A Phylogenetic Analysis Of Vanzolinius Heyer, 1974 (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae): Taxonomic And Life History Implications, Rafael O. De Sá, W. Ronald Heyer, Arley Camargo

Biology Faculty Publications

The validity of the monotypic leptodactylid frog genus Vanzolinius Heyer, 1974 has been questioned recently. We explore the relationship of Vanzolinius discodactylus within the cluster of closely related genera Adenomera, Leptodacylus, and Lithodytes with both morphological and molecular data sets. Morphological and combined morphological and molecular data were analyzed using maximum parsimony; molecular data sets were analyzed with maximum likelihood methods. The resultant relationships are unambiguous in Vanzolinius being imbedded within Leptodactylus. In order to maintain Leptodactylus as a monophyletic genus, Vanzolinius is placed in the synonymy of Leptodactylus Fitzinger, 1826. The implications of relationships analyzed in …

Review Of Amphibians And Reptiles Of Montana By J. Kirwin Werner, Bryce A. Maxell, Paul Hendricks, And Dennis L. Flath, Anthony Russell

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume documents comprehensively Montana's herpetofauna in a field guide/natural history format. As such, it joins other relatively recently published guides to the herpetofaunas of the northern Great Plains states and provinces that border Montana to provide extensive background information about amphibians and reptiles across this broad region. Assembled by a consortium of authors with a wealth of first-hand experience, the guide is profusely illustrated with color photographs of habitats and animals in the field, almost all of good to excellent quality, though a few are too small or indistinct to illustrate clearly the features being considered. For the most …

Review Of Damselflies Of Alberta: Flying Neon Toothpicks In The Grass By John Acorn, Dennis Lehmkuhl

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book is small enough to fit into a field pack or be rolled up and put in your pocket, but don't be misled by the size: it contains many compelling topics in addition to identification and species accounts. Of special interest is the chapter on the history of damselfly study in Alberta. Settlement of many areas of the Canadian and American Plains occurred about a hundred years ago, and the pattern was similar in many places-avid amateurs or professional biologists began the study of local faunas, and the stories of their personal lives and experiences in those pioneer years …

Redemptive Memory: The Christianization Of The Holocaust In America, Laura Bender Herron Oct 2005

Redemptive Memory: The Christianization Of The Holocaust In America, Laura Bender Herron

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

There has been a considerable debate among historians concerning the role of the Holocaust in the American collective memory. Since the watershed year 1993, when the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum opened its doors on the Mall in Washington, DC, and the film Schindler’s List debuted, the level of awareness of the Holocaust in the public mind has been at an all-time high in the United States. The question at the heart of this academic discussion is how Americans have come to identify so strongly with an experience that occurred over sixty years ago, on foreign shores, to a group …

Ultra High-Speed Sorting, James F. Leary Oct 2005

Ultra High-Speed Sorting, James F. Leary

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Background: Cell sorting has a history dating back approximately 40 years. The main limitation has been that, although flow cytometry is a science, cell sorting has been an art during most of this time. Recent advances in assisting technologies have helped to decrease the amount of expertise necessary to perform sorting. Methods: Droplet-based sorting is based on a controlled disturbance of a jet stream dependent on surface tension. Sorting yield and purity are highly dependent on stable jet break-off position. System pressures and orifice diameters dictate the number of droplets per second, which is the sort rate limiting step because …

Review Of Playas Of The Great Plains By Loren M. Smith, James H. Locklear

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Loren M. Smith and his students at Texas Tech have been studying the ecology of playas for two decades. Playas of the Great Plains is the fruit of that work.
Playas (or playa lakes) are shallow, circular basins that hold water following rainstorms but usually dry up later in the growing season. These unique, ephemeral wetlands occur in arid and semi -arid environments around the world, but nowhere more abundantly than on the tablelands of the Southern Great Plains of North America.

