, David L. Peterson, Greg Ruggerone, Thomas Doyle

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Many biological, hydrological, and geological processes are interactively linked in ecosystems. These ecological phenomena normally vary within bounded ranges, but rapid, nonlinear changes to markedly different conditions can be triggered by even small differences if threshold values are exceeded. Intrinsic and extrinsic ecological thresholds can lead to effects that cascade among systems, precluding accurate modeling and prediction of system response to climate change. Ten case studies from North America illustrate how changes in climate can lead to rapid, threshold-type responses within ecological communities; the case studies also highlight the role of human activities that alter the rate or direction of …

Visual & Imaging Arts At Rit: A Survey Of Ntid And Cias Students, Allen Ford Sep 2005

Visual & Imaging Arts At Rit: A Survey Of Ntid And Cias Students, Allen Ford

Theses

The original purpose of this study was to investigate the role of deaf artists on the educational and career choices of deaf students. What it has become is a baseline investigation into role model sources for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students enrolled in visual/imaging arts classes at Rochester Institute of Technology(RIT). To ascertain the degree of role model influence, if any, a thirty-three question survey was administered to approximately 200 college students enrolled in 15 different visual arts classes taught at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) and the College of ImagingArts and Sciences (CIAS). Numerous studies, personal …

Characterization Of Waxy Grain Sorghum Lines In Relation To Granule-Bound Starch Synthase, J. F. Pedersen, S. R. Bean, R. A. Graybosch, S. H. Park, M. Tilley Sep 2005

Characterization Of Waxy Grain Sorghum Lines In Relation To Granule-Bound Starch Synthase, J. F. Pedersen, S. R. Bean, R. A. Graybosch, S. H. Park, M. Tilley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The waxy phenotype, associated with endosperm containing little or no amylose, has been recognized in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) since 1933. Although variants of the waxy gene are well characterized in other cereals, the waxy trait has been assumed to be controlled by a single allele, wx, in sorghum. Recent improvements in technologies encourage re-examination of the waxy sorghums. The objectives of this research were therefore to identify and characterize sorghum lines with differing waxy alleles and to describe the actions of those alleles in crosses. Grain of eight waxy sorghum lines (BTxARG1, BTx630, Tx2907, B.9307, 94C274, …

Cancer Treatment Using Proanp Peptides, David L. Vesely Sep 2005

Cancer Treatment Using Proanp Peptides, David L. Vesely

USF Patents

The present invention includes a method of utilizing four peptide hormones to inhibit theasein the number of human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells (i.e., the type of cancer with the highest mortality, with patients only surviving four months) was observed responsive to treatment. The application of the invention would be to utilize one or more of these peptide hormones alone and/or in combination to treat cancer. The ability of these peptide hormones to decrease the number of adenocarcinoma cells has implications for adenocarcinomas at other sites in the body with the majority of cancers of the breast, colon and prostate also being …

Spatial And Temporal Variations In Epikarst Storage And Flow In South Central Kentucky’S Pennyroyal Plateau Sinkhole Plain, Chris Groves, Carl Bolster, Joe Meiman Sep 2005

Spatial And Temporal Variations In Epikarst Storage And Flow In South Central Kentucky’S Pennyroyal Plateau Sinkhole Plain, Chris Groves, Carl Bolster, Joe Meiman

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

The well-developed karst aquifers of south central Kentucky’s Pennyroyal Plateau are impacted by contamination from animal waste and other agricultural inputs. Understanding fate and transport of these and other contaminants first requires knowledge of flow and storage behaviors within the impacted aquifers, complicated by significant heterogeneity, anisotropy, and rapid temporal variations. Here we report on spatial and temporal variations in vadose zone flow and water chemistry (or quality) within Cave Spring Caverns, Kentucky beneath agricultural lands on a well-developed sinkhole plain. Weekly sampling of three underground waterfalls show statistically significant differences in water quality, though the sites are laterally within …

Protein-Protein Interaction Map Of The Trypanosoma Cruzi Ribosomal P Protein Complex, Maximiliano Juri Ayub, Cristian R. Smulski, Benson Nyambega, Natalia Bercovich, Dan Masiga, Martín P. Vazquez, Carlos F. Aguilar, Mariano J. Levin Sep 2005

Protein-Protein Interaction Map Of The Trypanosoma Cruzi Ribosomal P Protein Complex, Maximiliano Juri Ayub, Cristian R. Smulski, Benson Nyambega, Natalia Bercovich, Dan Masiga, Martín P. Vazquez, Carlos F. Aguilar, Mariano J. Levin

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The large subunit of the eukaryotic ribosome possesses a long and protruding stalk formed by the ribosomal P proteins. Four out of five ribosomal P proteins of Trypanosoma cruzi, TcP0, TcP1α, TcP2α, and TcP2β had been previously characterized. Data mining of the T. cruzi genome data base allowed the identification of the fifth member of this protein group, a novel P1 protein, named P1β. To gain insight into the assembly of the stalk, a yeast two-hybrid based protein interaction map was generated. A parasite specific profile of interactions amongst the ribosomal P proteins of T. cruzi was evident. The TcP0 …
