Maternal Smoking Contributes To The Development Of Childhood Adhd, Kelly Sadowski, Thomas G. Parish Jan 2005

Maternal Smoking Contributes To The Development Of Childhood Adhd, Kelly Sadowski, Thomas G. Parish

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

A review of the literature was undertaken concerning maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy. A link between this behavior and an increased incidence of behavioral disorders, specifically Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) was explored. The review was performed using Medline, CINAHL, and Pubmed. Search terms used were maternal smoking, ADHD, and behavioral disorders. Maternal smoking during pregnancy appears to be associated with an increased incidence of ADHD in childhood. A direct causative relationship has not been established. However, after controlling for other potential variables such as maternal age, education and socioeconomic status, it can be concluded that smoking during pregnancy is associated …

Agriculture, Aesthetic Appreciation And The Worlds Of Nature, Pauline Von Bonsdorff Jan 2005

Agriculture, Aesthetic Appreciation And The Worlds Of Nature, Pauline Von Bonsdorff

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Agriculture has received relatively little attention in environmental aesthetics, given its importance culturally for the physical sustenance of societies and from an eco-system perspective. In this article I take some steps towards developing a life-world approach to the agricultural landscape, where the intimate and long-term relationship between farmer and land is understood as having the potential for being a norm rather than the opposite of an aesthetic appreciation of landscape. This requires a narrative understanding of landscape, where culture and nature are seen as plural and relative to each other. I claim that the aesthetic competence of the farmer is …

'Man Has Always Danced': Forays Into The Origins Of An Art Largely Forgotten By Philosophers, Maxine Sheets-Johnstone Jan 2005

'Man Has Always Danced': Forays Into The Origins Of An Art Largely Forgotten By Philosophers, Maxine Sheets-Johnstone

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Philosophers have had comparatively little to say of the art of dance, a surprising fact given the range of people both inside and outside of dance who have claimed that 'man has always danced.' This essay attempts to substantiate this claim by an inquiry into the origins of dance, its focal attention being on the word always and any linkage to males deriving from that focal point of attention. It begins with evolutionary considerations in the form of courtship displays, behaviors finely and extensively described by Darwin, and goes on to consider displays by chimpanzees in particular. These considerations point …

Ancient Hatred And Its Contemporary Manifestation: The Torture Of Lesbians, Susan Hawthorne Jan 2005

Ancient Hatred And Its Contemporary Manifestation: The Torture Of Lesbians, Susan Hawthorne

Journal of Hate Studies

This paper looks at a number of different elements that make up the experience of torture by lesbians in the contemporary world. I draw together elements of popular culture, along with testimonies by lesbians, concerning torture in diverse countries, as well as citing some historical sources. I examine the justifications and excuses given for torture, including the view that rape is a normal part of heterosexual activity. I argue that domination is exemplified in the punishment of lesbians as outsiders in patriarchal culture, in particular when groups and nations go to war.I also look at the way in which arguments …

Effects Of A Proteolytic Feed Enzyme On Intake, Digestion, Ruminal Fermentation, And Milk Production, Jong-Su Eun, K. A. Beauchemin Jan 2005

Effects Of A Proteolytic Feed Enzyme On Intake, Digestion, Ruminal Fermentation, And Milk Production, Jong-Su Eun, K. A. Beauchemin

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

The effects of exogenous proteolytic enzyme (EPE) on intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and lactational performance were determined using 8 lactating Holstein cows in a double 4 ×4 Latin square experiment with a 2 ×2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Diets based on barley silage and alfalfa hay as the forage sources were formulated to maintain different forage to concentrate ratios [60:40 vs. 34:66, dry matter (DM) basis]. Four dietary treatments were tested: high forage (HF) without EPE (HF−EPE), HF with EPE (HF+EPE), low forage (LF) without EPE (LF–EPE), and LF with EPE (LF+EPE). The EPE, which contained proteolytic activity but negligible …

A Comparison Of Seagrass Communities At Varying Proximity To A Low-Density Mussel-Line Aquaculture In King George Sound, Western Australia, John A. Eyres

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Increasingly mussel-line aquaculture is recognised as a potential threat to seagrass. Sites suitable for mussel-line aquaculture are often in sheltered waters containing seagrass. Despite this; few studies have examined the risk of mussel-line aquaculture to seagrass ecosystems. The objective of this study is to determine how low-density, mussel-line aquaculture might influence the underlying seagrass ecosystem.