Incitement In The Mosques: Testing The Limits Of Free Speech And Religious Liberty, Kenneth Lasson

All Faculty Scholarship

In times of terror and tension, civil liberties are at their greatest peril. Nowadays, no individual rights are more in jeopardy than the freedoms of speech and religion. This is true particularly for followers of Islam, whose leaders have become increasingly radical in both their preaching and practice. "Kill the Jews!" and "Kill the Americans!" are chants heard regularly in many Middle Eastern mosques, as frightful echoes of the fatwa are issued by today's quintessential terrorist, Osama bin Laden. The incitement continues unabated to this day. In April of 2004, for example, a Muslim preacher at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in …

Frame-Shifting In Humor And Irony, L. David Ritchie Oct 2005

Frame-Shifting In Humor And Irony, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Coulson's (2001) analysis of humor as "frame-shifting" is extended to irony and compared to other current theories of humor and irony, including Giora's (2003) graded salience model. It is argued that the effects of humor and irony often depend on a subversive relationship between the initial and alternative frames, which adds to both cognitive and social meaning; understanding these effects requires consideration of the expansion of common ground (Clark, 1996) and relevance effects (Sperber & Wilson, 1986) triggered by the shift from a culturally licensed to a subversive frame. Reanalysis of several examples from recent studies in the light of …

Biodemography Of A Long-Lived Tephritid: Reproduction And Longevity In A Large Cohort Of Female Mexican Fruit Flies, Anastrepha Ludens, James R. Carey, Pablo Liedo, Hans-Georg Müller, Jane-Ling Wang, Damla Senturke, Lawrence G. Harshman

Lawrence G. Harshman Publications

Age of sexual maturity, daily and lifetime reproductive rates, and life span were recorded in a laboratory cohort of Mexican fruit flies consisting of over 1100 females maintained individually. The results revealed that, relative to the medfly, the Mexfly is slower maturing (14 vs 17 days), more fecund (1400 vs 650–1100 eggs/female), and longer lived (50 vs 35 days). The results reinforced the generality of several earlier findings on the medfly including the deceleration of mortality at older ages and the weakness of the correlation between the rate of egg laying at early ages and both subsequent reproduction and remaining …

Agroecology Of The Naso-Teribe: The Management And Conservation Of Traditional Agroecological Systems, Maisie Ganz Oct 2005

Agroecology Of The Naso-Teribe: The Management And Conservation Of Traditional Agroecological Systems, Maisie Ganz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The term “agroecology” is used to describe the sustainable design and management of agricultural systems by the application of ecological concepts and principles. The resulting agroecosystems, often practiced by indigenous or poor farmers in marginal environments without access to external technologies, are systems of food production that integrate cultivated crops into surrounding ecosystems. The Naso-Teribe, an indigenous community of approximately 3,800 individuals living in the forests of western Panama, practice a complex agroecological system. The Naso farmers’ agricultural practices contribute to, and are dependent on, the biodiversity of resources available. The ways in which Naso farmers manage, maintain, and preserve …

Periodismo Medioambiental, Peter Weisberg

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

INTAG is a community run, environmental newspaper that serves the county of Intag on the western slopes of the Andes in northern Ecuador. For the month of November 2005, I worked for the newspaper, writing articles and researching ways in which the paper can increase communication among different organizations that formed over the last eleven years of resistance to proposed mining. After interviewing eleven community leaders, I conclude that the paper can 1) do more to elicit the participation of groups that are currently inactive and 2) maintain its ecological position while gaining credibility by constructively criticizing the anti-mining community …

Molt Strategies And Age Differences In Migration Timing Among Autumn Landbird Migrants In Southwestern Idaho, Jay D. Carlisle, Gregory S. Kaltenecker, David L. Swanson Oct 2005

Molt Strategies And Age Differences In Migration Timing Among Autumn Landbird Migrants In Southwestern Idaho, Jay D. Carlisle, Gregory S. Kaltenecker, David L. Swanson

Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations

Intraspecific patterns of autumn migration timing are not well known, particularly in the western United States. Here, we (1) describe autumn migration timing and age ratios of landbird migrants in southwestern Idaho, (2) examine differences in timing among age and sex classes, and (3) demonstrate how prebasic molt strategies affect migration timing differences between age classes. As a group, Neotropical migrants were most common from late July through early September, whereas temperate migrants were most common from mid-September into early October. Proportion of hatch-year birds was 74.5% for all migrants combined and ranged from 33.3% to 100% for individual species. …
