Pomp In Circumstance: Paradox, Oppositions, Metaphors And Philosophy In The Context Of Adult Basic Education, Matt Puma Dec 2004

Pomp In Circumstance: Paradox, Oppositions, Metaphors And Philosophy In The Context Of Adult Basic Education, Matt Puma

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

The ability to think fluidly with a variety of oppositional forms is essential to both critical and creative thinking. Loaded oppositions such as science vs. humanities, reason vs. emotion, male vs. female and good vs. evil become hindrances to thought when they are held too rigidly as dichotomies. Learning to work with the rich flow of oppositions involves patient exploration and an openness to the emergence of paradoxical truths rooted in the opposition. However, paradoxical thinking is not the only method for flexing fixed oppositions; there are many other types of "moves" that one can make when thinking creatively with …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a slowly evolving articular disease that appears to originate in the cartilage and affects the underlying bone, soft tissues, and synovial fluid. This condition usually occurs late in life, principally affecting the large weight-bearing joints such as the knee. It is particularly disabling when the knees are affected, because it limits the ability to walk, to rise from a chair, and to use stairs. The treatment selections for OA knees include analgesic drugs, physiotherapy, intra-articular (IA) drug administration, and surgical total knee replacement. We chose IA hyaluronic acid injection as the treatment method as it was documented as …

The Alignment Of Organizational Incentives With Organizational Goals Across It Adoption Stages, Linda Leon, Dolphy Abraham, Robbie Nakatsu, Zbigniew Prasznyski, Kala Seal

Information Systems and Business Analytics Faculty Works

This paper presents a framework to plan organizational incentives for aligning usage behavior with organizational objectives across various IT adoption stages. Our framework is motivated by the introduction of incentive alignment as another dimension in Information Systems design (Ba et al., 2001) and is based on technology diffusion models presented in the literature. We focus in particular on the usage of technology that is discretionary in nature. In addition, the user group is limited to internal users of the technology at the operational level. The framework integrates key issues on motivation and incentives in order to understand how organizations can …

Evaluasi Konseptual Atas Psak No. 26 Serta Dampaknya Terhadap Sektor Properti, Aruna Wirjolukito

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

Implementation of capitalization treatment of borrowing costs is often questioned related to the effective of accounting information presentation. So far, PSAK Indonesia had already adapted these issues taken from SFAS. About two half years later, PSAK No. 26 had been revised at mid term of January 1997, by adding some important stressing about qualifying assets. One thing to be considered in accounting treatment implementation is the false impact in the process of decision making, e.g. in [1] investment decision and [2] bias effect related to the qualitative characteristics elements like relevance and reliability. Also, capitalization tends to leave conservatism principle …

This research is conducted by using major accounting ratios in order to identify the characteristics of liquidated and restructured banks, of which are listed in Jakarta Stock Exchange. The growth of bank industry was highly related with Paket Oktober 1988. This condition is marked by increasing number of banks, from 40 companies in 1988 to 240 companies in 1994. This research is conducted based on a three period financial information, commencing 1994 to 1996. Proven hypothesis concludes that the number of restructured banks is …

Penggunaan Distribusi Laba Dalam Mendeteksi Manajemen Laba, Yulianti Yulianti Dec 2004

Penggunaan Distribusi Laba Dalam Mendeteksi Manajemen Laba, Yulianti Yulianti

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

Discontinuities in earnings distribution have been discovered by several studies in United States and Australia. These studies examined the pooled, cross sectional distribution of earnings and found discontinuities around earnings threshold which indicates the exercise of management discretion to exceed earnings threshold. This study examines the distribution of earnings in Indonesia for two important purposes which are avoiding losses and avoiding earnings decline. The result on listed companies at the JSX during 1999 - 2002 show abnormality in earnings distribution, whereas total small profit firms are above expectations, meanwhile total small loss firms are the opposite. We didn’t find such …

Hubungan Antara Konservatisme Akuntansi Dengan Konflik Bondholders-Shareholders Seputar Kebijakan Dividen Dan Peringkat Obligasi, Dahlia Sari Dec 2004

Hubungan Antara Konservatisme Akuntansi Dengan Konflik Bondholders-Shareholders Seputar Kebijakan Dividen Dan Peringkat Obligasi, Dahlia Sari

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

This study provides evidence on the role of accounting conservatism in debt contracting. I hypothesize that (i) there is positive association between conflicts of bondholders-shareholders over dividend policy and the use of conservative accounting (ii) there is positive association between bond ratings and the use of conservative accounting. Conflicts of bondholders-shareholders arise because of default risk in that the firm cannot pay at maturity because of having not enough net assets and this unavailability of enough net assets is caused by dividend overpayment to shareholders. The alternative solution to prevent dividend overpayment is to consistently use the conservative accounting. The …

Aplikasi Formula Penilaian Opsi Black-Scholes Untuk Estimasi Nilai Call Opsi Indeks Saham Lq-45 Di Bursa Efek Jakarta, Agung Baruno, Roy H. M. Sembel