A Colonial Reading Of Recent Jurisprudence: Sparrow, Delgamuukw And Haida Nation, Gordon Christie Jan 2005

A Colonial Reading Of Recent Jurisprudence: Sparrow, Delgamuukw And Haida Nation, Gordon Christie

All Faculty Publications

Throughout Canada's long colonial relationship with Aboriginal nations, the Crown and the judiciary have worked in tandem. Historically, executive and legislative arms of government developed and implemented dispossessive and oppressive colonial policies and legal regimes, while the courts consciously developed conceptual frameworks meant to justify the taking of lands and the denial of Aboriginal sovereignty. This essay explores judicial attempts to justify the taking of lands and the denial of Aboriginal sovereignty, with the focus on how doctrinal law has conceived the transition from a world in which collective understandings of Aboriginal nations define the nature of their land interests …

Private Property And Tax Policy In A Libertarian World: A Critical Review, David G. Duff Jan 2005

Private Property And Tax Policy In A Libertarian World: A Critical Review, David G. Duff

All Faculty Publications

The idea that taxes involve the confiscation of private property is widely held in popular thinking and scholarly writing. This article challenges the libertarian foundations of this assumption by critically examining libertarian theories of private property and their implications for tax policy. Part II summarizes the leading libertarian theories of private property, reviewing John Locke's argument in the Second Treatise of Government and Robert Nozick's account in Anarchy, State, and Utopia. Part III examines the implications of these libertarian theories for tax policy, considering libertarian prescriptions for substantive tax measures as well as institutional arrangements that affect tax policy outcomes. …

Identification Of Oct-2 As A Mediator Of Lead Neurotoxicity, Saleh Abdulrahman Bakheet Jan 2005

Identification Of Oct-2 As A Mediator Of Lead Neurotoxicity, Saleh Abdulrahman Bakheet

Open Access Dissertations

Lead exposure is highly neurotoxic, particularly to the developing brain. A potential mechanism through which lead could precipitate cerebral damage is by perturbations in the regulation of genes mediated by transcription factors involved in neural development. Macroarray screening analysis was conducted in vivo in an attempt to identify novel transcription factors that are involved in the response to lead exposure in the hippocampus of developing rats. Oct-2 was identified as a novel transcription factor prominently induced by lead. Lead-induced elevation of Oct-2 was confirmed by RT-PCR analysis and the functional properties of Oct-2 were examined using EMSA. We found that …

Obesity And Colorectal Cancer And The Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs And Behaviors Related To Colorectal Cancer Prevention Among Non-Hispanic Black Women In Rhode Island, Kathleen Mary Cullinen Jan 2005

Obesity And Colorectal Cancer And The Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs And Behaviors Related To Colorectal Cancer Prevention Among Non-Hispanic Black Women In Rhode Island, Kathleen Mary Cullinen

Open Access Dissertations

Obesity is an established risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC). Numerous studies have linked diets low in fruits and vegetables and decreased physical activity, risk factors for obesity, with increased cancer risk. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of obesity on CRC mortality; the behavioral, socioeconomic and demographic predictors of obesity; and the knowledge attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of a Rhode Island population identified at high risk for both obesity and CRC. The first study tested a model hypothesis that a diet low in fruits and vegetables, decreased physical activity, and obesity as defined by a …

Quantitative Analyses Of F+ Specific Rna Coliphages, Marek Kirs Jan 2005

Quantitative Analyses Of F+ Specific Rna Coliphages, Marek Kirs

Open Access Dissertations

Microbial contamination of coastal waters poses a significant risk to human health through recreational exposure and consumption of shellfish. Current protocols for assessing the magnitude of microbial contamination in coastal waters cannot distinguish between human and non-human sources. Therefore, there is a critical need at local, regional and national levels for a method that allows reliable discrimination of human and non-human microbial contamination (microbial source tracking). F+ specific RNA coliphages (Leviviridae) have been suggested as a indicator organism for microbial source tracking. Because subgroup II and III are predominantly associated with human, and subgroup I and IV are predominantly associated …

The Role Of Planning In Marine Resource Management: The Effect Of Differing Legislative Mandates On The Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan, Shannon Olivia Marie Bettridge Jan 2005

The Role Of Planning In Marine Resource Management: The Effect Of Differing Legislative Mandates On The Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan, Shannon Olivia Marie Bettridge

Open Access Dissertations

Natural resource management laws mandate that Federal agencies must develop and implement plans to protect living and non-living resources. Occasionally these laws overlap in their jurisdiction of marine species, subjecting the resource in question to the requirements of more than one Federal statute. This dissertation examines the planning directives of three Federal resource laws: the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, and the Endangered Species Act of 1973, to identify procedural and substantive conflicts between their mandates. In the U.S., Atlantic large whale protection comes under the purview of the three environmental statutes …

