Art Interpretation: Constructing Meaning Through Poetic And Non-Verbal Responses., Lori A. Mcpherson Jan 2005

Art Interpretation: Constructing Meaning Through Poetic And Non-Verbal Responses., Lori A. Mcpherson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Critical inquiry and personal response models with regard to art interpretation are composed of many forms of activities and response exercises that are both poetic and non-verbal. Students have been responding to art using critical inquiry, but there has been relatively nothing written in regard to poetic expression and non-verbal responding in the teaching of art interpretation. This project will discuss how a poetic model (the use of figurative language to form ideas about constructing personal meaning in a work of art) and a non-verbal model (creating a visual response to exemplify meaning) work together in the construction of meaning. …

Prostaglandin F(2alpha) (Pgf(2alpha))-Independent And -Dependent Regulation Of The Bovine Luteal Endothelin System., Ekta Choudhary Jan 2005

Prostaglandin F(2alpha) (Pgf(2alpha))-Independent And -Dependent Regulation Of The Bovine Luteal Endothelin System., Ekta Choudhary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The genes of the endothelin system are the potential targets for regulation by prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) and have been studied in greater detail. The effects of a luteolytic dose of PGF2α on the mRNA encoding endothelin converting enzyme-1 (ECE1), pre-pro endothelin-1 (ET-1) and the ET receptors ETA, ETB, and in bovine corpus luteum (CL) collected during the early, mid or late luteal phases were examined. The effects of treatment with PGF2α on ECE-1 protein, big ET-1 and the biologically active mature ET-1 were examined. Most importantly, the direct activity of ECE-1 was determined. Based on the results it is suggested …

Management Of The Suckled Post-Partum Beef Cows: Pasture-Based Weaning System., John F. Odhiambo Jan 2005

Management Of The Suckled Post-Partum Beef Cows: Pasture-Based Weaning System., John F. Odhiambo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Low grain prices and recurrent periods of drought have elicited interest in early weaning. Calves can efficiently utilize feed for weight gain when it is fed directly, rather than through their dams. This study evaluated calf response in three weaning systems (experiment 1) and profiles of body energy reserves in early-weaned beef cows (experiment 2). Treatment x year, and calf sex x year interaction (P < 0.05) were observed for calf weight gain. These interactions underscored the need for constant readjustments in management systems that incorporate early weaning in their programs. In experiment 2, body weight and condition score of cows were affected marginally (P = 0.06) by early weaning, whereas ribfat and rumpfat differed (P < 0.05) between earlyweaned and control cows. These findings indicated that subjective methods (body weight and condition score) should be used in combination with more objective measurements (ribfat and/or rumpfat) for accurate evaluation of energy status of beef cows. Cows of various ages responded differently to early weaning. Three to five-year-old cows exhibited greater response to early weaning as opposed to 2-year-olds and cows > 5 years of age, indicating that profit potential of the cow-calf operation can be improved by altered management of middle-aged cows.

The Effects Of Roads And Culverts On Stream And Stream-Side Salamander Communities In Eastern West Virginia., Ryan Lee Ward Jan 2005

The Effects Of Roads And Culverts On Stream And Stream-Side Salamander Communities In Eastern West Virginia., Ryan Lee Ward

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Roads and culverts have many effects on stream salamanders. We examined 120 culvert crossings in the Shavers Fork and Dry Fork watersheds in eastern West Virginia. Complete barriers to salamander passage occurred at 55.0% of the sites visited and partial barriers at 34.2%. Analyses showed that 20.6% of the total stream length in the Dry Fork watershed and 18.4% in the Shavers Fork watershed were isolated by barriers. We conducted salamander sampling at 16 streams and used Akaikeís Information Criterion to select the best a priori models explaining salamander diversity, richness, and abundance. Roads benefited disturbance tolerant species while negatively …

Five Powerful Practices For Using Technology To Enhance Teaching And Learning In Higher Education, Charles R. Graham, Richard E. West