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

The objective of this research is to investigate the applicability of the Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model (BSOPM) on options on market index at the Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX). A simulation is conducted using actual JSX LQ-45 index data between January 1997 and April 1999. Each month, a simulated premium of a one-month call option is calculated based on BSOPM and then compared with its payoff at its maturity date. The results show that the average profit of the simulated long stock index call option is negative but not statistically significant. It means that the BSOPM, although not rejectabie statistically, cannot …

Hydrographic Aspect Of Chole Bay, Mafia Island, Alfonse Dubi Dec 2004

Hydrographic Aspect Of Chole Bay, Mafia Island, Alfonse Dubi

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Mafia has been a port on the monsoon trade routes from the Arabia to Sofala for almost 2000 years. The Island has not changed significantly since ancient times and retains a traditional culture of fishing and subsistence agriculture. By 1991, development of tourism on the Island seemed very slow. Factors limiting the number of visitors include lack of adequate travel connections between the island and the mainland, and inadequate and poor hotel services. Currently, accessibility to Mafia Island has improved. Mafia Island can now be reached by air in addition to the traditional sea travel. However, the Island does not …

Participatory Evaluation And Improvement Of Cassava Processing Machines For The Eastern Zone Of Tanzania, V Silayo

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Cassava processing machines previously introduced in Tanzania were chippers and graters of the International Institute Of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) design. Popularization of such machmes in Tanzania required thorough participatory testing with stakeholders. When tested with farmers in Muheza and Kibaha districts average throughputs were 11-18 kg/h, 752 kg/h and 270 kg/hfor the manual chipper, engine-powered chipper and the engine-powered grater, respectively. Despite their low throughputs the manual chipper and the grater were Veo difficult to operate, and therefore demanded improvement. Improvement on these machines included modifications on the design for increased throughput, ease of operation and safety. The improved machines …

The Effects Of Education Level On Physical Fitness Among Middle-Aged Adults In Taiwan, Shih-Wei Chou, Yin-Chou Lin, Chi-Te Li, Alice M. K. Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Health-related physical fitness can be assessed with four main attributes: body composition, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance. Regular exercise is thought to improve physical fitness, and objective physical fitness assessment and appropriate exercise prescriptions may help unfit individuals to become fit. Assessment of physical fitness among the general population can aid the understanding of general levels of physical fitness in the community, promote healthy habits, and reduce the burden of chronic illness caused by physical inactivity. A total of 13,187 healthy adult Taiwanese citizens between 40 and 65 years of age were enrolled in this study between …

Effect Of Temperature On Type Of Cerebrovascular Accident, Sen-Yung Liu, Ta-Sen Wei, Cheng-Hsiung Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Monthly or seasonal change of climate has been suggested to associate with the incidence and type of stroke, but this association is not conclusive owing to variation in study design and geographic area. The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effect of temperature variation on type of cerebrovascular accident in first-time stroke patients. There were 1008 in-patients enrolled in this study, including 718 ischemic (infarct) stroke and 290 hemorrhagic stroke patients. The age was 68.9±11.0 years in the infarct and 62.9±13.6 years in the hemorrhagic group; 62%(181 cases) of the infarct group and 55%(395 cases) of the hemorrhagic …

Differential Impairment And Recovery Of Two Languages In A Bilingual Aphasic Patient: A Casereport, I-Ru Chen, Su-Fen Liao, Ta-Sen Wei Dec 2004

Differential Impairment And Recovery Of Two Languages In A Bilingual Aphasic Patient: A Casereport, I-Ru Chen, Su-Fen Liao, Ta-Sen Wei

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

According to the definition proposed by Grosjean, more than half of the world population is multilingual. Bilingual aphasia is more complex and variable; thus it may need a more individualized rehabilitation program than monolingual aphasia. However, many instances of bilingual aphasia may have been misdiagnosed and treated as monolingual aphasia due to a lack of comprehensive assessment. We present here a change in the language pattern of a bilingual Chinese woman, who initially spoke Cantonese (mother language) and Mandarin (2nd language) very well. She was afflicted by aphasia due to a stroke involving cortical and subcortical lesions in 1999. After rehabilitation …

Relationships Between Clinical Symptoms And Electrodiagnosis In Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Pei-Ying Chao, Hui-Lin Lin, Shin-Liang Pan, Chein-Wei Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common peripheral entrapment neuropathies. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome experience numbness, pain, and/or weakness in the hands over the median nerve distribution area. In current practice, diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome is based on subjective symptoms and objective findings from physical examinations and electrodiagnosis. We examined 40 hands with carpal tunnel syndrome in 24 patients and evaluated the relation between symptom severity and electrodiagnosis. Subjective hand symptoms were obtained by self-administered questionnaire and were categorized as numbness, pain, or motor function according to factor analysis methods. Numbness symptoms were significantly related to …