An Assessment Of The Habitat Quality And Nutritional Intake Of North Atlantic Right Whales In Cape Cod Bay, Amy Susanna Delorenzo Jan 2005

An Assessment Of The Habitat Quality And Nutritional Intake Of North Atlantic Right Whales In Cape Cod Bay, Amy Susanna Delorenzo

Open Access Dissertations

Cape Cod Bay is the only known winter feeding ground of the North Atlantic right whale, a seriously endangered species, and is thus a critical habitat for right whales. As with most coastal ecosystems, Cape Cod Bay is a dynamic system with a high degree of variability in both physical and biological parameters. However, the extent of these fluctuations and their effect on the suitability of the bay as a right whale feeding ground is not known. This study was conducted to address variability in the biological and physical environment of the bay on different temporal and spatial scales and …

Energetic Constraints On Diapause In Calanus Finmarchicus: Implications For Population Dynamics In The Gulf Of Maine, Whitley Joseph Saumweber Jan 2005

Energetic Constraints On Diapause In Calanus Finmarchicus: Implications For Population Dynamics In The Gulf Of Maine, Whitley Joseph Saumweber

Open Access Dissertations

Deep basins in the Gulf of Maine act as refuge for a large population of resting Calanus finmarchicus during the summer and fall. Dynamics of this population are not well understood, however, and loss terms from advection and starvation may be large. A three part study was therefore undertaken to determine potential diapause duration in C. finmarchicus , monitor changes in the summer-fall population, and to define the relative importance of energetic limitation as a control on C. finmarchicus population dynamics. Six standard stations were sampled in and around the Gulf of Maine on a series of four research cruises …

Bone Dispersion, Weathering, And Scavenging Of Cattle Bones, Melinda Potmesil Jan 2005

Bone Dispersion, Weathering, And Scavenging Of Cattle Bones, Melinda Potmesil

Nebraska Anthropologist

In this research project, the goal was to study the pattern of disbursement of cattle bones from the site of death, observe any signs of scavenger marks and categorize the degree of weathering on the bones. In order to have a comparative data set, three sites with different characteristics were chosen. The three sites were chosen because of the ability to date the death of each cow, the length of time between each death, and the different locations, which each animal died The oldest site was a one-year-old yearling heifer which died in May of 1992. The next site was …

The Meaning Of Moscow: "Non-Lethal" Weapons And International Law In The Early 21st Century, David P. Fidler Jan 2005

The Meaning Of Moscow: "Non-Lethal" Weapons And International Law In The Early 21st Century, David P. Fidler

Articles by Maurer Faculty

At the intersection of new weapon technologies and international humanitarian law, so-called "non-lethal" weapons have become an area of particular interest. This article analyses the relationship between "non-lethal" weapons and international law in the early 21st century by focusing on the most seminal incident to date in the short history of the "non-lethal" weapons debate, the use of an incapacitating chemical to end a terrorist attack on a Moscow theatre in October 2002. This tragic incident has shown that rapid technological change will continue to stress international law on the development and use of weaponry but in ways more politically …

Investigation Of The Effects Of Thermal Enrichment And Acid Mine Drainage On Sensitive Aquatic Biota In The Stony River, Grant County, West Virginia., Christopher D. Horn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent surveys have indicated that populations of fishes and crayfish are small in the Stony River, Grant Co., WV. The Stony River is influenced by thermal enrichment and acid mine drainage (AMD) within a 13 km stream reach, downstream of Mt. Storm Lake. In an attempt to determine the influence of each anthropogenic disturbance on these affected taxa, studies of their distribution and survival were undertaken. A crayfish trapping survey was conducted along a gradient of thermal and AMD influences in the Stony River system. Cambarus bartonii was the only species captured, although two subspecies of C. bartonii living in …

This paper presents the findings of an investigation to determine whether of not there is a difference in hospitalized adolescents and non-hospitalized adolescents. The participants were 60 adolescents between the ages of 12 to 18 years. Their fears, stressors, and coping skills were evaluated by using three instruments: a 35-item self-report test on coping; a 108-item self-report test on fears; and a 15-item self-report test on stress. The results revealed that on specific measures hospitalized adolescents exhibited a statistically significantly less degree of emotional upset during hospitalization than did the community sample. Implications of these results in determining procedures to …
