Implications Of Locus Specific Microevolution Inferred By Genetic Distances Between Two Local Populations Of Drosophila Melanogaster From Turkey, Ergi̇ Deni̇z Özsoy Jan 2004

Implications Of Locus Specific Microevolution Inferred By Genetic Distances Between Two Local Populations Of Drosophila Melanogaster From Turkey, Ergi̇ Deni̇z Özsoy

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The standard genetic distances were calculated with 3 allozyme loci in 2 local populations of Drosophila melanogaster from Turkey. One of the distances, i.e. obtained with alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh), was completely different from the distances with the other 2 allozyme loci, glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (\alphaGpdh) and cytosolic malate dehydrogenase (Mdh1), leading to a statistically significant inflation in the cumulated distance value obtained over the 3 loci. It is shown that this final significant value was caused by the significant difference in allelic frequencies at the Adh loci across local populations. Implications of the different genetic distances in 2 local populations are …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Morphological, biometrical, karyological, bacular and phallic aspects of Apodemus mystacinus populations in Turkey were studied based on 117 specimens. The biometrical and phallic comparisons confirmed the distinctness of A. m. mystacinus and A. m. epimelas. The UPGMA tree divided populations in Turkey into 2 groups. The distance (D) between A. m. mystacinus and A. m. euxinus was 0.469. A. mystacinus had karyotypic values of 2n = 48, NFa = 50, and NF = 52. Being different from A. m. epimelas, there was a short groove in the dorsal view of the phallus in populations of A. m. mystacinus in Turkey.

Constructive Lower Bounds On Classical Multicolor Ramsey Numbers, Xiaodong Xu, Xie Zheng, Geoffrey Exoo, Stanislaw Radziszowski Jan 2004

Constructive Lower Bounds On Classical Multicolor Ramsey Numbers, Xiaodong Xu, Xie Zheng, Geoffrey Exoo, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

This paper studies lower bounds for classical multicolor Ramsey numbers, first by giving a short overview of past results, and then by presenting several general constructions establishing new lower bounds for many diagonal and off-diagonal multicolor Ramsey numbers. In particular, we improve several lower bounds for R_k(4) and R_k(5) for some small k, including 415 < = R_3(5), 634 < = R_4(4), 2721 < = R_4(5), 3416 < = R_5(4) and 26082 < = R_5(5). Most of the new lower bounds are consequences of general constructions.

An Upper Bound Of 62 On The Classical Ramsey Number(3,3,3,3), Susan Fettes, Richard Kramer, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

We show that the classical Ramsey number R(3,3,3,3) is no greater than 62. That is, any edge coloring with four colors of a complete graph on 62 vertices must contain a monochromatic triangle. Basic notions and a historical overview are given along with the theoretical framework underlying the main result. The algorithms for the computational verification of the result are presented along with a brief discussion of the software tools that were utilized.

Gas Plume Species Identification By Regression Analyses, David Pogorzala, David W. Messinger, Carl Salvaggio, John R. Schott

Articles

Identification of constituent gases in effluent plumes is performed using linear least-squares regression techniques. Overhead thermal hyperspectral imagery is used for this study. Synthetic imagery is employed as the test-case for algorithm development. Synthetic images are generated by the Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) Model. The use of synthetic data provides a direct measure of the success of the algorithm through the comparison with truth map outputs. In image test-cases, plumes emanating from factory stacks will have been identified using a separate detection algorithm. The gas identification algorithm being developed in this work will then be used …

Methods Of Spectral Reflectance Reconstruction For A Sinarback 54 Digital Camera, Yonghui Zhao, Lawrence Taplin, Mahdi Nezamabadi

Articles

There is an urgent need to build digital image databases with adequate colorimetric accuracy for museums, achieves and libraries. Traditional colorimetric imaging suffers from the possibilities of metameric problem, while spectral imaging can facilitate accurate tristimulus estimation and possibilities for spectral reconstruction of each pixel. Spectral image archives can be used to render accurate images both spectrally and colorimetrically to the original target for any illuminant and observer. The most convenient and practical capture system for spectral imaging combines a commercial trichromatic camera with two absorption filters to define image spectrally. Two images were taken for each target; so six-channel …

Modifications Of A Sinarback 54 Digital Camera For Spectral And High-Accuracy Colorimetric Imaging: Simulations And Experiments, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin, Mahdi Nezamabadi

Articles

A search technique was used to identify sets of colored glass filters that could be placed in the optical path of the Sinarback 54 camera system resulting in improved color accuracy compared with a production unit and the ability to perform spectral estimation. A green and blue filter, each a pair of filters, were identified and constructed from Schott glass. RGB images were collected through these two filters resulting in six image planes. Using the Gretag Macbeth ColorChecker DC and a custom target of blue artist pigments, a transformation was derived that converted digitally flat-fielded and photometrically-linearized camera signals to …

Three-Terminal Si-Based Negative Differential Resistance Circuit Element With Adjustable Peak-To-Valley Current Ratios Using A Monolithic Vertical Integration, Sung-Yong Chung, Niu Jin, Paul Berger, Ronghua Yu, Phillip E. Thompson, Roger Lake, Sean L. Rommel, Santosh K. Kurinec

Articles

Si-based resonant bipolar transistors are demonstrated by the monolithic vertical integration of Si-based resonant interband tunnel diodes atop the emitter of Si/SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistors ~HBTs! on a silicon substrate. In the common emitter configuration, IC versus VCE shows negative differential resistance characteristics. The resulting characteristics are adjustable peak-to-valley current ratios, including infinite and negative values, and tailorable peak current densities by the control of the HBT base current under room temperature operation. With the integrated RITD-HBT combination, latching properties which are the key operating principle for high-speed mixed-signal, memory, and logic circuitry, are experimentally demonstrated.

We present surface photometry for the central regions of a sample of 48 spiral galaxies (mostly unbarred and barred of types Sbc or Sc) observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Surface brightness profiles were derived and modeled with a Nuker law. We also analyzed archival Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images with a larger field of view, available for 18 galaxies in our sample. We modeled the extracted bulge surface brightness profiles with an exponential, an r1/4, or an rn profile. In agreement with previous studies, we find that bulges of Sbc galaxies …

Desirable Properties Of An Unconventional Population Control Policy, Amitrajeet Batabyal

Articles

A great deal of concern has now been expressed about the authoritarian population control policies adopted by Asian countries such as Vietnam, India, and particularly China. Many of these autocratic policies and certainly the Chinese "one child policy" have failed in part because the framers of these policies have attempted to unsuccessfully circumvent a long standing cultural desire for male children. Therefore, in this note, we first propose an unconventional population control policy that is sensitive to this cultural desire for male progeny. Next, we show that this policy is desirable because (i)it is likely to ameliorate the "missing girls" …

On The Links Between Managerial Actions, Keystone Species, And The Resilience Of Ecological-Economic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Articles

Managerial actions influence the survival probabilities of the keystone species of an ecological-economic system. In turn, the well-being of these keystone species translates into the well being or the resilience of the underlying ecological-economic system. What are the theoretical links between managerial actions, keystone species, and the resilience of ecological-economic systems? Recently, Batabyal (2002) has addressed aspects of this question. In this paper, we extend the analysis in Batabyal (2002). First, we use a stochastic model to delineate a stylized ecological-economic system. Next, we discuss the links between managerial actions, keystone species, and this ecological-economic system’s resilience. Finally, we show …
