Accuracy Of Airborne Lidar-Derived Elevation: Empirical Assessment And Error Budget, Michael E. Hodgson, Patrick Bresnahan Jan 2004

Accuracy Of Airborne Lidar-Derived Elevation: Empirical Assessment And Error Budget, Michael E. Hodgson, Patrick Bresnahan

Faculty Publications

As part of a countywide large-scale mapping effort for Richland County, South Carolina, an accuracy assessment of a recently acquired lidar-derived data set was conducted. Airborne lidar (2-m nominal posting) was collected at a flying height of 1207 meters above ground level (AGL) using an Optech ALTM (Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper) 1210 system. Unique to this study are the reference point elevations. Rather than using an interpolation approach for gathering observed elevations at reference points, the x-y coordinates of lidar points were located in the field and these elevations were surveyed. Using both total-station-based and rapid-static GPS techniques, observed vertical …

A Parameterization Model For Transportation Feature Extraction, Michael E. Hodgson, Xingong Li, Yang Cheng Jan 2004

A Parameterization Model For Transportation Feature Extraction, Michael E. Hodgson, Xingong Li, Yang Cheng

Faculty Publications

This article presents one solution to the parameterization problem for automated road feature extraction models. Using a line-length buffer approach, a measure of agreement between extracted road features and reference road features is defined. An automated approach for deriving this agreement index is presented and implemented as a parameterization model. Coupling the implemented parameterization model with an existing transportation feature extraction model is demonstrated. Although the solution was designed for a road feature extraction model (FEM), the conceptual design could be applied to other linear FEMs, such as models for streams, fault lines, and isolines.

Postscript: Another Look At Patane And Seibert, The 2004 Miranda 'Poisoned Fruit' Cases, Yale Kamisar

Articles

Some months after I finished writing an article that, inter alia, discussed the lower court opinions in Patane and Seibert (an article that appears elsewhere in this issue of the Journa),1 the Supreme Court handed down its decisions in those cases.2 In Patane, a 5-4 majority held admissible a Glock pistol located as a result of a failure to comply with Miranda. In Seibert, a 5-4 majority agreed with the state court that a "second confession," one obtained after the police had deliberately used a two-stage interrogation technique designed to undermine the Miranda warnings, was inadmissible. 3 In Patane, Justice …

Automated Synthesis Of Virtualblocks For Interfacing System Under Test, Andrew Hai Liang She Jan 2004

Automated Synthesis Of Virtualblocks For Interfacing System Under Test, Andrew Hai Liang She

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

In this thesis, I/O signal recognizers, called VIRTUALBLOCKS, are synthesized to interface with a SYSTEM UNDER TEST (SUT). Methods for automated synthesis of virtualblocks allow us to simulate environment interfaces with SUT and also perform fault detection on SUT. Such methods must be able to recognize incoming sequences of signals from SUT, and upon the signal recognition determine the proper outgoing sequences of signals to SUT. We characterize our systems into four distinctive systems: system under test, AUXILIARY SYSTEM, controller and external environment. The auxiliary system is represented as a form of condition system Petri net (virtualblocks) and interacts with …

Dsp Implementation Of A Digital Non-Linear Interval Control Algorithm For A Quasi-Keyhole Plasma Arc Welding Process, Matthew Wayne Everett Jan 2004

Dsp Implementation Of A Digital Non-Linear Interval Control Algorithm For A Quasi-Keyhole Plasma Arc Welding Process, Matthew Wayne Everett

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The Quasi-Keyhole plasma arc welding (PAW) process is a relatively simple concept, which provides a basis for controlling the weld quality of a subject work piece by cycling the arc current between a static base and variable peak level. Since the weld quality is directly related to the degree of penetration and amount of heat that is generated and maintained in the system, the Non-Linear Interval Control Algorithm provides a methodology for maintaining these parameters within acceptable limits by controlling the arc current based upon measured peak current times. The Texas Instruments TMS320VC5416 DSK working in conjunction with Signalwares AED-109 …

Fpga Based Implementation Of A Position Estimator For Controlling A Switched Reluctance Motor, Srilaxmi Pampana Jan 2004

Fpga Based Implementation Of A Position Estimator For Controlling A Switched Reluctance Motor, Srilaxmi Pampana

