Constitutional Dialogue And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964, Joel K. Goldstein Jan 2005

Constitutional Dialogue And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964, Joel K. Goldstein

All Faculty Scholarship

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 [1] represented a seminal legislative accomplishment of the twentieth century. Its eleven titles addressed racial discrimination in voting (Title I), public accommodations (Title II), public facilities (Title III), public education (Title IV), publicly financed programs (Title VI) and employment (Title VII).[2] It sought to remedy legislatively the Jim Crow laws and practices that had long contributed to making blacks second-class citizens in America and it provided the Executive Branch tools, especially in Title III and VI, to help implement Brown v. Board of Education.[3] In view of the bill’s focus on racial discrimination, one …

The Molecular Mechanisms Underlying 6-Hydroxydopamine And Ethanol-Induced Neurotoxicity, Gang Chen Jan 2005

The Molecular Mechanisms Underlying 6-Hydroxydopamine And Ethanol-Induced Neurotoxicity, Gang Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ethanol and 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), a Parkinson's disease (PD) mimetic, are two toxins to the cerebellum. This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying their neurotoxicities. The work in chapter 2 of this thesis focused on 6-OHDA-induced neurodegeneration. Previous studies indicate that impaired function of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), commonly referred to as ER stress, is an important factor in the neuropathology of a wide variety of neurological disorders. This study demonstrated that 6-OHDA evoked ER-stress and led to apoptosis in SH-SY5Y neuronal cell line and cultured rat cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs). Furthermore, GSK3beta played a crucial role in mediating 6-OHDA's neurotoxicity. …

Osteotropic Cytokines Mediate Human Osteoblast-Like Cell Eicosanoid Production, Anurag Grover Jan 2005

Osteotropic Cytokines Mediate Human Osteoblast-Like Cell Eicosanoid Production, Anurag Grover

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We have examined the effects of the cytokines tumor necrosis factoralpha (TNF), transforming growth factorbeta (TGFbeta) and the effect of cyclooxygenase inhibitor ibuprofen on prostaglandin and 15-HETE biosynthesis by normal adult human osteoblast-like (hOB) cells. In the present studies, conditioned media harvested from hOB cell cultures were assayed by eicosanoid specific EIAs to determine quantitatively the effects of cytokines on PGE2, 6-keto-PGF1alpha, PGF2alpha, PGD2, thromboxane (TXB2) and on 15-HETE biosynthesis. EIA analysis indicated that PGE2 was the predominant PG metabolite released by unstimulated hOB cells and its synthesis was increased more than other PGs in cells treated with (TGFbeta) and …

Heat Shock Protein 70 As An Indicator Of Toxic Heavy Metal Exposure And Oxidative Stress In The Serum Of Asymptomatic Shipyard Welders, Sung Gu Han Jan 2005

Heat Shock Protein 70 As An Indicator Of Toxic Heavy Metal Exposure And Oxidative Stress In The Serum Of Asymptomatic Shipyard Welders, Sung Gu Han

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) expression has been reported to be a sensitive biomarker of cell stress. Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), vanadium (V), and manganese (Mn) are widely used and exposure to these metals is associated with the development of pulmonary disease. Our data showed that exposure to these metals resulted in a significant increase in cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a human bronchial cell line, BEAS-2B. However, increased Hsp70 expression was observed only in cells exposed to As, Cd, and Hg. To correlate changes associated with Hsp70 overexpression, …

Analysis Of Physiological Partners Of Protein Kinase Ck2 In Drosophila Melanogaster, Umesh C. Karandikar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

CK2 is a highly conserved Ser/Thr protein kinase composed of catalytic (alpha) and regulatory (beta) subunits. The enzyme targets proteins that are involved in a variety of cellular processes such as DNA replication, transcription, translation, cell cycle progression, and development. However, very little information is available on either the regulation of this enzyme or its role during development. These two aspects of CK2 have been addressed using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as a model organism. The first study (chapter 2) addresses the isolation and characterization of SSL, an ortholog of CK2beta. Using combinatorial approaches, we find that SSL associates …

