Journal Writing Within Deaf Education, Clare Cassidy Sep 2005

Journal Writing Within Deaf Education, Clare Cassidy

Theses

Writing has generally always been a source of resentment, aversion and unhappiness for deaf people. It shouldn't be. When one mentions an English writing course, one would involuntarily envision a long class of boring lectures on parts of speech, sentence structures and know their written paper will return all bloody from those red markers. This has to change, the unconscious fear of English within Deaf people affects their academic, personal and social growth.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a divergent role in both cell survival and cell death during ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and associated inflammation. In this study, ROS generation by activated macrophages evoked an intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) transient in endothelial cells that was ablated by a combination of superoxide dismutase and an anion channel blocker. [Ca2+]i store depletion, but not extracellular Ca2+ chelation, prevented [Ca2+]i elevation in response to O2*- that was inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) dependent, and cells lacking the three InsP3 receptor (InsP3R) isoforms failed to display the [Ca2+]i transient. Importantly, the O2*--triggered Ca2+ mobilization preceded a loss in mitochondrial membrane …

Effective Teaching Strategies In Mathematics And Science, Leslie Snider Sep 2005

Effective Teaching Strategies In Mathematics And Science, Leslie Snider

Theses

Seven teaching strategies identified by Sousa (2001) were examined to develop implications to improve teaching in classrooms for deaf students. A literature review and an analysis of my student teaching experience and two videotapes of experienced teachers were related to Sousa's work. These analyses support the recommendations of Sousa that more active, student-centered activities are more effective with deaf learners. Recommendations are provided to teachers based on the literature review.

Sialic Acid Modulation Of Cardiac Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Gating Throughout The Developing Myocardium, Patrick J. Stocker Sep 2005

Sialic Acid Modulation Of Cardiac Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Gating Throughout The Developing Myocardium, Patrick J. Stocker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The proper orchestration of voltage-gated ion channel gating is vital to maintaining normal heart rhythms throughout an animal's lifespan. Voltage-gated sodium channels, Nav, are responsible for the initiation of the cardiac action potential, which leads to cardiac systole. Comparison of neonatal ventricular and atrial myocyte Nav gating with adult indicated that the neonatal ventricular Nav gated following a ~10 mV greater depolarization than did atrial or adult ventricular Nav. In this study I questioned whether development- and/or chamber-dependent changes in Nav-associated functional sialic acids could account for these differences. When desialylated with …

A Bacillus Thuringiensis Isolation Method Utilizing A Novel Stain, Low Selection And High Throughput Produced Atypical Results, Joanne Rampersad-Ammons, David R. Ammons Sep 2005

A Bacillus Thuringiensis Isolation Method Utilizing A Novel Stain, Low Selection And High Throughput Produced Atypical Results, Joanne Rampersad-Ammons, David R. Ammons

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Background

Bacillus thuringiensis is a bacterium known for producing protein crystals with insecticidal properties. These toxins are widely sought after for controlling agricultural pests due to both their specificity and their applicability in transgenic plants. There is great interest in isolating strains with improved or novel toxin characteristics, however isolating B. thuringiensis from the environment is time consuming and yields relatively few isolates of interest. New approaches to B. thuringiensis isolation have been, and continue to be sought. In this report, candidate B. thuringiensis isolates were recovered from environmental samples using a combination of a novel stain, high throughput and …

A Motion Planning Processor On Reconfigurable Hardware, Nuzhet Atay, Burchan Bayazit Sep 2005

A Motion Planning Processor On Reconfigurable Hardware, Nuzhet Atay, Burchan Bayazit

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Motion planning algorithms enable us to find feasible paths for moving objects. These algorithms utilize feasibility checks to differentiate valid paths from invalid ones. Unfortunately, the computationally expensive nature of such checks reduces the effectiveness of motion planning algorithms. However, by using hardware acceleration to speed up the feasibility checks, we can greatly enhance the performance of the motion planning algorithms. Of course, such acceleration is not limited to feasibility checks; other components of motion planning algorithms can also be accelerated using specially designed hardware. A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a great platform to support such an acceleration. …