Faculty Publications

This presentation reports the findings from our investigation of the professors designated as the most innovative users of technology at our university. After seeking nominations from department heads, we selected thirty-five of the most successful and innovative professors as case studies. After interviewing these cases, and in some instances observing their classes, we identified five major patterns that represented the positive impacts technology was having on their instruction. These patterns were evident in several cases across many different disciplines, indicating they might be generalizable to many different situations and contexts. In our interviews, we identified what technologies these professors were …

From International Sanitary Conventions To Global Health Security: The New International Health Regulations, David P. Fidler

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In May 2005, the World Health Organization adopted the new International Health Regulations (IHR), which constitute one of the most radical and far-reaching changes to international law on public health since the beginning of international health cooperation in the mid-nineteenth century. This article comprehensively analyses the new IHR by examining the history of international law on infectious disease control, the IHR revision process, the substantive changes contained in the new IHR and concerns regarding the future of the new IHR. The article demonstrates why the new IHR constitute a seminal event in the relationship between international law and public health …

The Effects Of Uv-B Radiation On The Growth And Physiology Of Non-Agricultural Plant Species Under Changing Environmental Conditions., Chintamani S. Manish Jan 2005

The Effects Of Uv-B Radiation On The Growth And Physiology Of Non-Agricultural Plant Species Under Changing Environmental Conditions., Chintamani S. Manish

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I investigated whether seedlings of non-agricultural plants exposed to varying levels of UV-B exposure had altered growth, physiological, and tissue chemistry responses under changing environmental conditions. In a field experiment, using a modulated UV-B lamp bank system, elevated UV-B did not significantly alter the total biomass of the 6 plant species that were studied, and only Quercus rubra showed a trend towards some sensitivity to UV-B. In two species—Platanus occidentalis and Setaria faberii—I found an increase in the production of UV-B absorbing compounds under elevated UV-B while two grasses—S. faberii and Elymus virginicus—had significantly decreased C:N ratios under elevated UV-B. …

The Effects Of The Route Of Viral Infection On The Balance Of T Helper Immune Responses., Alicia R. Mathers Jan 2005

The Effects Of The Route Of Viral Infection On The Balance Of T Helper Immune Responses., Alicia R. Mathers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The majority of pathogens enter the host through mucosal surfaces. Therefore, it stands to reason that production of protective mucosal immunity is a desirable outcome following vaccination for those infections. However, only a few mucosal vaccines have been developed to date, in part because of a general lack of understanding of mucosal immunity. The research presented in this dissertation is focused on the comparison of mucosal and systemic immunizations as a means of contributing to the understanding of how mucosal immune responses are induced. There is evidence that mucosal immunization can skew the balance of T helper (Th) 1 and …

Cytochrome P450 1a-Substrate Interactions: Determinants Of Substrate Selectivity And Stereo- And Regiospecificity Of Oxidation., Spencer Snyder Ericksen Jan 2005

Cytochrome P450 1a-Substrate Interactions: Determinants Of Substrate Selectivity And Stereo- And Regiospecificity Of Oxidation., Spencer Snyder Ericksen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cytochromes P450 comprise a ubiquitous superfamily of heme-thiolate enzymes, considered among the most versatile biological catalysts known. Structure-function relationships of P450s are of particular interest to those attempting to elucidate such aspects of xenobiotic metabolism as substrate selectivity and regiospecific oxidations. We studied two members of the P450 1A subfamily, P450 1A1 and 1A2, found in highest abundance in lung and liver tissues, respectively. These enzymes may have an important link to cancer, as both are known to regiospecifically activate procarcinogenic substrates. To gain a better understanding of structure-function relationships in these enzymes, we applied a combination of site-directed mutagenesis, …

The Role Of The Rx Homeobox Gene In Development Of The Eye And Pituitary Gland., Elena A. Kozhemyakina Jan 2005

