Women In Agriculture: Making The Critical Difference, Meg Klosterman Kester Sep 2005

Women In Agriculture: Making The Critical Difference, Meg Klosterman Kester

Cornhusker Economics

In 2002 the Census of Agriculture reported the total number of farm operators was 70,668. Nearly 16,000 of those operators were women, representing 22.5 percent of all operators. Over 3,000 women were designated as principal operators, representing over 6 percent of Nebraska’s 49,355 farms. Because women play a significant role in farm operation in the state, the Women in Agriculture program has grown and flourished over the past 21 years.

Jtt-130, A Microsomal Triglyceride Transfer Protein (Mtp) Inhibitor Lowers Plasma Triglycerides And Ldl Cholesterol Concentrations Without Increasing Hepatic Triglycerides In Guinea Pigs, Dimple Aggarwal, Kristy L West, Tosca L Zern, Sudeep Shrestha, Marcela Vergara-Jimenez, Maria Luz Fernandez

Nutrition Articles

BACKGROUND: Microsomal transfer protein inhibitors (MTPi) have the potential to be used as a drug to lower plasma lipids, mainly plasma triglycerides (TG). However, studies with animal models have indicated that MTPi treatment results in the accumulation of hepatic TG. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether JTT-130, a unique MTPi, targeted to the intestine, would effectively reduce plasma lipids without inducing a fatty liver. METHODS: Male guinea pigs (n = 10 per group) were used for this experiment. Initially all guinea pigs were fed a hypercholesterolemic diet containing 0.08 g/100 g dietary cholesterol for 3 wk. After …

Murine Monoclonal Anti-Idiotype Antibody 11d10 And Methods Of Use Thereof, Malaya Chatterjee, Kenneth A. Foon, Sunil K. Chatterjee Sep 2005

Murine Monoclonal Anti-Idiotype Antibody 11d10 And Methods Of Use Thereof, Malaya Chatterjee, Kenneth A. Foon, Sunil K. Chatterjee

Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics Faculty Patents

The present invention provides a monoclonal anti-idiotype antibody 11D10 that elicits an immune response against a specific epitope of a high molecular weight mucin of human milk fat globule (HMFG) and a hybridoma that produces 11D10. The hybridoma that produces 11D10 was selected by specific procedures. 11D10 induces an immunological response to HMFG in nice, rabbits, monkeys and patients with advanced HMFG-associated tumors. This invention provides compositions derived from polynucleotide sequences encoding the variable light and/or variable heavy regions of monoclonal anti-idiotype antibody 11D10, as well as polypeptides encoded thereby. The invention also provides compositions which can be used in …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The mammalogy program at Texas Tech University officially was established in 1962, when Robert L. Packard joined the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences. As the institution's first mammalogist, Packard took the initiative to develop a strong program of mammalian research and education. Influenced by the successful program built by his mentor, E. Raymond Hall, at the University of Kansas, Packard modeled similar goals for Texas Tech University. Those goals included a strong emphasis on both undergraduate and graduate education and research, with several mammalogy faculty members, and the establishment and growth of a large and active mammal collection.

Sovereignty, Self-Determination, And Environment-Based Cultures: The Emerging Voice Of Indigenous Peoples In International Law, Peter Manus Sep 2005

Sovereignty, Self-Determination, And Environment-Based Cultures: The Emerging Voice Of Indigenous Peoples In International Law, Peter Manus

ExpressO

This article presents a survey of both the rhetoric and applications of international law addressing indigenous peoples' environmental rights. Part I assesses three terms that are widely used in international instruments - sovereignty, human rights, and self-determination - for their applicability to the environment-related interests of indigenous peoples. Part II presents a sixty year litany of international instruments as a means of tracing the evolution of global awareness of the uniquely vulnerable position that indigenous people occupy in the world community in connection with their environmental interests. Part III offers a comparative analysis of the cases Kitok v. Sweden and …

Analyzing Deaf Artists' Artworks: A Curriculum For Middle School Students, Cheryl Murray Sep 2005

Analyzing Deaf Artists' Artworks: A Curriculum For Middle School Students, Cheryl Murray

Theses

This thesis presents a rich context of art information for interpreting artworks of deaf artists. Over the past decade, many artworks have been created by deaf artists. The purpose is to help deaf/hearing children learn about deaf artists and develop critical thinking in a mainstream school. The art curriculum will be presented in Power Point so administrators/educators can have a way to display the art to the students. The background describes how each deaf artist expressed her/his message in their artwork. The curriculum teaches the students how artists use colors, lines shapes, and textures/patterns to express their values and meanings. …

Incorporating Adventure Education Into Your Classroom, Dana Romanello Sep 2005

Incorporating Adventure Education Into Your Classroom, Dana Romanello

Theses

Approaching outdoor adventure and challenge as a way to teach perseverance, skill, teamwork, leadership, and compassionate service was the brain-child of Kurt Hahn, a native to Berlin, Germany. Hahn became aware of the enormous impact that German submarines had on British ships in the North Sea during World War II. Drawing from his experiences as an educator, he and a team of others devised a program of intensive training for British Seamen. The program became known as Outward Bound, from the nautical term for a ship leaving port on a sea journey. (Sakofs& Armstrong, 1996)

Encouraging Communication With Deaf Children Through Visual Art Activities, Kamila Riscili Sep 2005

Encouraging Communication With Deaf Children Through Visual Art Activities, Kamila Riscili

Theses

An educational product has been developed based on a review of the literature in the field of art therapy with a focus on how art therapy may affect the communication of deaf children. A literature review has indicated that art therapy, when conducted with hearing and deaf children, has facilitated expression and communication. This has occurred through transference of feelings from the right, visualspatial and creative hemisphere of the brain to the left hemisphere, which includes conceptual and intellectual thinking as well as the 'language function.' Based on these findings, it is projected that art therapy may alleviate some of …