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Rotor Position information is essential in the operation of the Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) for properly controlling its phase currents. This thesis uses Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology to implement a method to estimate the SRMs rotor position using the inverse inductance value of the SRMs phases. The estimated rotor position is given as input to the Commutator circuit, also implemented in the FPGA, to determine when torque-producing currents should be input in the SRM phase windings. The Estimator and Commutator design is coded using Verilog HDL and is simulated using Xilinx tools. This circuit is implemented on a …

Control Synthesis In Colored Condition Systems, Praveen Mandavilli Jan 2004

Control Synthesis In Colored Condition Systems, Praveen Mandavilli

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

With complex systems, monolithic models become impractical and it becomes necessary to model them through subsystems and components. Unless these components and subsystems are structured, exploiting them in a methodical manner to develop a control logic for them also becomes complex. In the previous research, to characterize the input/output behavior of discrete state interacting, systems a condition language framework was defined and algorithms that can automatically generate a controller given the system model and the desired specification using this framework were presented. Though this framework and the control algorithms are ideally suited to simple systems, representation of components with large …

Robust Generic Model Control For Parameter Interval Systems, Joseph Michael Istre Jan 2004

Robust Generic Model Control For Parameter Interval Systems, Joseph Michael Istre

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A multivariable control technique is proposed for a type of nonlinear system with parameter intervals. The control is based upon the feedback linearization scheme called Generic Model Control, and alters the control calculation by utilizing parameter intervals, employing an adaptive step, averaging control predictions, and applying an interval problem solution. The proposed approach is applied in controlling both a linear and a nonlinear arc welding system as well in other simulations of scalar and multivariable systems.

Economic Analysis Of Cellulase Production By Clostridium Thermocellum In Solid State And Submerged Fermentation, Jun Zhuang Jan 2004

Economic Analysis Of Cellulase Production By Clostridium Thermocellum In Solid State And Submerged Fermentation, Jun Zhuang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Dependence on foreign oil remains a serious issue for the U.S. economy. Additionally, automobile emissions related to petroleum-based, fossil fuel has been cited as one source of environmental problems, such as global warming and reduced air quality. Using agricultural and forest biomass as a source for the biofuel ethanol industry, provides a partial solution by displacing some fossil fuels. However, the use of high cost enzymes as an input is a significant limitation for ethanol production.Economic analyses of cellulase enzyme production costs using solid state cultivation (SSC) are performed and compared to the traditional submerged fermentation (SmF) method. Results from …

Organizational Economics And The Food Processing Industry, Benjamin M. Tirrell Jan 2004

Organizational Economics And The Food Processing Industry, Benjamin M. Tirrell

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The food processing industry is dominated by large corporations. These firms play a critical role in forming the derived demand faced by agricultural producers, but little is understood about how these companies make strategic choices. Organizational economics provides a framework for exploring the firm's decision process. However, several theories exist in this discipline, operating in fundamentally different ways. This paper examines the two prevalent organizational theories, Transaction Cost Economics and Agency Theory, through a study of the food processing industry. This sector is thoroughly analyzed in order to make predictions from each theory regarding the aspects of capital structure and …

I approached that topic during my internship at SamTrans'/Callra in" where I had to prepare a report on connectivity that included the three counties where …

The Value Of The Arts, History And Culture In Downtown Revitalization: (Moving From Theory To Practice), Joy Neas Jan 2004

The Value Of The Arts, History And Culture In Downtown Revitalization: (Moving From Theory To Practice), Joy Neas

Master's Projects

The purpose of this planning report is to present problems threatening downtowns and explore a variety of solutions for restoring the downtown core. A downtown is the heart of the city. If it is not operating well the rest of the city is affected. I have a stake in this planning report since I am an artist passionate about historic preservation and appreciative of ethnic diversity. These elements are crucial for downtown success. When they are coupled with good business and planning strategies downtowns cannot help but come back.

To do this subject justice would require volumes. This planning report …

Considering Physical Inactivity In Relation To Obesity, Janet C. Struber Jan 2004

Considering Physical Inactivity In Relation To Obesity, Janet C. Struber

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Physical inactivity and obesity contribute enormously to the current burden of disease in Australia, as in all Western Countries. Although diet and exercise have been linked to health since antiquity, the connection has recently experienced a revival of interest. There is mounting evidence that the current prevalence of obesity is more closely related to decreases in energy expenditure than to the traditionally accepted imbalance between consumption and expenditure, and that physical activity is therefore crucial in maintaining weight loss. With overweight[1] and obesity[2] now the norm in Australia, physical inactivity is a major issue within and beyond the health sector, …