Graph Algorithms For The Haplotyping Problem, Yunkai Liu Jan 2005

Graph Algorithms For The Haplotyping Problem, Yunkai Liu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Evidence from investigations of genetic differences among human beings shows that genetic diseases are often the results of genetic mutations. The most common form of these mutations is single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). A complete map of all SNPs in the human genome will be extremely valuable for studying the relationships between specific haplotypes and specific genetic diseases. Some recent discoveries show that the DNA sequence of human beings can be partitioned into long blocks where genetic recombination has been rare. Then, inferring both haplotypes from chromosome sequences is a biologically meaningful research topic, which has compounded mathematical and computational problems.;We …

Mass Spectrometry Of Metallothionein Adducts As Candidate Biomarkers Of Styrene Oxide And 1-Phenylpropylene Oxide, Sandra G. Tarr Jan 2005

Mass Spectrometry Of Metallothionein Adducts As Candidate Biomarkers Of Styrene Oxide And 1-Phenylpropylene Oxide, Sandra G. Tarr

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Metallothioneins (MT) are cysteine-rich intracellular proteins that sequester epoxides, such as the genotoxic styrene metabolite, styrene oxide (SO). Covalent adduct formation by the ring-opening of SO and its homologue, 1-phenylpropylene oxide (trans), with MT forms stable complexes that potentially may serve as biomarkers for epoxide exposure. MT was reacted with SO and trans-phenylpropylene oxide (PPO) separately in water. Mass spectra of adducts were obtained using electrospray ionization with positive-ion detection in an ion trap mass spectrometer. MS/MS analysis established the covalent nature of the complexation. Further experiments were conducted to determine the site of adduct formation. Molecular modeling was used …

Functional Analysis Of Atrpd3b, A Rpd3-Type Histone Deacetylase, In Arabidopsis, Lin Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Histone acetylation is modulated through the action of histone acetyltransferases and deacetylases, which play key roles in the regulation of eukaryotic gene expression. The RPD3 group of histone deacetylases constitutes the first class of histone deacetylases (HDACs) in eukaryotes.;In yeast and mammalian cells, it was found that RPD3 histone deacetylases are involved in the ageing and development. In contrast much less is known about the function of RPD3s in plant. Here I studied AtRPD3B, a RPD3-type histone deacetylase in Arabidopsis thaliana, to define its role in plant development and signal transduction pathways. Using the AtRPD3B: GUS transgenic Arabidopsis plants, I …

A Preliminary Survey Of Testudo Graeca Linnaeus 1758 Specimens From Central Anatolia, Turkey, Oğuz Türkozan, Kurtuluş Olgun, John Wilkinson, Leigh Gillett, John Spence

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Sixteen specimens of Testudo graeca Linnaeus 1758 from 2 adjacent localities (Meke and Acıgöl) in Central Anatolia were measured. Morphological characters standardised for straight carapace length (SCL) were compared with original raw values from Testudo populations from Aegean and south-eastern Turkey. The post-ANOVA pairwise analysis (Tukey's) across all groups verified sexual dimorphism in the Central Anatolian populations in terms of anal suture length (P < 0.05) and plastron width 2 (P < 0.05). Discriminant analysis based on standardised values provided 89.3% and 92.6% correct classification among males and females, respectively. The difference was clearer between the Aegean and Central Anatolian populations, with a more domed carapace (CH) in the males and shorter plastron length (PL) and plastron width 2 (PW2) in the females of the Aegean population in comparison with the Central Anatolian population.

"You Must All Be Interned": Identity Among Internees In Great Britain During World War Ii, Elizabeth A. Atkins

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

Between 1933 and 1940, the United States, Great Britain and most other developed nations saw an influx of German refugees entering their borders attempting to be free of the tyranny of Hitler’s National Socialism. Many of those fleeing from Germany were intellectuals: authors, teachers, artists, or thinkers who faced persecution in their homeland. For the men, women, and children who chose the British Isles as their new home, Great Britain symbolized hope for a life free from persecution. By 1941, however, many refugees from Germany found themselves arrested and put into camps, not by the Nazis, but by their protectors, …
