A Comparison Of Kinetic Family Drawings Of Firstborn And Second-Born Siblings, Lynn Anderson Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Kinetic Family Drawings Of Firstborn And Second-Born Siblings, Lynn Anderson

Dissertations

Problem. While the Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) is a popular assessment tool for clinicians, research on developmental issues and how siblings draw their families is lacking. The purpose of this study was to (a) describe the way siblings perceive themselves and their family interpersonal relationships as expressed in the KFD; and (b) to describe possible developmental age differences in the KFD.

Method. The KFD and a Family Dynamics Interview Schedule were administered to 50 pairs of first- and second-born children from Southwestern Michigan, ages 5-14. The data were analyzed quantitatively by the Wilcoxon Sign Test and Chi-Square, using …

Stroke In Devon: Knowledge Was Good, But Action Was Poor., C. Carroll, J. Hobart, C. Fox, L. Teare, J. Gibson Jan 2004

Stroke In Devon: Knowledge Was Good, But Action Was Poor., C. Carroll, J. Hobart, C. Fox, L. Teare, J. Gibson

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Effective implementation of early treatment strategies for stroke requires prompt admission to hospital. There are several reasons for delayed admission. Good awareness should facilitate early admission. We identified local targets for education. METHODS: Four groups, each of 40 people, completed questionnaires to determine their knowledge of stroke symptoms and risk factors, and the action they took or would take in the event of a stroke. The groups were: patients with a diagnosis of stroke or TIA (within 48 hrs of admission); patients at risk of stroke; the general population; and nurses. RESULTS: Forty per cent of stroke …

A Randomised Controlled Trial And Cost Effectiveness Study Of Systematic Screening (Targeted And Total Population Screening) Versus Routine Practice For The Detection Of Atrial Fibrillation In The Over 65s: (Safe) [Isrctn19633732], Dawn Swancutt, Richard Hobbs, David Fitzmaurice, Jonathan Mant, Ellen Murray, Sue Jowett, James Raftery, Stirling Bryan, Michael Davies, Gregory Lip Jan 2004

Peninsula Medical School

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been recognised as an important independent risk factor for thromboembolic disease, particularly stroke for which it provides a five-fold increase in risk. This study aimed to determine the baseline prevalence and the incidence of AF based on a variety of screening strategies and in doing so to evaluate the incremental cost-effectiveness of different screening strategies, including targeted or whole population screening, compared with routine clinical practice, for detection of AF in people aged 65 and over. The value of clinical assessment and echocardiography as additional methods of risk stratification for thromboembolic disease in patients with …

On-Road Motor Vehicle Emissions From Around The World, Donald H. Stedman, Gary A. Bishop Jan 2004

On-Road Motor Vehicle Emissions From Around The World, Donald H. Stedman, Gary A. Bishop

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

In 1993, on-road emissions in Continental Europe showed a pronounced South/North declining gradient for CO, HC and NO fuel specific emissions (gm/kg). Emissions in Hamburg and Rotterdam were comparable to emissions measured in 1993 in the U.S.A. with the same on-road instrument. Contrasts between emissions in the USA, the UK and Sweden demonstrated the importance both of modern catalysts and of good maintenance. The same contrast in 1998 shows the same picture but lower emissions at all three locations. In the decade from 1993-2003, U.S. emissions have declined markedly, apparently mainly as a result of lower emitting, better maintained, new …

A Neuroeconomics Approach To Inferring Utility Functions In Sensorimotor Control, Konrad P. Körding, Izumi Fukunaga, Ian S. Howard, James N. Ingram, Daniel M. Wolpert Jan 2004

A Neuroeconomics Approach To Inferring Utility Functions In Sensorimotor Control, Konrad P. Körding, Izumi Fukunaga, Ian S. Howard, James N. Ingram, Daniel M. Wolpert

Making choices is a fundamental aspect of human life. For over a century experimental economists have characterized the decisions people make based on the concept of a utility function. This function increases with increasing desirability of the outcome, and people are assumed to make decisions so as to maximize utility. When utility depends on several variables, indifference curves arise that represent outcomes with identical utility that are therefore equally desirable. Whereas in economics utility is studied in terms of goods and services, the sensorimotor system may also have utility functions defining the desirability of various outcomes. Here, we investigate the …

Management Of Marine Wildlife Disturbance, C. Kelly, G. A. Glegg, C. D. Speedie Jan 2004

Management Of Marine Wildlife Disturbance, C. Kelly, G. A. Glegg, C. D. Speedie

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In recent years, concerns have been raised about the health and status of a range of marine species in UK waters, including the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus). Disturbance and harassment from increasing inshore leisure traffic and a fascinated public have been identified as potential threats to these large marine species. This concern is coupled with a legislative framework that is perceived to be less effective in protecting key species than it could be, and difficult to enforce. This study examined the extent of anthropogenic disturbance to a range of marine wildlife in inshore waters around …
