Stabilizing Moduli With String Cosmology, Scott Watson Oct 2004

Stabilizing Moduli With String Cosmology, Scott Watson

Physics - All Scholarship

In this talk I will discuss the role of finite temperature quantum corrections in string cosmology and show that they can lead to a stabilization mechanism for the volume moduli. I will show that from the higher dimensional perspective this results from the effect of states of enhanced symmetry on the one-loop free energy. These states lead not only to stabilization, but also suggest an alternative model for cold dark matter. At late times, when the low energy effective field theory gives the appropriate description of the dynamics, the moduli will begin to slow-roll and stabilization will generically fail. However, …

A Case Study Of Teaching A Quantitative Course Using Archived Streaming Video, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

This case study highlights some of the issues and difficulties experienced in teaching a quantitative course using three methods of delivery: in-class to an audience of students, television broadcast over a satellite system to distance students, and archived streaming video accessible by students. The discussion is applicable to administrators and faculty exploring the option of teaching a course using multiple delivery approaches.

The Superior Aspects Of An Arc Downcomer Tray With Total Deflectors, Zhibing Zhang, Weiming Meng, Zhen Zhou, Yinchun Liang Oct 2004

The Superior Aspects Of An Arc Downcomer Tray With Total Deflectors, Zhibing Zhang, Weiming Meng, Zhen Zhou, Yinchun Liang

Separations Technology VI: New Perspectives on Very Large-Scale Operations

A new structural tray ¾ the arc downcomer tray with total deflectors (ADTTD) was designed based on the numerical calculation of entropy generation rate. A pilot-scale setup was established to evaluate its hydrodynamics, heat transfer and mass transfer performances. The correlations for calculating the tray pressure drop and downcomer backup were derived. The measured temperature profiles of the liquid layer on the tray show that the flow pattern is nearly in an ideal mode if suitable deflectors are designed. The pressure drop of this tray decreases by approximately 50% compared with that of a conventional sieve tray in the region …

Adsorption Of Metals From Metal-Organic Complexes Derived From Bioleaching Of Nickel Laterite Ores, Anat Deepatana, Marjorie Valix

Separations Technology VI: New Perspectives on Very Large-Scale Operations

This study aims to establish the potential of an iminodiacetic-based chelating resin (Purolite S930) in recovering Ni and Co from the biological leachate. The adsorption tests were carried out to compare the hydrogen (H) and sodium (Na) forms of resin. The equilibrium adsorption isotherms were determined using metal citrate complexes with concentrations from 15 to 2000 mg/L. Adsorption tests were carried out for a period of 24 hours to attain adsorption equilibrium. The pH of the solution was varied using citric acid with concentrations of 0.01-1.0 M. The adsorption equilibrium data were interpreted using the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Metal …

Coagu-Flocculation Mechanism Of Flocculant And Its Physical Model, Zhan Hanhui, Zhang Xiaoqi, Zhan Xuehui Oct 2004

Coagu-Flocculation Mechanism Of Flocculant And Its Physical Model, Zhan Hanhui, Zhang Xiaoqi, Zhan Xuehui

Separations Technology VI: New Perspectives on Very Large-Scale Operations

On the basis of summarizing and analyzing the theory of coagu-flocculation and its practical application, this paper proposes a physical model for coagu-flocculation. The model defines the process of coagu-flocculation as three steps: mixing, coagulation and flocculation, though there is no strict distinction in the practical processes themselves. Through experiment, two facts are verified: (1) with organic flocculants mixing and flocculation occur substantially in the same step, and need strong mixing intensity; while with inorganic flocculants much weaker mixing intensity is needed; (2) so as to ensure big floccules are formed, weaker mixing for a certain period of time is …

Leaching Of Low- Grade Nickel Ores By Fungi Metabolic Acids, Jessica Tang, Marjorie Valix Oct 2004

Leaching Of Low- Grade Nickel Ores By Fungi Metabolic Acids, Jessica Tang, Marjorie Valix

Separations Technology VI: New Perspectives on Very Large-Scale Operations

This study was designed to investigate the nature of nickel and cobalt dissolution from limonite and weathered saprolite ores. Chemical leaching was conducted using 1 to 3M of citric, lactic and malic acids. These tests aimed to mimic metal dissolution achieved using heterotrophic or fungi organism and their corresponding metabolic products. The results in this study was able to demonstrate the effect of secondary reaction or adsorption, pulp density and the potential hampering effect of acid neutralizing minerals and acid activity or strength on metal dissolution. Nickel and cobalt dissolution were also found to be dependent on the nature of …

Economic Evaluation Of Membrane Systems For Large Scale Capture And Storage Of Co2 Mixtures, Minh T. Ho, Dianne E. Wiley Oct 2004

Economic Evaluation Of Membrane Systems For Large Scale Capture And Storage Of Co2 Mixtures, Minh T. Ho, Dianne E. Wiley

Separations Technology VI: New Perspectives on Very Large-Scale Operations

The capture and storage of CO2 (CCS) as a greenhouse mitigation option is becoming an increasingly important priority for Australian industry. Membrane based CO2 removal systems can provide a cost effective, low maintenance approach for removing CO2 from gas streams. This study examines the effect of membrane characteristics and operating parameters on CCS costs using economic models developed by UNSW for any source-sink combination. The total sequestration cost per tonne of CO2 avoided for separation, transport and storage are compared for the separation of CO2 from coal fired power plants and natural gas processing. A cost benefit analysis indicates that …

Hydrothermal Stability Analysis Of Carbonised Template Molecular Sieve Silica Membranes, M. C. Duke, J. C. Diniz Da Costa, G. Q. (Max) Lu, C. Malde, P. G. Gray Oct 2004

Hydrothermal Stability Analysis Of Carbonised Template Molecular Sieve Silica Membranes, M. C. Duke, J. C. Diniz Da Costa, G. Q. (Max) Lu, C. Malde, P. G. Gray

Separations Technology VI: New Perspectives on Very Large-Scale Operations

For fuel cell CO clean up application, the presence of water with silica membranes greatly reduces their selectivity to CO. We show results of a new functional carbonised template membrane of around 13nm thickness which offered hydrothermal stability with no compromise to the membrane’s H2/CO permselectivity of 16. Lost permeance was also regenerated.

A Dialect Study Of Oregon Norms, Lisa Wittenberg Hillyard Oct 2004

A Dialect Study Of Oregon Norms, Lisa Wittenberg Hillyard

Dissertations and Theses

The pioneers and settlers of the Oregon Territory were not of one ilk. They came from various places and brought their separate speech patterns with them. This study sought to identify which major North American English dialect was present in the first half of the 20th century in Oregon. Analysis relied on the descriptions for the Southern, Northern, Midlands, and Western dialects. Some dialect features have acoustic measurements attached to their descriptions, and others do not. The analytical process was based on acoustic measurements for vowel classes and individual tokens, as well as global observations about the place of …

Lawmaking By Public Welfare Professionals, Margaret F. Brinig Oct 2004

Lawmaking By Public Welfare Professionals, Margaret F. Brinig

ExpressO

In an era of shrinking state and local resources for domestic violence prevention and detection, governments face a critical question of how to best allocate scarce funds. This paper suggests some answers for treating violence by caregivers and presents a model for evaluating other programs. To reach our conclusions, we analyzed data and survey results supplied by more than 1700 county-level adult protective services (APS) authorities.

We found that some expensive programs produce very few results in terms of reporting, investigating, and substantiating elder abuse. For example, requiring a specific education or experience level (and therefore guaranteeing higher salaries) or …