The Role Of The Rx Homeobox Gene In Development Of The Eye And Pituitary Gland., Elena A. Kozhemyakina

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rx is a paired-like homeodomain transcription factor that is expressed in the developing eyes, ventral forebrain, hypothalamus, posterior pituitary, and the pineal gland. In adults, Rx is primarily expressed in the neural retina, ciliary bodies, pineal gland, hypothalamus, and posterior pituitary. Rx mutations in multiple species are associated with anophthalmia. During the course if this work, we identified a human patient with anophthalmia and sclerocornea that carries mutations in the RX gene. One allele of the patient carries a Q147X mutation, which causes a truncation of the RX protein at the beginning of the homeodomain. The other allele possesses an …

Inhibition Modifies The Effects Of Slow Calcium-Activated Potassium Channels On Epileptiform Activity In A Neuronal Network Model, Keun-Hang Susan Yang, Piotr J. Franaszczuk, Gregory K. Bergey Jan 2005

Inhibition Modifies The Effects Of Slow Calcium-Activated Potassium Channels On Epileptiform Activity In A Neuronal Network Model, Keun-Hang Susan Yang, Piotr J. Franaszczuk, Gregory K. Bergey

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Generation of epileptiform activity typically results from a change in the balance between network excitation and inhibition. Experimental evidence indicates that alterations of either synaptic activity or intrinsic membrane properties can produce increased network excitation. The slow Ca2+-activated K+ currents (sI AHP) are important modulators of neuronal firing rate and excitability and have important established and potential roles in epileptogenesis. While the effects of changes in sI AHP on individual neuronal excitability are readily studied and well established, the effects of such changes on network behavior are less well known. The experiments here utilize a defined small network model of …

Conservation Genetics Of Blue-Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma Laterale) In The Upper Midwest, Jonathan Michael Eastman Jan 2005

Conservation Genetics Of Blue-Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma Laterale) In The Upper Midwest, Jonathan Michael Eastman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Arguably, the primary intention of conservation genetics is to preserve allelic variability within and among populations, because a lack of genetic diversity may adversely effect the viability of a population subjected to variable environmental conditions. The influence of such evolutionary processes as genetic erosion and inbreeding depression may be pronounced for increasingly small and isolated populations. Blue-spotted salamanders (Ambystoma laterale), though widespread and relatively common throughout northeastern North America, are marked by a pair of peripherally isolated populations at the southwestern boundary of the range. These populations are putative relicts of post-glacial isolation and thus provide a model from which …

What Does Religion Have To Do With Freedom Of Conscience?, Steven D. Smith Jan 2005

What Does Religion Have To Do With Freedom Of Conscience?, Steven D. Smith

University of Colorado Law Review

Although the framers of the First Amendment chose to protect "the free exercise of religion" and deleted language about 'freedom of conscience, " a widely-held modern assumption maintains that constitutional protection should extend to conscience generally, not just to religious exercise. But is this extension defensible? This article considers three classic rationales for religious freedom-the "separate spheres" rationale, the 'futility" rationale, and the "higher duties" rationale-and asks whether they justify protection of non-religious conscience. The article concludes that all of the classic rationales are vulnerable to serious objections. However, a somewhat different rationale, which might be called the "personhood" rationale, …

A Practical And Pragmatic Approach To Freedom Of Conscience, Martin H. Belsky Jan 2005

A Practical And Pragmatic Approach To Freedom Of Conscience, Martin H. Belsky

University of Colorado Law Review

Using a series of anecdotes and illustrations, the author posits that freedom of conscience, broadly defined, can only be protected, if at all, by assertive individual and group action. Such action must be not just against government interference but also against nongovernmental or private activities as well as intimidation. Professor Belsky urges individual balancing of the freedom of conscience and other legal, governmental and societal interests. This balancing is a form of "constitutionalism," and when necessary must be followed up by enforcement through personal action.
